All Souls is a religious community:
In the experience of worship, we gather to contemplate the
mystery of God, interpret the wisdom of religion, and explore the
insights of science. Our purpose is to awaken our sense of the
sacred and renew our resolve to transform ourselves andour
world.

As human beings, we all emerge from the same Source and
share the same Destiny. As a community of faith, we makeshared
commitments and offer mutual support. As individuals, we each
bear responsibility for our own beliefs and actions.

We practice a discipline of gratitude, by which we acknowledge
our utter dependence on the people and world around us, and
we practice an ethic of gratitude, by which we accept our
obligation to nurture others and the world in return.

RESPONSIVE READING Every Night and Every Morn
                                             by William Blake

Every night and every morn
some to misery are born;

Every morn and every night
Some are born to sweet delight.

Joy and woe are woven fine,
clothing for the soul divine:

Under every grief and pine
runs a joy with silken twine.
It is right it should be so:
we were made for joy and woe;

And when this we rightly know,
safely through the world we go.

CHORAL HYMN 289 Creative Love, Our Thanks We Give
Creative love, our thanks we give
that this, our world, is incomplete,
that struggle greets our will to live,
that work awaits our hands and feet;

That we are not yet fully wise,
that we are in the making still —
as friends who share one enterprise
and strive to blend with nature’s will.

What though the future long delay,
and still with faults we daily cope?
It gives us that for which to pray,
a field for toil and faith and hope.

Since what we choose is what we are,
and what we love we yet shall be,
the goal may ever shine afar —
the will to reach it makes us free.

PRAYER

CHORAL HYMN 333 Alone She Cuts and Binds the Grain

Alone she cuts and binds the grain,
and sings a melancholy strain:
O listen! for the vale profound
is overflowing with the sound.

Will no one tell me what she sings?
Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow
for old, unhappy far-off things,
and for the battles long ago.

Or is it some more humble lay,
familiar matter of today?
Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain,
that once has been, may be again?

I listened, motionless and still,
and, as I mounted up the hill,
the music in my heart I bore
long after it was heard no more.
OFFERTORY                                                 Adiemus
                                               Karl Jenkins (1944-)

SERMON                                              Can’t Complain

CHORAL HYMN 334 When Shall We Learn

When shall we learn, what should be clear as day,
we cannot choose what we are free to love?
We are created with and from the world
to suffer with and by it day by day.

For through our lively traffic all the day,
in my own person I am forced to know
how much must be forgotten out of love,
how much must be forgiven, even love.

Or else we make a scarecrow of the day,
loose ends and jumble of our common world;
or else our changing flesh can never know
there must be sorrow if there can be love.
