Moments of Life made possible by Hospice
and a little dog…
By Janice Valentino as told by Marilyn Serino
It had been about six weeks that my brother Michael had been living
at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, where I too had been staying
for about three weeks.
It was mid-February when Mike began talk to me about a dog. I asked
if he was talking about his daughter’s dog, Delilah. He replied No. I
asked if he was referring to my own dog, Piper. Again, Mike told me No.
Mike mentioned the dog a few more times until he finally feel asleep
that afternoon. I had no idea what dog he was talking about and soon
forgot about it.
Later that day, I overheard staff members talking about a little dog
that was sleeping under the bushes on the grounds of the residence.
Apparently, this little dog was either lost or abandoned and had been
seeking refuge from the cold on the property. Being the dog lover
that I am, I rescued the little visitor who was badly in need of some
TLC, brought her home to be bathed, fed and took her to our vet to be
checked out. I was thrilled when she received a clean bill of health.
When I returned to Kaplan to be with my brother Mike, I was grateful
to be able to bring along my new little friend. When I walked into Mike’s
room, his first response was “Oh wow, Crash is here”. Crash had been
our brother Gary’s little dog. Three years before, Gary had also been at
Kaplan. Shortly after Gary passed away, so did Crash. Mike was right,
this little dog did resemble Crash.
I took this as a sign that Mike and I were not alone and our brother
Gary, and Crash were watching out for us. This little dog, who we
named “Mikey” soon found her way on Mike’s bed and nestled up to
him as if she knew it was where she always belonged.
I believe this little dog was meant to become a part of our family. I am
grateful for her and the joy she brought my brother Mike at the end of
his life. The memories of the wonderful moments that were shared
at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence with my brother Mike and
“Mikey” will always be treasured.
                                                                              Kaplan Family Hospice Residence

With a little help from our friends…
As a non-profit 501C3, Hospice of Orange and
Sullivan Counties, Inc. is very appreciative of those
who donate to our organization. Whether we receive
donations through memorials, hospice events,
fundraisers, estates, on line or through our Facebook
page, we are so grateful to all whom through their
generosity, allow us to continue our mission to provide
patients and families with compassionate physical,
emotional and spiritual end of life care and offer
bereavement support for both adults and children in
our communities.
Joanne Stalter and daughter Jennifer Neos were
so grateful for the hospice care husband and father
Kevin Stalter received last summer, they wanted to do
something special in Kevin’s Memory and to Honor
Hospice. In June they held a yard sale in Napanoch, In Loving Memory of
NY and raised $1,100 to benefit Hospice. Joanne and
Jennifer said that the project helped them with their Kevin Stalter
grief and gave them joy to help ensure others receive
the amazing care for their loved ones as they received August 12, 2017
for Kevin.

Ride on “Shiney”… Ride On…

Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc. is grateful to the Friends of Thomas “Shiney” Van Horn, who not
only continue to honor the memory of their beloved Thomas, but also continue to support Hospice Care.

On March 24, 2018 the 18th Annual “Shiney” Van Horn Run brought in $6,680 in donations made in Loving
Memory of Tommy “Shiney” Van Horn. To date this dedicated family and friends have donated over $35,000
to Hospice on behalf of this annual event.
Tommy was a Harley man and loved to ride his motorcycle with his friends. We thank all friends and family
who continue to ride, keeping his memory alive. The RIDE will continue on March 23, 2019 at Dad’s Change
of Pace Port Jervis, New York!

Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc.
is in its 30th year of bringing compassionate
physical emotional and spiritual end of life
care with comfort, dignity and respect. But
many times we are asked from our community
  members…

When should I call Hospice?
Hundreds of times each year, patients and families tell us: “We wish we called hospice sooner.”
Patients and families can benefit most from hospice care when they seek support earlier rather
than in a crisis.

                                      Crafting Your Legacy
Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties provides physical, emotional,
and spiritual care for patients suffering from life-limiting diseases, as
well as bereavement support programs for their families. Joining our
Legacy Program is a way to support hospice while providing financial
benefits to you and your family. No matter the size, your gift can help
support programs today and for many years to come. Gifts can be as
simple as including a bequest provision in your will or naming Hospice
of Orange and Sullivan Counties as a beneficiary of your retirement plan
or life insurance policy. To learn more, please contact Janice Valentino at
