WELCOME TO MAYESBROOK PARK
                    Barking V Dunstable Town
Good afternoon ladies, gentlemen, girls and boys.
Today, thanks to the hard work, dedication and
generosity both in time and money of the people who
voluntarily keep the oldest football club in Barking and
Dagenham going we are able to continue in our 141st
season, our 3rd century and our 56th season in the
Isthmian League.

We are very pleased to welcome the players, supporters and officials of
Dunstable Town and of course our own supporters, any uncommitted
visitors and those most important people the referee and assistants,
without whom we would have no game. We hope that you enjoy your
visit and that we all have a safe journey home.

Our most recent meeting was on 13-10-2012 in the FA Vase when we
were defeated 3-0. Statistics from other games against Dunstable Town
and other results on this day of the year can be found on page 14.

DUNSTABLE TOWN
For a Club that can boast the signatures of George Best & Jeff Astle, the first rung on the
managerial ladder for a young Barry Fry, the events of May 2017 were a troubling period in the
Club’s history. Initially formed in 1883 the Club’s history has many of the cliched tales shared
with other non-league clubs who have dreamt big, spent unwisely and repented at their leisure
and the frustration and sadness of their fans.

Between 1994 and 1998 there wasn’t even a Dunstable Town playing competitive football as the
Club folded at the end of the 93-94 season. Re-established four years later the Club had a snakes
and ladders period enjoying three promotions in a relatively short period of time before suffering
relegations and a points deduction at the end of the 2008-09 season.

And here we are again, eleven years later pitting our wits against others in the SSML. The
“Invincibles” team of the 2012-13 season got promoted from the SSML Premier Division without
losing a single game. Back to back promotions took the Club back into the Southern League
Premier Division and all appeared well.

With Creasey Park having been redeveloped at the turn of the decade the Club could boast a
superb playing surface carefully tended by the Council’s dedicated grounds team. But with gates
around the 150 mark at Step 3, and no income from match day food and drink sales nor a club
house to hold functions in to raise much needed cash, the Club was always going to struggle to
compete in terms of playing budgets and ultimately to survive.

Events culminated at the end of the 2016-17 season when a mid-table finish and early Cup exits
led to wholesale departures from the Club of the Board, coaching and playing staff. An
emergency meeting was held in May 2017, and rather than face the ignominy of seeing the Club
fold yet again or allow a Business Consortium to take over and seek voluntary relegation back to
Division 1 of the SSML, the fans decided to run the Club themselves.

Three seasons later, we’re still here. We had consecutive relegations out of the Southern League
but last season steadied the ship, finishing slightly below mid table before the season ended
prematurely as the Covid-19 Pandemic struck with devastating speed and cruelty. End of season
form would have had us in the playoff places had it been consistent all season.

Our arrangements with the local Council remain unchanged and undoubtedly our fortunes lie
within our own hands. There’s no mileage to be gained by complaining about a contract we
signed up to years ago by which Creasey Park receive all the bar and food takings on match days
and the proceeds from any events held in the Clubhouse. That for the time being is inscribed in
tablets of stone. Our task is to fund the running of the Club differently from conventional models
because conventional models are not applicable in our case.

Ideally we’d like to double or even treble our home support back to the 400 level in the Best &
Astle era forty odd years ago. Despite everyone’s best efforts that doesn’t look like happening
anytime soon so a Plan B, C, and D must be devised for us to continue. And why would we stop?
Since the fans took over the running of the Club, three players from “our era” have gone on to
sign pro contracts with Football League teams. Peter Kioso at Luton Town, Nathan Harness at
Charlton Athletic and Nick Hayes at Salford City.

We’re doing something right obviously. In Gareth Jackson & Ryan Sturgess we have two young
managers who share our dreams, our visions and our philosophy, and that, coupled with the
passion and desire of our loyal fans spurs us all on to keep the Club going.

BARKING FC 2-
Saturday 19 September 2020 – Pitching In Isthmian League South Central

Barking ended their opening day hoodoo after fighting back from 2-0 down to draw. The
point was their first on opening day since the promotion in 2017: our last opening day win
in the Isthmian League was a 2-1 win away to Molesey FC of August 19th 2000.

