Welcome everyone to Buckles & Bangles! We have been
looking forward to this virtual celebration. Our theme tonight
is “A Million Reasons,” and that theme is more real today than
it ever has been. We have a million reasons to support the
programs and services that UMOM provides. The pandemic
has impacted countless families who were already teetering
on the edge of homelessness. The need for shelter, services,
and affordable housing for families has never been greater.
With the help of all of you who have joined us tonight, we
can truly make a difference in the lives of those experiencing
homelessness. We are so proud to co-chair UMOM’s largest
fundraising event but could not have done it alone, especially
in these unprecedented times. We are incredibly grateful
for our wonderful committee.
Tonight, we also join in honoring someone who has a true heart
of gold. She has dedicated 18 years to UMOM and has not
only been an effective CEO; she has been a tireless champion
for ending homelessness. Her accomplishments for UMOM
and the homeless population cannot be overstated. Thank
you, Darlene, for not being afraid to push the boundaries,
to ask the difficult questions, and to stand up for one of
Arizona’s most marginalized populations. We are grateful
for your many years of service and commitment to ending
homelessness in Arizona.
Now it is up to us to give our support and make sure all of
the money raised tonight will go straight to restoring hope,
rebuilding lives, and ending homelessness.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to UMOM’s 11th Annual Buckles and Bangles
Virtual Gala. On behalf of the UMOM Board of Directors and Leadership Team,
I want to thank each of you for joining us tonight. We are excited and honored
to share some examples of our everyday work made possible by all of you.
Tonight, you will hear stories of courageous individuals who overcame various
struggles and trauma to begin their journey out of homelessness. You will see
how the impact of UMOM’s work, through your support, has built a stronger
community by empowering people to take action toward a new, better life.
As my retirement approaches, I reflect on my time at UMOM. For the past 18
years, it has been a privilege to serve my community and partner with supporters,
local businesses, and philanthropic leaders to provide programs and services for
families, single women, and youth experiencing homelessness. There has been
incredible dedication and progress over the years as we have worked together
to advance the mission of ending homelessness. From a $3M organization to
a $25M organization, together, we built the New Day Center family shelter
and continued expansion to serve more families each year. We opened the
first full-service emergency shelter in Phoenix for single women. We acquired
homeless youth programs. We also opened more than 500 affordable housing
units throughout the Valley, with more opening next year.
Soon, UMOM will start a new chapter. With the same commitment and
passion, the organization will continue to build on past successes while looking
toward the future with a focus on being responsive and adaptive in our new
environment, ensuring our mission continues to restore hope, rebuild lives, and
end homelessness. Please join me in welcoming our new CEO, Jackson Fonder.

through its partnership with UMOM to prevent and end homelessness

As one of the largest children’s hospitals in the country, Phoenix
Children’s Hospital (“PCH”) has delivered world-class care across
more than 75 pediatric specialties for more than 35 years.
PCH has been a valued UMOM partner since 2000. In 2011, to
better serve our community’s most vulnerable population, PCH
opened one of the first on-site clinics at UMOM’s emergency shelter
for families. Now called our “Wellness Center,” PCH staff treats
infants, children, and youth ages birth to 24 years old regardless of
their insurance status or ability to pay. Our partnership with PCH
allows children and their families to receive direct access to medical
care. Without our partnership, UMOM clients may not otherwise
be able to manage their family’s healthcare needs.
Thanks to PCH, our Wellness Center is equipped with an on-site
pharmacy and is staffed with a physician, clinical team member,
nurse, or medical assistant, a registrar, and includes a behavioral
healthcare therapist or psychiatrist. PCH’s mobile units also travel
to programs outside of UMOM’s emergency shelter to provide
medical care to our independent living sites for youth and our youth
outreach program in Tempe.
PCH now has four fixed-site clinics and more than four mobile unit
clinics that provide over 30 hours of weekly service throughout our
community. Last year, PCH had over 1,660 patient visits on UMOM’s

quality healthcare to families and youth experiencing homelessness.

Every single day Darlene fights to end homelessness for families,
children, women, and youth. It’s a fight that began over 44 years
ago, advocating for the homeless community and standing up
for what she believes is right.
Many of you have been fortunate enough to have met her, some
of you have read about her or have seen her on the news, but all
agree that her dedication to our community is palpable.
Darlene became the CEO of UMOM in 2002. Under her 18 years
of leadership, Darlene has overseen program enhancements,
agency mergers and transformations, and capital campaigns.
Her perseverance led UMOM to grow from a $3M organization
in 2002 to a $25M organization today. Unwaveringly, Darlene
led UMOM toward its vision to break the cycle of homelessness.
Darlene is a force to be reckoned with. Her desire and passion
for serving our most vulnerable community members inspires
action. She advocates to advance best practices in shelter and
housing services to ensure that no family, woman, or youth has
to live on the street.
Darlene intentionally makes everyone feel special – clients,
volunteers, donors, and staff. She believes in customer service
excellence. The skills, knowledge, and “go get ‘em” attitude that
Darlene has instilled in all UMOM staff by example has guided
the work we do every day.
Darlene’s vision became a reality after raising over $24M in
UMOM’s HELP (Housing, Employment, Learning, and Purpose)
capital campaign to create the New Day Centers Family Shelter.

She led the 2009 “Extreme Move Over” as
our shelter families crossed the street to our
new location. She oversaw the expansion
of shelter units to serve more families
each year. She joined the effort to create
Maricopa County’s first coordinated entry
site for families. She pushed for support to
create more efficient housing programs.
Her dream to create the first full-service
emergency shelter for single women in
Phoenix was realized after raising nearly $5M toward the W.I.N.
(Women in Need) capital campaign.
For Darlene, standing back and doing nothing was never an option.
She led our team to “Focus Forward” during the acquisition
of programs and staff from Tumbleweed Center for Youth
Development, the former homeless youth service provider.
Throughout all UMOM’s growth and change, Darlene cherished
and nurtured her relationships with community supporters and
donors. Through speaking engagements and group or one-on-one
meetings, Darlene shared client success stories that reinforced
UMOM’s work to end homelessness. Darlene has changed
countless lives and is a daily inspiration to many.
Our sincerest gratitude goes to Darlene for her incredible
contributions to the entire UMOM family – clients, donors,
staff, supporters, and volunteers. Words alone are insufficient to
express how much you mean to our community. Congratulations
on your upcoming, well-deserved retirement. We will miss you.

involved with UMOM. What a remarkable organization, one that
