This week’s devastating cuts from the council budget is extremely bad
news for the sector and the recipients of our services.
                                                                                         ADVERTISING
Like many others ACVO has had a 40% cut to the funding directly related
to the work it does in community planning, localities and children’s services. This will mean it will be harder to ensure the
voices of the sector are heard in these forums. However, given the cuts this week it appears that ACC is not at all committed
to listening to the voices of those in need or indeed really dedicated to the early intervention and support for the city’s
most vulnerable.

Whilst the council’s own staff is preserved from redundancy, the 3rd sector will now be issuing notification to its staff about
compulsory redundancies.

International Mother Language Day
2019
Aberdeen Multicultural Centre successfully hosted
an event to celebrate International Mother Language
Day 2019 on 24th February 2019 at the Aberdeen Arts
Centre.

Similar to previous years, AMC organized an art
competition for kids. The kids were divided into two
groups aged 5-8 years and 9 to 13 years of age. The
themes of the Art competition were ‘a landscape of
your imagination’ and ‘nature in your country’. Three
winners for each category were awarded a prize and
a certificate. The art competition provided kids with
the opportunity to show their skills and helped them to
develop confidence in their future activities.

The programme commenced with an introduction to International Mother Language Day by Azad, a member of Aberdeen
Multicultural Community, highlighting the importance of IMLD and its histroty. Speeches followed from The Lord Provost
of Aberdeen, Councilor Barney Crockett and The Rt. Honorable MSP Lewis Macdonald, who highlighted the importance of
such events for the community and the city, and the importance of celebrating cultural diversity. The programme was also
attended by Aberdeen Councillors and the Deputy Provost of Aberdeenshire.

The main cultural programme commenced at 13:30 with a performance of the popular IMLD theme song, Amar Vai Er Rokte
Rangano, were sang by Bornomala Aberdeen (Bengali Language School) children. Over 140 talented individual performers
from different parts of the world took part in the programme, with 20 different languages represented. Performers included
Kala Sangam, Desi Scot, The Melting Pot Collective, Nepalese Community, Gaelic Choir, Doric Poetry, African Poetry and
Dance, North African music, Polish Rap, the Red Pheonix dance Co. Chinese dance group, the Desi Bravehearts from
Glasgow, and the SC&T Youth Ceilidh Ensemble.

Around 400 attendees enjoyed a vibrant and colourful day at this unique cultural event celebrating the importance of mother
languages, cultural diversity and linguistic practices in order to preserve and protect the mother tongue and bring solidarity
among diverse cultures which would otherwise disappear in the future to come. AMC would like to extend their sincere
gratitude to invited guest speakers, staff, volunteers, performers, food suppliers and audiences.

Record Leap for Aberdeen Charity
A cancer support charity is calling on adrenaline lovers as it
launches Scotland’s most terrifying fundraising event.

CLAN Cancer Support has announced this year’s Brave the Bounce
bungee jump which will feature Scotland’s first 300 ft drop – twice
as deep as last year’s popular event. Courageous participants will
be rewarded with a birds-eye view of Aberdeen, as they prepare
to leap off a platform and drop an eye-watering 300 feet to the
ground. A drone view of the height of the drop has been filmed by
a drone https://youtu.be/gx1keeiduPM.

The CLAN Brave the Bounce bungee jump will take place on Saturday 29th June 2019, from 9am – 7pm, at Aberdeen Beach
Boulevard.

People from 14 – 114 are invited to experience the closest thing to human flight, to raise money for CLAN, which provides
cancer support to people across the north-east who are affected by cancer.

Online registration for the Brave the Bounce 2019 is now open at www.clanhouse.org. There is a £40 registration fee, and
participants are asked to set themselves a £80 sponsorship target.

Ruth McIntosh, CLAN fundraising co-ordinator, said: “We are excited to bring Scotland’s highest bungee to Aberdeen in June.
Last year’s event was extremely popular, and many of those who jumped the 160ft drop have already signed up to challenge
themselves to 300ft.