On the playing front the starting eleven saw two changes from last week's FA Cup tie with
Manny Agboola and Michael Dixon replacing Jack West-Astuti and Dumebi GB-Dumaka.
A poor first half saw its first chance of note after 33 minutes as Barking full back Keaton
Moore broke through the Marlow back line, with the ball near the edge of the box on the
left wing Marlow keeper Simon Grant came across with a clean sliding tackle to win the
ball but as it fell to Dixon he stayed out to defend with Dixon's subsequent cross finding
Abs Seymour who had beat his man but his header crept past the post. Despite a lack of
chances Marlow had been better on the ball and got the lead with five minutes of the first
half remaining as Ashleigh Artwell jinked his way past three defenders before slamming
the ball home and the visitors went into half time the happier of the two teams.

The second half started the same with Marlow having an effort from a corner blocked but
they doubled their lead from a set piece after 57 minutes as a deep free kick was headed
down to Ashleigh Artwell who placed the ball home for his second of the afternoon.
Barking got back in the game when the lead was halved after 72 minutes as substitute
Donnell Anderson's free kick was met by Keaton Moore who powered his header home
for his first goal in a blue shirt. Barking drew level seven minutes later - debutant sub
Isaac Westendorf saw his effort from Dixon's cross smothered by Grant with the ball
falling to Max Bradford, but Grant denied his powerful effort with another good save. But
the ball looped back to Bradford and he headed it across to Junior Dadson who
                               acrobatically guided the ball home.

Both defences were stretched in the final ten minutes leading to chances for both sides
with Agboola in the Barking goal forced into a vital save low down going across himself
from a driven cross. Barking in the end will be relieved to come away with a point.

BARKING FC 5-
                            September 22nd 2015 – Essex Senior League

Barking progressed to the 3rd round of the Essex Senior Cup as they breezed past Southend
Manor thanks to a 5-1 victory. 2 goals for Joe Omogiate alongside goals for James Barlow,
Sipho Mtyanda and Ryan Creed mean Barking have the possibility of facing league teams in
the next round of the ESC.

The first chance of the game fell to Southend Manor in the early minutes as they saw a volley
go wide and Barking thought they had taken the lead after 8 minutes as Glen Golby tapped in
from close range after Ben O’Brien’s header across goal but O’Brien had been adjudged offside
in the build-up. Manor again went close after 10 minutes as a ball over the top found a striker
who volleyed across Green who was left stranded but was relieved to see the ball smack the
post and go away from danger. The chance was further emphasised a minute later as from a
defensive long ball Joe Omogiate was able to get between two defenders, beat the onrushing
goalkeeper to the ball and poke the bouncing ball past the goalkeeper and into the middle of
the net to give the Blues the lead. It took 20 minutes for another chance of note for either
team and it fell to Sipho Mtyanda who saw his shot go wide of the post. A minute later
however and Mtyanda had his goal, Kieran English chested the ball down and with his back to
goal was able to split the defence leaving Mtyanda rushing in goal to slot the ball low and
through the goalkeeper’s legs. It was 3-0 three minutes later as Omogiate was fouled on the
right wing. Billy Reynolds, deputising at centre-back, stepped up to swing the free kick into the
box where Glen Golby flicked the ball towards goal and enroute it took a help touch of the
head of James Barlow as it rustled into bottom left corner of the net. The Barking onslaught
continued and after 40 minutes it was 4-0, English again the provider as this time he dinked
the ball over the top of the defenders with Omogiate onrushing and after again beating the
goalkeeper to the ball he lifted the ball over his head and into the empty net. Needless to say,
Southend Manor were relieved to see the half-time whistle go.

The half-time break clearly worked for Manor as after 17 seconds they had a goal back, as a
ball across the box from the left wing was taken past a Barking defender before being slotted
low and hard into the net. The 4-goal cushion was nearly restored after 55 minutes but
Mtyanda saw his shot hit the top of the bar and go over. Barking were equal to any further
Manor attacks but Reynolds was forced into a brave block after 72 minutes. O’Brien nearly
made it five as he stretched to head Omogiate’s cross but he was denied his first goal of the
season by the post. Omogiate saw two shots in a minute go wide before James Barlow also
shot wide in the 85th minute. It seemed it might have been a nervy end as seconds later
Southend Manor won a penalty in the box after an appeal for handball from a corner. Michael
Green was equal to it however as he dived to his right and was able to keep hold of the
penalty to preserve the Blues three goal cushion. The cushion became bigger in injury time as
Mtyanda’s corner to the near post was met by substitute Ryan Creed who headed hard and
high into the roof of the net for Barking’s 5th and his 3rd of the season.

With that goal the referee blew for full time to hand Barking progress to the 3rd round of the
Essex Senior Cup and they will find out their fate on Wednesday 7th October when the draw
will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Essex.
