Johnson ATTENTION PBM MEMBERS: Here’s an overview for March 1-31, 2021: 1. Club Meetings: March 8, 1730, Sahuaro Ranch Park, Glendale, See below. 2. Board of Directors Meetings: March 10, 1800, via Lifesize video conference. Also see below. 3. Regular Tournaments: March 13, Alamo Lake (Cholla Camping Area C). Also see below. 4. March Tournament Entries Due: Noon on Friday, March 5. Also see below. MISC INFORMATION Updated 2021 Members List. Three new Boaters joined PBM in February: George Morrison, Mark Serrano and xxx. Two new Nonboaters joined, too, as legacy members with their sons, who joined in January: the dads are Jake Wadsworth and Jake Lott. I guess no more guys named Chris were available. Meet them all at the club meeting on March 8 (see below) and/or the tournament at Alamo Lake on March 13 (see below). To promote family fishing, the Wadsworths and Lotts will be ALL be fishing from one boat, as two father-son teams! The Members List has been updated accordingly (based on available information) and will be distributed to all 2021 members today. Reminder: The Members List has the phone number, email address and home address for every member, so please use it! To protect personal information, the Members List is NOT uploaded on the PBM website; distribution and use are restricted to current members. PBM Will Meet Again, IN MARCH!!!! Yes, we will! The in-person meeting will be in Saguaro Ranch Park, on the west side of 59th Avenue between Olive and Cactus, at 9802 North 59th Avenue. The ramadas will probably be closed because of Social Distancing, so we will probably meet in or near the main parking lot. Mark Figueroa will set up a table for Board members who need to write things down, but everyone is encouraged to bring a lawn chair if they want to have a seat – no less than 6 ft from your nearest neighbor. Meanwhile, PBM’s primary tools for communicating about club matters continue to be email, our website and (less so) our public Facebook page. I say “less so” about the Facebook page because it yields 10 times as many messages from “consultants” who want to sell us “improvements” for it as it does visits by non-members and 100 (1000?) times as many spam messages from “consultants” as visits by members. 2021 Membership Dues ($50.00). These may be paid by personal check, money order, cash or (preferably) electronically via Zelle or Venmo. A 2021 Membership Form must be submitted with your dues. Download the Membership Form from our website. Do not pay Membership Dues with your Tournament Entry Fees; they must be handled separately. Methods of dues payment are: (1) Electronic Transfer (the preferred method!)): Send your Zelle or Venmo payment AND a completed 2021 Membership Form to: phxbmaz@gmail.com. Note: Zelle and Venmo ONLY accept credit cards (not debit cards) as a method of payment. (2) USPS Mail: Send your personal check or a money order (NO CASH!) and a completed 2021 Membership Form to PBM Secretary Terry B. Johnson, 6021 W Donald Dr, Glendale AZ 85310. Make checks and money orders payable to Phoenix Bass Masters. (3) Cash payment: pay the Treasurer at the next meeting (if we have one) or at the tournament. PBM Will Fish Again. Our next Draw Tournament is March 13, at Alamo Lake (Cholla Camping Area), from Safelight until 3:00 pm. See our website’s Meetings and Tournaments Page for a Facts Sheet for Alamo. Phoenix Bass Masters, Inc. February 2021 Near-Monthly PBM Newsletter Page 2 of 11 is the heart of crappie fishing in the Arizona desert, so camping areas will be full and many favorite fishing spots on the lake will be occupied. Regardless, this will beat the hell out of fishing UnPleasant! Bathrooms and showers are available in developed camping areas. The Ranger Station has a small store and sells ice and firewood. And ice cream. Campsite monitoring is pervasive and enforced, so be sure to pay fees due for a campsite or for parking a second rig. I will arrive on Tuesday to pre-fish, so look at C-32 for my white Dodge Ram 3500 and trailered 2005 Ranger 520DVX if you want to camp a Safe Distance away. The Ballesteros’ RV will probably be there early, too. Payment for Tournament Entries and Side-Pots: The methods of paying Tmx Entries, Side-Pot Entries