“We are always overwhelmed by the support CLAN receives from businesses and individuals across Aberdeen city and shire,
and we are confident this new venture will excite daredevils from across the region. It is the first time such an exhilarating
event has taken place in Aberdeen, and the views from the jumping platform at the top, looking out to the North Sea and
city will be unmissable.”

CLAN Cancer Support is an independent charity which provides comfort, support and information, free of charge, for
anyone, of any age, affected by any type of cancer. CLAN aims to support people to reduce anxiety, stress and to increase
their ability to cope with the effects of a serious illness.

To book your slot on Scotland’s biggest bungee, and for more information about CLAN Cancer Support, please visit: www.

Climate Week North East
Fancy a tour of a Community Wind Farm or Hydro, learn
some stress busting techniques, forage, listen to amazing
talks, learn more about gardening, go walking in company,
visit a zero waste café or simply learn more about living
sustainably?

Climate Week North East is a week full of fun, inspiring
and interesting events in Aberdeen and the Shire, running
between 15th- 24th March 2019, designed to raise awareness
of climate change and show what we can all do to make a
difference and reduce our carbon footprint in a fun way. Be
inspired and learn what small (and big) steps you can take
in the fight against climate change starting with the free
Green Family Fun Day in Hazlehead Park on Saturday 16th
March, followed by Seedy Sunday at Aden Country Park,
the Environmental Earth Fair at Balmedie Leisure Centre on
23rd March and culminating with Earth Day at Aberdeen
Science Centre on Sunday 24th March. From tours of
community renewable projects, cooking demonstrations to
guided ranger walks and bike rides, films, plays, and talks,
Climate Week North East is designed to showcase the inspiring action happening here in the North East and demonstrate
what each of us can do to make a real positive difference in our own lives and the lives of others.

As Alison Stuart, Aberdeen Climate Action, says “There is only 12 years left to really change our behaviours and reduce
carbon emissions. While much more needs to be done at a governmental and macro-economic level, I am constantly
amazed at the passion and power shown at the community, SME and individual level here in the north east. There are so
many amazing sustainability projects and Climate Week is a fantastic opportunity to get to know more about them and be
inspired to change your life for the better.

All of us can do something to help reduce climate change. It is easy to take small steps that all build into making a big
difference (and save us money). These steps can be as small as changing your home power supply to renewable, growing
your own veg and eating less meat, reusing and recycling, using your car less and getting a hybrid or electric car to starting
up your own community project or company with the reduction of carbon emissions as an outcome. There are lots we all
can do.”

Why don’t you challenge your friends, family and colleagues to a friendly competition to see how much carbon emission
you can save during March? You can gain inspiration from our websites: www.aberdeenclimateaction.org and www.
sustainableaberdeen.com and come along to our free monthly Climate Café, the first Tuesday of each month, in the Belmont
Filmhouse Café Bar between 7-9pm. For full details check out Aberdeen Climate Action @facebook.

Put a note in your diary for CWNE and come along to the fun and inspiring events. The full programme of events will be
uploaded at https://www.climateweekaberdeen.org/programme.html or found on CWNE@facebook.

Women in Art find a Way Through
Aberdeen City and Shire
Aberdeen Arts Centre saw a wild night out on 22nd
February for lovers of song, poetry, painting and drama
as the Spotlight was turned by Mindblox coaching onto
four local women artists who have lived and survived to
tell their tales - singer Cameron Jay, Doric poet Jo Gilbert,
writer Kayrin Macmillan and ACVO’s own Alison Chandler
showing new and previously unexhibited work.

The uplifting evening took the form of a “Loose
Women” style interview followed by performance with
accompanying, shopping opportunity and luxuury raffle. Alison moves on to exhibit new work at Johnshaven Heritage Hub
from Saturday 9th March to April 7th 1.00-4.00. Her artistic, physical and spiritual journey from Cancer to pilgrimage on the

What Matters to Local Communities and Older People
in Scotland
The ALLIANCE has published a new report highlighting the findings of engagement
activity around Brexit.

The ALLIANCE’s new report, exploring the impact Brexit will have on health and social
care, is now available to read below.

