Every second year, Altrusa International holds a convention, it’s like a District Conference
but on a larger scale. The four-day program includes business meetings, a variety of
workshops, keynote speakers, service projects, recognition through awards, and election
of international leadership. Along with opportunities to connect and socialise with
Altrusans from across the world.
This year the Altrusa International Conference was held at the Grand Sierra Resort and
Casino, Reno, Nevada from July 17 to 20 2019. Our club president Katrina attended
along with other members from various clubs throughout New Zealand.
Katrina was a busy bee as she attended the Young Professionals programme, Virtual
club and corporate club workshops and presented at a couple of workshops. Katrina’s
highlights from conference included the workshop on Paper for Water which she
bought back to our August Meeting. Listening to Victoria Ransom an entrepreneur from
New Zealand who lives in the States. Victoria developed three companies including
Wildfire Interactive, a social marketing SaaS company, until she sold it to Google in
2012. As well as the Dessert Dash Fundraiser raised $16 thousand US dollars for Days
for Girls. The next Altrusa International Convention is July 21 – 24, 2021 in Quebec,
Canada.

August has been all about literacy! Our club donated over 200 books into our local community. Our
club members have been busy dropping off books to local primary and intermediate schools in the
Ohariu area. Emily, Janine and Katrina visited Arohata Prison and met with the prison librarians to
hand over the books we donated to their book club. They got to check out the library and spent time
talking to the librarians and two of the inmates who work in the library.
A special thanks to the following club members: Debbie, who coordinated with the prison librarians
over the book selections, ordering and purchasing the books and organising our visit and the
stickers. Katrina, who liaised with Linden Primary School over the book choices and purchasing of
the books and Merridy, for choosing the non- fiction books that represented Women in technology.
This project will empower women and children to develop new skills, extend their knowledge, and
understand the opportunities that are created