and lake-specific Nonboater Fees are listed below. If you want a dispensation, call the Tournament Director (623.764.4438). OR (2) Cash-at-the-Lake Payment of Entry Fee ($50): No later than Noon on February 12 (Friday), contact the Tournament Director (623.764.4438) and advise him you are entering the tournament but will pay the Entry Fee IN CASH to the Treasurer at the lake. (3) Cash-at-the-Lake Payment for Side-Pots ($5 each for 5-ber and Goon Fish): These entries must be paid IN CASH to the Treasurer at the lake. Terry handles all the logistical arrangements with Pro Bass Adventures. Anglers need only pay their lodge costs (all inclusive) and make their airline reservations (Volaris, only). Contact Terry for more details, even if you are only thinking of going. Seats are limited; first come, first served. FISH TALES is an opportunity for PBM members to share knowledge and opinions on sport and competitive fishing, tackle and boat-related topics. Previous articles have covered boats and rigging suggestions, trailer repairs, electronics and their proper set-up, tackle best suited to Arizona waters, favorite and/or successful presentations, etc. FISH TALES can also provide testimonials or other information about a specific PBM Sponsor. These articles may be submitted to the Secretary at any time, for inclusion in the next Newsletter. Pirated (and adapted) from an Old AGFD Article: Alamo Lake State Park (928) 669 2088 is open year-round to fishing and boating. It is in western Arizona, about 38 miles (61 km) north of Wenden. It is best accessed via a paved two-lane road off either U.S. Route 60 to the south or U.S. Route 93 to the east. The lake is nestled in the Bill Williams River Valley, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The park has four rental cabins and many campsites, some with power and water and most with picnic tables and firepits. For the most part, the park’s roads are paved. But the dirt and gravel roads all around the lake are fertile ground for off-road vehicles. Alamo Lake is a flood control and recreational reservoir. The park offers outdoor fun and premier bass fishing. All spring, there are many reports of 30 to 40 fish days of crappies, ranging from 9 to 16 inches, with the possibility of even larger fish. Water temperatures should be in the 60s in mid-March, as the bass begin to think about spawning. WINNERS AND WHINERS includes articles by competitors in the most recent PBM Draw Tournament to tell their side of the story. Theirs might even differ from their Teammates story. Regardless, these articles are intended to help other members learn a little more about what worked, or didn’t, and why! Chris Smith: Excited about fishing somewhere with a maximum depth of 12 feet. No deep diving cranks; they hurt my back on an 8-foot rod!!! No need for electronics; you can see all the structure!!! Matt and I had never fished here, but thankfully Google had plenty of satellite pictures. Carpooled w/Chris Calabrese; we live 1 mile apart. Got a text from Matt Morris, my fishing partner. He was leaving 30 minutes after we departed. Smooth sailing w/Chris to beautiful Quartzsite, AZ. We stopped at the fine dining establishment Mickey D’s and ate in the parking lot like a couple of rednecks. Then we were off to Lake Martinez. As we turned off 95 to Martinez, we see a red boat in front of us. Turns out to be Matt. Perfect timing. We pull into camp, set up and start talking smack w/everyone. All of us old guys went to bed around 10:30 pm. I went “low-profile” w/cot and sleeping bag. Forgot my beanie, so my head was cold all night. Thankfully, plenty of generators were going so no one heard my snoring. About 2:00 am I hear coyotes howling, but no worry the trash can is near Randy Bean’s camper, so I am good. Phoenix Bass Masters, Inc. February 2021 Near-Monthly PBM Newsletter Page 4 of 11 Up at 5:30 am w/coffee and breakfast burrito. HOT DAMN!!! Off to the pre-launch meeting and launching the boat. We are the last ones in and motor over to the Fisher’s Landing tules. About my third cast, I get a solid 2.5 pounder. Things are looking up. Matt scores a nice fish a few minutes later. We continue to fish that area, for nada. Off to Martinez, wherever the