Brexit is fast approaching with Scotland set to leave the European Union on the 29th
March, as matters currently stand. In advance of this proposed date, the ALLIANCE
has spent the last year asking communities across Scotland an important question:
‘What Matters to You?’ From Campbeltown to Aberdeen, local communities have told
us that they have real concerns about Brexit’s potential impact on health and social
care, rights and regulation, finance and funding, identity and young people.

Beyond these discussion points, many common themes emerged, including uncertainty,
trust, transparency and accessibility of information.

Respondents were not only worried about their own wellbeing. They stressed the importance of security for them, for
their families and for their children. This illustrates the cross-generational impact of Brexit, with any impact on younger
generations affecting the wellbeing of older people in Scotland and vice versa. In this sense, the effects of Brexit will be
shared across communities and across generations.

ALLIANCE Director Irene Oldfather commented on the findings of the newly published report “The ALLIANCE took this
discussion to the heart of local communities where we heard about the worries people, and in particular older people, have
about the impact of Brexit on their way of life, their medicines and their pension security. For younger people, issues around
freedom of movement, education and learning prevailed.

“The divisive effect that Brexit has had was particularly evident in the most recent sessions where older people resented
having been stereotyped as supporters of Brexit, noting a rise in ageism in Scotland.”

‘Right to Rent’ Scheme Causes Landlords to Discriminate, Rules High Court
The government’s ‘hostile environment’ policy took a hit in a High Court judgement on Friday. Spencer J declared the “right
to rent” scheme, laid out in sections 20-37 of the Immigration Act 2014, incompatible with the European Convention on

What Does Primary Care Look Like for the
Next Generation?
Primary Care is generally the first point of contact with the NHS
(except for Accident and Emergency) for most people in Scotland
when they need to access healthcare. This includes contact with
many community based services and healthcare professionals
as well as also a number of non-clinical roles such as practice
receptionists and managers and community links workers.

In 2015, the Scottish Government produced the National Clinical
Strategy for Scotland. It was developed to look at how Healthcare needs to adapt to keep up with a growing and evolving
population, huge changes in technology and the integration of Health and Social Care services across the country in the
long term.

The Scottish Government’s vision for the future of primary care services is for multi-disciplinary teams, made up of a variety
of health professionals working together to support people in their community and give GPs more time to spend with
patients in specific need of their expertise.

Primary Care Transformation is about modernising primary care to deliver a safe, effective and person-centred healthcare
service. It focuses on multidisciplinary team working to reduce pressures on services. It also aims to ensure better outcomes
for patients with access to the right professional, at the right time, as near to home as possible.

Tell the Scottish Government what you think of current services and how they can be improved and sustained in the future
by filling in this survey: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/parliamentscotprimary-nhs-care-survey/

The deadline is 30 April 2019. If you need the survey in another format, please contact David Cullum, Clerk, Health and
Sport Committee via telephone (0131 348 5210) or email HealthandSport@parliament.scot

Scottish Drugs Forum E-learning
Scottish Drugs Forum is pleased to announce the
launch of a new e-learning resource dedicated to
raising basic knowledge and awareness of illicit drugs
that are commonly used in Scotland.

The free-to-access, one-hour ‘Drug Awareness’
introductory course can be completed in one sitting,
or alternatively be completed in separate sittings to provide a fully flexible learning experience.

Alongside face-to-face training, SDF has been supporting the development of e-learning courses on a variety of topics as it
is recognised as an effective tool for individuals who may experience constraints on available time and budget.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
• Identify a range of reasons why people use drugs
• Describe patterns of drug use
• Recall commonly used drugs in Scotland
• Understand and explain harm reduction techniques

Although the course has been designed to meet the needs of people who may come into contact with people who use drugs,
various other audiences will benefit from the e-learning, including; GPs, nurses, teachers, police, housing workers, social
workers, mental health workers and the general public.

New Research Reveals the Hardships of those Begging
Hard-hitting new research into begging in Edinburgh has been published by the Edinburgh Community Safety Partnership
and Shelter Scotland.

