Sermon Outline
Focus: Life is full of problems, and every single person has experienced heartache or danger at some point
in their lives. When we place our trust in Christ, we do not find ourselves immune to life’s problems, but
we can experience true rest and peace in the strength and sacrificial love of Jesus.
I. Psalm 91:1-16: A prayer of rest
Pilot: “You just obey instructions; we will take care of the obstructions.”
Psalmist showing us how to have peace in a dangerous world
II. Our broken and sin-saturated world
Reasons to worry
Life’s problems
1. serious illness
2. bereavement (mourning loss through death)
3. relational betrayal
4. financial ruin
III. The promise of peace
God’s promise of protection in psalm 91
1. Fortress filled with shields and ramparts
2. Mother bird gathering her hatchling under her wings
The promise is NOT: “Nothing bad will ever happen to you.”
Satan quotes this psalm to Jesus (Matthew 4:5-6)– Satan wants us to believe that belief
in God will make us immune to pain, causing us to be disappointed in God
The promise IS: God will save us “in trouble,” not “from trouble.” (the “real you”)
2 Corinthians 3:18; 4:16-17
IV. Sevenfold promise
First four promises - God will:
Rescue, protect, answer our prayers, and be by our side in trouble
Final three promises – God gives us honor (glory)
V. The cross
Both the righteous absolute power (fortress) and the sacrificial loving weakness
