Ensemble photography: David Cooper
Backstage photography: Peter Andrew Lusztyk Cover: Alexis Gordon backstage (Brigadoon, 2019)If this terrible, beautiful year has taught
us anything, it is this: we need human
contact. If the only connection we can
have with our loved ones is through a
screen, we will make the best of it; but
we know it is not the real thing.
While it has never been more
challenging to make theatre, it has
never been easier to make the case
for theatre. Whether the piece is
provocative and difficult, or silly and
delightful, the same basic human
need is being fulfilled: to share the
experience of something being created. We have to be there, because we
are creating it together: when the magic happens, our hearts and minds
combine to create an experience that is a million miles away from that of
watching a movie, still less a live stream of a play, however well done.
But if this year has taught us how valuable theatre is, it has also taught
us how vulnerable it is. As theatre artists, we try to be ready for anything.
But how does one prepare to have a whole season wiped out? I called it a
terrible and beautiful year, and it has been both: terrible not to play, but
also beautiful to see people taking such care of each other. For myself,
I have never seen anything like the way that you, our audience, have
rallied round in support of us, by keeping your money on account, by
donating the price of your ticket, or by renewing your membership.
It’s time to pay you back.
We have a great season planned. We have reduced it slightly to give
us more time for hygiene protocols, but we have room to expand if
the situation improves. If that happens, we have some great ideas
up our sleeve for treats we can throw into the mix. But of course our
first priority has to be safety. We have a duty of care to you and to our
Company, and we will do everything possible to make sure that you can
come to the theatre with confidence (for our latest safety measures, go
to page 12). Yes, we know only too well that things can change; I may
have to ask you to adapt with us; but I hope and believe that next year
all the twists and turns will be on stage.
Stay safe. We can’t wait to see you.

27REAL. HUMAN. ENCOUNTERS.
In March of 2020, The Shaw announced its
2019 results, including the best financial
results ever and best attendance in over
10 years. 1900 education and outreach
events added to that, provoking wonderfully
intelligent discourse, investigation and
debate among audiences, staff, volunteers
and artists. We were riding high and 2020
was going to be even better. Then the
pandemic struck and, two weeks later, the
province closed all theatres by public order.
We were fortunate to have taken out
pandemic insurance that insulated us
against some of our loss. We used that, and many government programs, to keep our
team here employed and to remain optimistic about getting back to our stages. Weeks
became months, and our optimism continued, but with diminishing expectation – like
a solitary light trying to hold back the shadows.
We knew that someone had to be a beacon. So many theatres and arts institutions
were being lost. So many colleagues out of work. We were still going. It was our duty,
as a leading cultural charity, to hold up that light, no matter how diminished. To try
and be the place where art continued, despite all outside forces. The Shaw should be
a place where everyone feels welcome and where all people can come to reconnect with
themselves and gather with others. Not digitally. Real Human Encounters. All year we
have heard from so many of you on how much you missed and need that.
2021 offers much of the season we lost and adds some new ideas that respect the
continued difficulties that face us. Our insurance will no longer provide us a safety net.
Now we look to you and ask if you can help us to fuel the flame for 2021 and banish the
shadows around us. To let us continue to be that beacon.
As one of the very few remaining ensemble repertory companies left in the world,
ticket sales normally cover only about half of our expenses and this year we will be
more reliant than ever on that philanthropic investment. Whether you are one of our
cherished long-time donors, wonderful corporate partners, foundation granting bodies
or recent friends, we invite you to consider increasing your support if you can. So many
are impacted by these extraordinary times, it is up to those of us who can help to do
what we can to support those things we care about.
We hope we are one of these things for you.
Thank you again and we look forward to seeing you in person soon!
