Tech Talk:
probiotic mode of action
* Editor’s Note: Technical Talk article was written by Dr. Karl Nestor, technical services manager of CHR. Hansen

You may have seen the commercials on television advertising probiotics for human consumption. Probiotics can be found
in everything from sports drinks, foods, to even baby formula. While the use of probiotics for animals has been around for
decades, in recent years, the use of probiotics is increasing. Recently interest in probiotic use in animal diets has increased in
response to negative public opinion and regulatory control
of antibiotic use in animal diets. Although probiotics are
not a replacement for antibiotics they can effectively aid
the host animal when their health is compromised due to
nutritional stress or pathogenic bacteria proliferation in the
digestive tract. After all, the majority of the immune system
function is found in the lower digestive tract.

Probiotics, as defined by the World Health Organization, are
“live micro-organisms, which when consumed in adequate
amounts, confer a health effect on the host.” Most probiotic
organisms are lactic acid producing bacteria. Examples
can include Lactobacillus animalis, Bacillus subtilis,
Enterococcus faecium, etc. Probiotics work to stabilize the
gastrointestinal tract and reduce the number of pathogenic
bacteria found within the gut. There are several modes of
action of a probiotic which are given in Figure 1.

As shown in Figure 1, probiotics can improve gastrointestinal Figure 1. Potential modes of action of probiotic bacteria.
stability through:
1. Competitive exclusion by competing for nutrients that would normally be used by pathogenic bacteria and by competitive
attachment to the intestinal lining taking up attachment sites that would normally be populated by the pathogenic organism.
2. Altering (lowering) the pH in the lower gut which is beneficial to probiotic bacterial growth but detrimental to pathogenic
    bacteria.
3. Colonization of beneficial probiotic bacteria to the detriment of pathogenic bacteria (i.e., germ warfare in the gastrointestinal
    tract).
4. Improve the barrier function of the intestines and produce mucus as added protection. In addition, tight junction between
the cells of the intestine is improved and can result in less “leaky gut” syndrome.
5. Reduce inflammation in the intestine caused by pathogenic bacteria which reduces the overall absorption capability of the
    lower gut.
6. Modulate the immune response of the animal.

The result of these processes is a reduction of pathogenic bacterial such as E. coli, clostridia, and salmonella. This results
in a healthy gastrointestinal tract which improves animal performance. A healthy lower gut increases the immune status of
the animal and reduces the energy output by the animal to fight off infections. The energy spared due to decreased immune
system energy requirements can, therefore, be used for other productive functions such as increased gain, reproduction, or
milk production.

Probiotic use should not be used as a treatment option for sick animals but as a daily supplement to help alleviate the challenges
that can occur on farming operations such as environmental issues, forage or ration changes, and exposure to environmental
pathogens. The number of probiotic products on the market has grown considerably and when choosing a probiotic make
sure to choose one that has research data supporting its use. Research with the Chr. Hansen probiotic line, BOVAMINE, has
shown numerous beneficial effects such as increased milk production, improved milk production efficiency, enhanced overall
herd health, increased total apparent digestibility of starch, protein, and fiber, improved growth rate, and enhanced health in
growing calves and heifers.

The bottom line is that probiotics can be an effective tool in your operation to improve the overall performance of your herd.
A sick cow is not a productive cow and probiotics can help animals fight off the daily challenges found on the dairy operation,
resulting in a more profitable herd.

Biosafety of Plasma Proteins
The biosafety of plasma products is extremely important to APC and to the swine industry. As a company, we
make continuous investments in the latest technologies – sometimes they are even exclusive to us – to ensure
we are providing the swine industry with a safe product 100% of the time. In fact, we closely follow and
mirror the same standards put forth by the World Health Organization for the safety of human blood plasma
products.
APC meets or exceeds the WHO standards for each critical step. Specifically, APC:
                  1. Collects only from healthy animals at federally inspected abattoirs, including the step
of pooling plasma for the effect of neutralizing antibodies
                  2. Conducts testing on every lot of plasma with PCR analysis with an accompanying
                     Certificate of Analysis
