Greetings to all SeniorNet Members, Where’s a crippling
                                                                                   ransomware attack when

Headline news … the entire computer system of the Waikato DHB crashed as a
result of a cyber attack. As I write this they are still rebuilding the system from the
routine daily back ups which they do. Critics are questioning the quality of the
security measures which were in place given they were able to be penetrated by
this ransomware attack, and there is concern about the fate of private health
records. One positive is that the system can be rebuilt from the daily back ups
with minimal loss of information. What would happen if your device/s were
attacked? Do you have adequate security AND back up systems? Some of you
said on your Membership Renewal Form that ‘Back ups’ and ‘Security’ were learning sessions you wanted to take.
Don’t delay until it’s too late. Book a Learning Session now.

Last month, one of our committee members attended the annual SeniorNet AGM/Symposium. Among the topics
which were discussed was the trial of SeniorHangouts. Will this be the way we learn about various aspects of
technology in the future? There are many positives including the convenience of having tuition in your own home.
Further, in a well conducted session you can clearly see the screen of the tutor’s device and therefore what they
are demonstrating. This is particularly important with mobile devices such as cellphones which have such a small
screen. Learn more about SeniorHangouts on the next page.

Programme for June
Our Open Session is on Wednesday, 16 June, 1-3pm in the Trust Room,
Johnsonville Community Centre. The topic will be ‘Protecting Personal
Information’. How much personal information are you sharing online? How
are you keeping it secure? Join us to learn how we can protect our personal
information so that we are not subject to a range of cyber crimes such as
identity theft.
• Interest Group Zoom sessions for both Android and Apple devices will
be held as usual on the second and fourth Tuesday mornings, starting at
10am. All Zoom sessions are free.
       • The first Zoom session will be on Tuesday 8 June.
       • The second Zoom session will be on Tuesday 22 June
If you need help with using Zoom, both Peter on 027 457 4572, and John on 021 457 231 can help you. Please
contact them several days before the Zoom session so they can help you learn how to download and use Zoom.
• Our other two Interest Group sessions will be held on Wednesday, 23 June at the Johnsonville Community
Centre. There is a door charge of $2 for attendees who must be members of our Learning Centre.
      • The Family History Group will meet at 10 - 12 noon in Room OneA.
      • The Digital Photography Interest Group will meet at 1 - 3 pm in the Trust Room.
• On Demand face-to-face learning sessions will continue for all our learning sessions topics. A report at the
SeniorNet AGM presented information on the various learning sessions which were held in 2020 by Learning
Centres throughout New Zealand. What were the most popular? Overwhelmingly, the most popular learning
sessions were on ‘Smartphones’. Given that smartphones are now used by so many people for so many different
activities that isn’t surprising. The second was on computer maintenance which includes ‘Backing up data’ and
‘File and Folders’. Are you making the most of your smartphone? Have you taken learning sessions so that you
can do more than the basics such as text, make phone calls and take photos? If not contact me now.

Tech Tip Zoom meetings:
                  • Check your camera and sound before joining a meeting
                  • Keep your microphone on mute unless you are speaking
                  • Use a virtual background if you’re concerned about others seeing your room
                  • Don’t worry about what you look like - it’s a meeting not a beauty contest!

SeniorHangouts

What are they?
SeniorHangouts is an initiative by the Federation of New Zealand SeniorNet Societies in
conjunction with Google Classroom, offering a new way to learn online. It has the
potential to offer seven-days-a-week online tuition, consisting of up to six half-hour
presentations per day. A trial was begun at the time of the Covid lockdown and has
extended until the end of May this year.
To participate in the trial, participants needed to have a valid Gmail account. This was needed to access resources
on Google Drive which were shared with participants. They also needed to have Zoom installed and operational on
their computer as SeniorHangouts was delivered on the Zoom platform. A stand-alone mobile and tablet application
for Android and iOS platforms is being developed, and is set to go live on 1st of June, 2021.

What happened?
A tutor, or Hangout "buddy", met up with registered participants on an advertised topic at

The trial SeniorHangouts covered a myriad of technology-related subjects. There have
