HISTORY
Manurewa, a small South Auckland township, developed with the coming of the railway
prior to 1900 and in 1916 was constituted a town district, designated a Borough in 1937,
and joined Manukau County in 1965 to form the new Manukau City.

In 1886, Manurewa became part of the Parochial District of Mangere-cum-Manurewa with
services held at St David’s, Wiri. The first service in Manurewa was held in 1908 and St
Luke’s was dedicated in 1910. By 1951 Manurewa had become a parochial district and a
house in Lupton Road was purchased as a Vicarage. The present St Luke’s was built in
1983.

The Parish is bounded by the Parishes of Papakura (to the south), Clendon (to the west),
Papatoetoe (to the north), Clevedon and the Mission District of Flat Bush (to the east). All
these parishes are in the Archdeaconry of Manukau which is a part of the Southern Region
of the Diocese of Auckland.

The boundaries include Manurewa and surrounding areas such as Wiri, Homai, The
Gardens, Totara Heights, and Mahia.

COMMUNITY1
Manurewa has a population of 95,670, with 36% Pacific, 29% European, 26% Maori, and
25% Asian. Of these there are 26% under the age of 15, and 8% older than 65 years.

This culturally and socially diverse community has opportunities for growth and outreach
and is reflected in social and educational activities in the area, with Manukau City as a hub.
There are several schools in Manurewa catering for Primary to Secondary age groups. The
Vicarage is zoned for Manurewa Central Primary, Manurewa Intermediate on Russell
Road, and Manurewa High on Browns Road.

Train, bus, and road travel are all easily accessed from Manurewa, with links to Auckland
City and to the South.

CURRENT PARISH ACTIVITIES
The current Manurewa congregation has many experienced people who are supportive of
and reach out to the community, often having close family ties and history within this
parish. They support a traditional Anglican liturgy and appreciate having a local place of
worship.

Lay Ministry. At St Luke’s each Sunday the Vicar is assisted by a Liturgist, Readers for
Lessons, leading intercessory prayers, and serving at Communion. This roster is arranged
on an annual basis.

The parish has a part-time Administrator who prepares the weekly “News for Pews”, banks
any monies, and collects the mail. She liaises with the Vicar, Vestry and the Treasurer. St
Luke’s has co-ordinators for Forever Young, Friday Friends, and for the Prayer Chain.

There has been a Foodbank onsite at St Luke’s supported by the Auckland City Mission
which had become increasingly necessary over previous years. This was suspended in
2020 due to Covid 19 restrictions, but we are in discussion with the Methodist community
to restart this service combining with their providers and the Auckland City Mission, and
using the St Luke’s church hall facilities for distribution from Russell Road. Negotiations
are ongoing and we hope to return this valued service as soon as possible.

The St Luke’s Hall is available for hire and is used regularly by several community groups.

A group of older citizens attend the Forever Young Friday mornings to socialise over board
games and morning tea.

Friday Friends meet monthly for lunch and have proactively encouraged the congregation
to support the Anglican Trust for Women and Children and knitting for Kids First.

The active Social Committee organise an annual gathering for parishioners. Last year we
had a Brunch and Bubbles morning complete with entertainment. This committee also
arranges for the decoration of the changing church seasons.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR MINISTRY IN THE FUTURE
In November 2020 the Parish met to discuss priorities for ministry into the future. We
invite a new Vicar to work with us in developing these goals.

   • Meaningful worship and prayer, alongside the development of a diversity of worship
and different use of the available worship spaces.
   • Improved relationships with our Tikanga partners, parishioners and the wider
community with home visits and wider use of the facilities.
   • Reinstatement of Home Groups e.g. Lenten Studies, and extending a ministry with
     younger people.
   • Develop the Foodbank and the necessary partnerships that support it.
   • Be present in the community at events and activities where the church is welcome.
   • Restore and grow the heart and confidence of the congregation by developing
     prayer and pastoral care.

OUR NEW VICAR
Our new leader will have qualities that bear in mind our history, priorities and
opportunities as outlined above. These qualities will include:

   • Multicultural outlook
   • Pastoral care
   • Drive, enthusiasm, and energy
   • Life experience
   • Broad theology
   • Family friendly
   • Sense of humour
   • Able to plan and lead worship sensitive to our needs

involved in the lay ministry of the parish and be able to forge a synergistic environment

leadership for the parish ministry, actively supporting religious education programmes,