hell that is. Going upriver, the boat quickly slides right a little. I look down and we are in about a foot or so of water. Bounced off the sand bar and continued to Martinez!!! Once we get into Martinez, we see Jim Sandy and partner Mark Serrano pounding the tules. Figured we must be in the right spot. We start pitching Ikas, craws and Senkos. We pick up two more fish. Four bites, four fish. Damn – we nearly ran over one of those traffic barriers with the flashing orange light. Who would have figured that would be in the middle of the lake? We decided to go back to a tule point right near a metal shed. But Jim Sandy managed to slide in there and snag a four pounder. Damn that Jim!!! " %. We stayed in Martinez most of the day. Around 12:30 pm we $ # decided to go over to Ferguson just to take a look. Not much happening there except lots of wind. Back to Fisher’s Landing to hit the tules a few more times. No luck there. We weighed a solid bag at 7.88 pounds! Thanks to Danno Wolters and the weigh-in crew; nice job organizing the tournament, again!!! Great weather, nice lake, good friends, no cell phones, what more could you ask for. Till next time, tight lines!!! Terry B. Johnson: This was a very different tournament experience for me, and a mostly very enjoyable one, but not because of the catching. I slid into Fisher’s Landing Dry Camp at sunset on Wednesday. I had intended to be there on Tuesday morning for an extended pre-fish but was held up by arrival and self-installation of a new HDS Live 16 for my bow and an HDS Live 12 for the console. As they say, you get what you pay for – and my installation services were free. So, I arrived at Martinez with my electronics in considerable chaos, with a jury-rigged 3in1 transducer zip-tied to the Ultrex and feeding the bow graph, with a legacy LSS2 on the stern hull and feeding the console graph. The rat’s-nest of cables and other wiring (operator) issues yielded abundant interference and truly lousy Sonar readings on both graphs. So, after a brief test in Ferguson Lake on Thursday morning, with fewer than 10 casts made just so I could say I did, the afternoon was spent ignorantly working on the problems, as best I could identify them. I finally gave up and waited for a clarifying message from god. On Friday morning, god arrived in the form of Chris Borgers. That’s not a sentence you will see again in this lifetime. But Chris’s vast knowledge of electronics and his willingness to take chances with MY GRAPHS resulted in much better Structure Scan readings and MUCH better Sonar Readings on both graphs. So, I celebrated the progress and a gorgeous day by taking PBM Sponsors Nanette and Teke Ballesteros (Cosmetic Pool Repairs) for their very first bassboat voyage, and my first visit to the southern end of the area I would be fishing on Saturday. I loved the open water and magnificent tule beds above Imperial Dam. And the sandbars down there and enroute. I wished I had gone down there on Thursday! Due to familial COVID-19 concerns, I was due to fish this tournament solo. But, faced with leaving a Nonboater on shore, I invited Chris Mercado aboard at the last second, after DTD Dan Wolters gave his blessing. First step: Chris’ fishing license had to be retrieved from his campsite with the Ballesteros family. Chris is much like Stef Ballesteros, without the Manbun: a passionate young angler who works hard for his money but lives to fish. So, a few minutes after the rest of the club was turned loose, Chris and I put-putted over to Martinez Lake. We fished hard in Martinez all day, but we did not fish well enough. I caught our only 2.5 fish, and 1.5 of them were sub-13s (one by a measly ½ inch) taken from a rock-armored point on a 5150 Plastics straight-tail worm in morning dawn. Our only keeper was (I was told) a nice 3 lber, but on the bouncing PBM scale it only registered 2.72 lb. LOL – I thought it would weigh less than 2.5 lb! It came about 1030 on a Megabass crankbait FileName PBM Newsletter.202102.Final.docx
