OCTOBER 2020
Brings Two Full Moons
The first full Moon of fall—in this case, the Harvest Moon—will appear on Thursday, October 1. Later in the
month, on Saturday, October 31 (Halloween), the second full Moon appears.

Daylight Savings has arrived and we have just had our first face to face committee meeting in two
months, arriving in daylight. Summer is just around the corner! This will be different for everyone this
year I’m guessing.

CONVENORS NOTE
Another month has flown by and we finally can say we will be open again as from the meetings on Tuesday 6 th

October.10am and 7pm.
Spring is in the air, despite the cold winds, plants are up, and daylight saving is with us.
Unfortunately, as there has been a lack of volunteers to help with house opening, we will no longer be opening
the 1 Saturday of every month at least until after Christmas.
     st

Legacy and the DNA group are starting again with Legacy this month on 2 Saturday (10 ) and the DNA group
                                                                              nd th

in November. I hope to run the Legacy session via Skype again for those who prefer to attend remotely. A
separate email will be sent out about this.
Our speaker on Tuesday morning is Robyn Williams from NZSG. So come and learn more about what the
Society can offer you to help with research. Another group affiliated to the NZSG is the Genealogical
Computing Group and our evening speaker is going to tell us more about that. This group co-runs the popular
Family History Expo’s with Auckland Libraries amongst other things.
My thanks again to everyone who has helped out, while I have been recuperating and continue to do so.
I do hope to see some of you at the house over the coming weeks and remember to sign in and use the QR
code, hand sanitiser is provided, and we will social distance with seating.

Subject: NZSG Howick Branch meeting 10 October 2020

Hello everyone:

This is to invite you and your members to hear a very interesting speaker with a fascinating topic on Saturday, 10 October
at 1:30 pm. Our meetings are held in the St. Andrews Church Centre, corner Ridge Road and Vincent Street, Howick.

Mike Maran, New Zealand’s only certificate graphologist, will be talking about Forensic Handwriting & Document
Examination as well as Graphology. He spends his time examining handwriting, signatures and documents to try and
pinpoint who has written them and if they have been forged. He says some traits will immediately stand out when you see
a piece of writing including the way it slants and the size. He says handwriting can change with age, or be different for
emotional or medical reasons. Even so it can’t be completely disguised.

He has asked all attendees to bring a pen. Door entry: $5

We look forward to seeing you,
Regards,
Barbara Mansell
Speaker Convenor, Howick Branch, NZSG

While we are in Level 2, we are unable to hold in-person events, so we will be trying to Zoom (live-stream) as many of our events as
we can.

However, the HeritageTalk has been postponed till 21 October. Our website will be updated soon, but the event has already been
updated on our Facebook page.

Toilets for all! Auckland’s public toilet history with Samantha Waru
Wednesday 21 October 12pm-1pm Whare Wananga L2 Central City Library or live-streamed via Zoom

Public toilets sure do have stories to tell. Join Samantha Waru for a dive into the interesting, and sometimes indecorous, history of
Auckland’s public toilets from the 1860s to today.

Exploring something as mundane as the public toilet can tell us a lot about who was here and what their needs were. It is essentially a
story of access, women’s rights, urban development, public health and power. This talk will set the scene of 19th century Auckland
and flush out the stories of how some of our most recognisable loos came to be.

Samantha Waru is the Graduate Heritage at Auckland Libraries. Since February 2019 she has worked with multiple teams across the
heritage and research teams of Auckland Libraries as part of the Auckland Council Graduate Programme. Her research into public
toilets was completed during her rotation with the Auckland Council Archives team.

She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Auckland University in history and anthropology, a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Museums and
Cultural Heritage as well as a Master of Heritage Conservation. She has experience working with Heritage New Zealand and MOTAT
and has a passion for local history.

Email arc@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz to book (booking essential). Or register to join the event online via Zoom.