Researchers commissioned jointly by Shelter and the Partnership found evidence of at least 420 people begging on the
streets of the capital over the two years to October 2018. It found that the lives of those begging were characterised by
deep, often lifelong poverty, poor mental and physical health, addiction and the constant threat of abuse.

It’s the first detailed piece of research into begging in any UK city for 20 years and is described as a first step in finding ways
to support people out of begging in Edinburgh.

The research found that 89% of people begging were Edinburgh and UK nationals, with 73% having a local connection of
accommodation or last settled address being in Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh Community Safety Partnership includes representatives of public agencies such as NHS Lothian and Police
Scotland as well Essential Edinburgh which represents city centre businesses. The Partnership has agreed that a united effort
will be required to help people move on from begging.

Councillor Amy McNeese-Mechan, Chair of the Edinburgh Community Safety Partnership said “Street begging is a hugely
complex issue and if we’re going to address it effectively we have to improve our understanding of it. That’s why we
commissioned this important and long overdue research in partnership with Shelter Scotland – the most detailed research
done on this issue in the UK for two decades. This is the first step in producing a long-term strategy to fully understand and
respond to the complexities of street begging. We’ve set up a working group to analyse the findings and develop an action
plan.”

The Allen Lane Foundation - Social Cohesion Programme
The Foundation is particularly concerned about divisions in communities that occurred around the 2016 Referendum and
subsequently.

The Social Cohesion programme will look to support grassroots organisations at a very local level (housing estate or
distinct community) where there are issues which identify marginalised groups of people (especially those from within the
Foundation’s priorities, but not exclusively) who are excluded. It will fund work which breaks down barriers and tensions in
the local community thereby reducing feelings of division and “them and us”.

Applications will be particularly encouraged from areas of high deprivation but not exclusively.

More Information

Corra Foundation - Henry Duncan Awards
The Henry Duncan Awards supports grassroots charities in Scotland with an income of less than £500,000 which are
delivering programmes or services clearly focused on improving the quality of life for people who are disadvantaged.

There is particular interest in applications which are focused on supporting: vulnerable children and young people, isolated
older people, carers, families in poverty and people affected by disability or mental health issues.

The Corra Foundation was previously called The Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland.

More Information

Comic Relief/Paul Hamlyn Foundation - Tech for Good Programme
The Tech for Good programme was developed in response to the emerging need for charities in the UK to use technology to
explore different approaches to delivering better services. It aims to provide the opportunity for not-for-profit organisations,
who already have some technological capacity, to take their digital innovation projects forward.

Projects should address one of our four core issue areas: Children Survive and Thrive, Global Mental Health Matters,
Fighting for Gender Justice, or A Safe Place to Be.

They will also welcome applications addressing challenges related to disability and inclusion outside of the themes specified
above. A wide range of digital interventions will be considered.

Have you considered having a qualified Mental Health First Aid trained
person within the workplace or just as an individual to help people in crisis?
We all understand the importance of first aid, but more than often mental health issues are over
looked because of stigma or awkwardness attached to the subject. For this reason, there is often a
fear about speaking about such experiences.

Our Mental Health First Aid program is ideal for those who are looking to increase their awareness
and understanding around mental health and build their confidence to offer valuable first aid to
people suffering from mental distress in the workplace and in the community.

Both the UK and Scottish Government have recognised the importance of having Mental and
Physical First Aid on an equal foot and were unanimous in the decision to eventually make it
mandatory in the workplace.

Each year one person will take an average of 20 days off work due to mental health problems as
opposed to 7.2 working days off for a physical injury.

After attending the 12 hour course, candidates will be issued with an official NHS Health Scotland
Mental Health First Aid Certificate (adults) and will be able to:

• Lead awareness and understanding of how to support and improve mental health in the workplace
  and community.
• Identify the key signs of mental ill health and know how to address these.
• Help others who might be experiencing mental ill health and aid their recovery.
• Communicate the importance of reducing stigma and discrimination.
• Provide insight and targeted support to managers and colleagues.

Our trainers have over 20 years experience working in Mental Health, NHS Mentally Healthy
Working Lives and Stress Management and more recently become trainers for NHS Scottish Mental
Health First Aid.