Phoenix Bass Masters, Inc. February 2021 Near-Monthly PBM Newsletter Page 5 of 11 that runs 4 to 8 feet deep. We think it was the smaller of two very nice bass that we had been trying to entice out from under a dock in 5-foot water. It was a very enjoyable day on the water with Chris. I hope he is able to join the club, as he has been planning to do for almost a year now, when Nonboater memberships open up again. Craig Rafferty: Fishing was a bit slow for Dan Wolters and I this weekend at Martinez. The fish we did catch were all keepers, including my personal best bass! Dan caught one up north and the rest of our fish were caught in Fisher's Landing. We both lost big fish on tournament day, Dan first thing in the morning and mine later in the afternoon. Those two fish would have given us our limit, but it just turned into another fish tale. I caught my big girl on a 5150 straight tail worm. Until Alamo, tight lines! RESULTS: MARTINEZ LAKE, FEBRUARY 20, 2021. Despite high wind warnings, PBM anglers competing in the Martinez Lake tournament on February 20 were greeted by clear skies and a beautiful sunrise. It was chilly (low 50s) but layers of fishing apparel provided the necessary insulation. Nine teams hit the water; a 10th team was a late medical scratch. Nobody caught a bass over 5 lb, so only 1st Place in Total Weight and Big Fish, plus a Goon Fish winner, earned checks. No offense to Robert and Thomas Davis for their late withdrawal, but I’d just as soon not have to say this again in March: we wish the Davis families the best possible luck and medical help in handling their situation. We look forward to seeing them at a future PBM tournament very soon. No word on how the January tournament medical scratches, Rick and Cody Garrison, are doing but we hope they are better. And, now, a word about scales: For context, if you were not among the Martinez contestants in the weigh-in line on the floating dock, various contestants expressed concerns at the weigh-in about whether the official PBM scale (Pro Tournament Scales, Model CS19) was giving accurate readings. Some folks thought their fish weighed light in comparison to weights on various personal scales. Others were concerned the scale yielded as many as three different weights for the same bag of fish, with as much as ½ lb separating high from low. Needless to say, as folks say just before they say something, discussion at the weigh-in and (for some folks) for some time afterward was “lively.” Regardless, because some folks had already released their fish before serious reweighing could even be considered, DTD Dan Wolters decided to take weights as they were recorded. After all, NOBODY was in serious contention for st toppling Jim Sandy and Mark Serrano from 1 Place Total Weight. But, the question for Big Fish was less certain, with a few 4-ish to 4+ lbers weighed in, including Craig Rafferty’s new Personal Best (kudos, Craig!). DTD Dan’s Comments: Thanks to everyone that came out to fish Martinez. Fishing was slow for most and good for Jim and Mark. I just wanted everyone to know that I have checked the scale and it is weighing the correct weight. I went through the manual again and it is saying that wind is the one thing that the scale cannot account for. So, in the future we will try to do a better job at keeping the scale out of the wind. Thanks for everyone's understanding. Also, if you are coming to Alamo Friday and want to be in on food, Sponsors Nanette and Teke Ballesteros (Cosmetic Pool Repairs) have offered to cook that evening. They will provide the food. We as members would pay them $10.00 a person. I will send an email asking who would like to participate, so we can have a good head count. Thanks again and see you at Alamo. Editor’s Note: Didn’t Yoda say, “Do or do not. There is no try.” I don’t know of anyone who questioned whether the scale is accurate, when used in the proper conditions. The complaints I heard were that the scale was giving inaccurate, inconsistent weights on the floating dock, which was bobbing in wind and waves, with tremors from human footsteps added to the mix. Regardless, if anyone is still concerned about use of the scale, I suggest bringing them up in the Club meeting on March 8 (see Page 1), so we can put this to bed. Things tend to fester when folks think that their concerns have not been heard and addressed satisfactorily. And satisfactory, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder.
