WHY BLACK WOMEN NEED SPECIALIZED PROGRAMMING Women that have social identities that are different from the dominant workplace expectation— that is, women who are not white, straight, are less than 40, and childless—encounter a myriad of obstacles to be successful at work. Being forced to conform to cultural norms that may be at odds with their social identities, encountering biases based upon their ethnicity and skin tone, and maintaining their authenticity are just a few of the challenges. Leaders are stereotypically seen as agentic: confident, competent, decisive, forceful, and independent. Men are stereotypically seen in precisely the same ways. Consequently, men are regarded as natural leaders, but women overcome serious challenges to be seen as competent, confident leaders. Women of color pursuing careers in corporate workplaces are continually walking a tightrope between “fitting in” and feeling authentic. The pressure that women of color feel to conform to this expectation is loaded on top of racial bias. As a result, they are more likely to be treated unfairly in promotions and training, to be discriminated against in advancement opportunities, and to experience a far greater sense of frustration and disengagement. In today’s rapidly changing business climate, organizations must be thoughtful, sensitive, and intentional its talent development and retention. Hear a NAAWLI graduate explain the importance of this unique experience. OVERVIEW The National African-American Women’s Leadership Institute, NAAWLI, is the premier leadership and professional development program for black women. NAAWLI was founded in 2000 by Dr. Gloria Scott, former president of Bennett College, and Dr. Zulma Barrios, Vice President at the Gallup Leadership Institute in Lincoln, Nebraska. The founders developed a highly focused curriculum to expose participants to the critical issues that affect black women in corporate through lectures, discussion groups, simulations, and other leadership development activities. With over 20 years of successful programming and almost 300 graduates, we continue to partner with organizations that support the professional and personal growth of black women. Our programing is specially designed to address intellectual, psychological, and purpose-driven responsibilities in senior-level leadership. The integrated curriculum is strategically designed to address mid-level professionals in corporations, small businesses, non-profits, and entrepreneurs.
