THE MUSIC
Slapstick is proud to present world-class live musical accompaniments for its silent film screenings, from solo
piano improvisations to full orchestral scores and this year is no exception.
At our gala, Chaplin’s Modern Times (1936) will be accompanied by a 40-piece orchestra. Led by Roger Huckle
they will be performing Chaplin’s own score conducted by Slapstick’s Musical Director, maestro Günter A.
Buchwald. The unstoppable four-piece ensemble European Silent Screen Virtuosi (ESSV), in the form of Günter
A. Buchwald (violin, piano), Frank Bockius (percussion), Romano Tedesco (double bass) and Marc Roos (trumpet),
return to provide accompaniment for a series of special events this year including Sally Phillip’s Louise Brooks
event at Bristol Old Vic, Harold Lloyd’s For Heaven’s Sake (1928) at Bristol Cathedral and Les Deux Timides
(1928) at Watershed.
We are delighted to welcome back the world’s foremost silent film harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry, who’ll be
accompanying a selection of short comedies for us on solo harp; pianist and composer Daan van den Hurk
and our long-serving pianist John Sweeney, as well as ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue’ very own Colin Sell.

Early Slapstick Animation
With Peter Lord
SAT 19 JAN 0930hrs Watershed £5.00 - £8.00
Cinema was still a precocious toddler when it acquired a brash,
bouncy sibling. No sooner had the great silent comedians
worked out how to put slapstick into the movies than cartoonists
got in on the act, using the unique properties of animation to
bring ever more inventive and hilarious films to the screen.
Peter Lord, co-founder of Aardman, will present some unusual
gems from the early, magical days of animation – featuring a
cast of cats, rabbits and of course, one very famous mouse.

opening weekend for a comedy film in the UK. The boys have finished school forever, and are off on their
first lads holiday in Malia – with lots of fantasies but not much idea of reality. It’s a real coming-of-age film

and there’s a proper feel-good vibe to this film!
