NORTH WELLINGTON SENIORNET North Wellington SeniorNet, c/o Johnsonville Community Centre, 3 Frankmoore Avenue, Johnsonville, Wellington 6037 Email: northwellingtonseniornet@gmail.com Website: http://www.northwellingtonseniornet.org.nz/ June 2021 Greetings to all SeniorNet Members, Where’s a crippling ransomware attack when you really need one? Headline news … the entire computer system of the Waikato DHB crashed as a result of a cyber attack. As I write this they are still rebuilding the system from the routine daily back ups which they do. Critics are questioning the quality of the security measures which were in place given they were able to be penetrated by this ransomware attack, and there is concern about the fate of private health records. One positive is that the system can be rebuilt from the daily back ups with minimal loss of information. What would happen if your device/s were attacked? Do you have adequate security AND back up systems? Some of you said on your Membership Renewal Form that ‘Back ups’ and ‘Security’ were learning sessions you wanted to take. Don’t delay until it’s too late. Book a Learning Session now. Last month, one of our committee members attended the annual SeniorNet AGM/Symposium. Among the topics which were discussed was the trial of SeniorHangouts. Will this be the way we learn about various aspects of technology in the future? There are many positives including the convenience of having tuition in your own home. Further, in a well conducted session you can clearly see the screen of the tutor’s device and therefore what they are demonstrating. This is particularly important with mobile devices such as cellphones which have such a small screen. Learn more about SeniorHangouts on the next page. A report at the SeniorNet AGM presented information on the various learning sessions which were held in 2020 by Learning Centres throughout New Zealand. What were the most popular? Overwhelmingly, the most popular learning sessions were on ‘Smartphones’. Given that smartphones are now used by so many people for so many different activities that isn’t surprising. The second was on computer maintenance which includes ‘Backing up data’ and ‘File and Folders’. Are you making the most of your smartphone? Have you taken learning sessions so that you can do more than the basics such as text, make phone calls and take photos? If not contact me now. ID Cards Given you have all paid your subscriptions you are entitled to an ID Card. You can use this card to get a discount when you purchase a wide range of products from Noel Leeming. Around 40 members have not collected their ID card. Have you collected yours? I have the ID Cards at our Open Sessions so please come along and collect your card if you don’t have one so that you will have your card before you purchase new products from Noel Leeming.
