MELBOURNE GUITAR FESTIVAL - september 21 23 2018
WELCOME!
It is our pleasure to welcome you to the fourth Melbourne Guitar Festival. Each year the
festival continues to grow and expand the audience for the classical guitar in Melbourne
(and Australia!). This year we are proud to present more concerts than we have ever done in
the history of the festival. Many of the faces presenting concerts will also be familiar to our
audiences, with our largest contingent of Australian concert artists to date.

We are extremely grateful for the continuing support of the Melbourne Conservatorium
of Music (University of Melbourne) for kindly sponsoring this event and making available
the historic Melba Hall to our audiences. Their support reaffirms their commitment to
maintaining a classical guitar department of world calibre.

This festival is the major event on the Melbourne Guitar Foundation’s annual calendar.
We hope this is an opportunity for guitarists, students and general music lovers to come
together and share a memorable weekend of celebrating everything the classical guitar has
    to offer.

Amongst these events, we cordially invite you to the display room in Tallis Wing where you
can find a wide selection of fine guitars and products on display from Doriean Guitars, Hans
Music Spot Croydon, Paytons (Admira, Hannabach), Yamaha Music, Dynamic
Music (Katoh), Dan Kellaway, Cary Pedicini, David Chin, Derek Pendavingh, Jayson Elazzi,
Kim Lissarrague, Sean Langelier, Shane Briggs and Andrew Duganzich.

Thank you for your support and we hope you have a wonderful MGF2018!

    Michael MacManus and Evan Hopkins,

BIOGRAPHY

“Like Siamese Twins in ensemble playing...”
Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany

The Gothenburg Combo (David Hansson and Thomas Hansy) is a notoriously boundary pushing guitar duo
that has been hailed internationally since the start in 1999 for their unique live performances, their original
compositions and a suite of seminal recordings.

“Tenderness and delicacy, sensitivity and perfection. But also playfulness and exuberance, virtuosity
and sheer joy... The Gothenburg Combo plays classical music with pop appeal, exudes an irresistible
life-affirming sense of humor and belong with these qualities to the leading guitar duos of the world.” -
Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, Germany

In 2004 The Gothenburg Combo won the first prize and the audiences’s prize in ”13eme Concours
Internationale de Guitare en Duo” in Montelimar, France. Since then they have toured extensively in Asia,
North America, South America and Europe (in 2018 also in Australia and New Zealand).

A selection of their critically acclaimed albums: ”Seascapes” (a concept album on Jules Verne’s ”20 000
Leagues Under the Sea”) ”Guitarscapes”, (including a unique version of ”In C” by Terry Riley), ”Sketches
of the World” (including the suite ”The Seven Continents”), ”Soundscapes” (a tribute to Steve Reich) and
”Hausmusik” (with instruments from the great luthier Hermann Hausers collection).

Last season they produced “The history of Swedish music” at the American Swedish Institute in
Minneapolis, USA, wrote a new opera together with the composer Malin Hülphers and toured together with
the ”father of minimal music”: the American legend Terry Riley.

BIOGRAPHY

Classical guitarist Harold Gretton seeks to bring a diverse mix of masterpieces to life with an interpretive
approach founded as much on raw passion and imagination as on thorough research. Not only interested in
pioneering new repertoire, he is equally at home rediscovering older classics. His unique vision is enriched
by historical information in all of the virtuoso works he performs. Harold Gretton began playing guitar at
the age of 7. He studied at the ANU before completing a course specialising in guitar duo performance in
Strasbourg together with Véronique van Duurling. The two of them formed the Duo Amythis.

He has won numerous international competitions, both as a soloist and in various chamber music
combinations. He has been invited to perform concerts all over Europe, as well as in the USA, Mexico,
Vietnam, and all over Australia. He has performed with orchestras in Australia and Europe, and gave the
world première of Westlake’s concerto Shadow Dances under the composer’s baton.

He has recorded three albums, the first as a soloist, the second and all-Australian program with quartet
Guitar Trek, and the third with the Duo Amythis, including a world-première recording.
