Welcome

  The Orillia 2020 Ontario Winter Games is run by a Games Organizing
  Committee (GOC). The committee, which is led by enthusiastic community
  leaders, has helped shape the Games and created a unique event that will
  welcome all of Ontario to Orillia and area.

 The first Ontario Games were hosted in 1970 in
 Etobicoke.

 The Orillia 2020 Ontario Winter Games is supported
 by the Province of Ontario, through its Games Ontario
 program

 Five Games are run through this program biennially:

    1. Ontario Winter Games – 2020 Orillia
    2. Ontario Summer Games – 2020 London
    3. Ontario 55+ Summer Games - 2020 Peterborough
    4. Ontario 55+ Winter Games – 2021 Brantford Brant
    5. Ontario Parasport Games – 2021 Mississauga

Why the Ontario Winter Games?
The Ontario Games program plays an integral
role in sport/athlete development as well
significantly contributes to sport tourism.

For host communities:
• Increases tourism and visitors to the area.
• Builds sport hosting resume which leads to
  more sport events.
• Builds community spirit and pride.
• Develops a strong base of qualified
  volunteers.

 Report all incidents to Sports Manager
 If you can eliminate the problem safely, do so
 Record details on an Incident Notification Form
 Incidents include Personal Injury, Hazards, Property
   Damage and Loss, Workplace Violence, and
   Environmental Damage
 Do not directly intervene in any suspicious activity

 Accessibility means simply giving people of all abilities
    opportunities to participate fully in life

Accessibility not only helps persons with a disability, it also
benefits:
 Seniors
 Families travelling with young children

Tips on helping a Person
with a Disability
  “Ask First” if the person needs or wants your help – do
   not just assume that they do.

  Allow the person to identify how best to assist them

  Do not touch the person, their service animal and/or
   their assistive device/equipment without their
   permission

  Follow these accessibility tips to help make the games
   more inclusive and welcoming for people with
   disabilities

Volunteer Checklist
❑ Arrive on time
❑ Check in with the Sport Manager
❑ Receive your accreditation and keep it with you
❑ Always wear your volunteer shirt while on shift
❑ Wear proper clothing and footwear (outdoor or
  indoor depending on venue)
❑ Leave valuables at home but be sure to have
  your driver’s license if your role involves driving
❑ Carrying a cell phone would be beneficial
❑ Bring food, water bottle and snacks (food will
  NOT be provided)

Things to Remember

1. Check in with the Sport Manager at start of shift
   to receive accreditation badges

2. Please arrive 30 minutes before your first shift
   and 15 minutes before your regular shift

3. When on duty please wear your accreditation and
   volunteer shirt

 4. Do not put yourself in a position that makes you
    feel uncomfortable

 5. If a situation occurs that you are not able to deal
    with report the issue to the Sport Manager

 6. Notify your Sport Manager if you are unable
    to attend or are going to be late for your
    shift

When things don’t go as expected

 1) CONTROL EMOTIONS
 • Take it professionally, not personally.
 • Separate the person from the problem.

 2) CALM THE INDIVIDUAL
 • Listen to understand.
 • Show empathy.
 • Take responsibility for solving the problem.

 3) FIND A SOLUTION
 • Try to resolve or address the individual’s concerns
 • If a solution is not found, contact the sport manager

What to expect before your first shift
•   Please continue to check your email and the Orillia2020
    website as important information will be communicated to you
•   Please review this PowerPoint when posted on the Orillia2020
    website
•   Schedule your shifts on the InItLive system
•   If you are volunteering for the opening ceremony, you will
    receive your accreditation badge at the Orillia Waterfront
    Centre prior to the ceremony
•   Complete your criminal record check, upload it to InitLive or
    bring it to the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department at
    Orillia City Hall

Steps:
- www.orillia2020.ca and Click “volunteer”
- Click “click here to volunteer”
- You will be taken to InitLive
- Click the green button that says edit sign up or sign up
- If it is Sign Up for this event- then type in your email and password
- You will be taken to a sheet that says “please fill out the form questions”
- Ensure this is filled out and click next.
- You will be taken to “Roles”, select which one you would like.
- You will be taken to availability. ENSURE YOU SELECT YOUR
  AVAILABILITY!
- Click next.
- Select which shifts you would like
- Keep an eye out for communication from the GOC and your Sport
  Manager
