                             Pinkeye in Cattle
The primary infectious agent involved in pinkeye is the bacterium Moraxella bovis, which is
present in carrier animals. The bacterium attaches to the surface of the eye (cornea) and
damages it by producing toxins. These toxins cause ulceration and severe inflammation.
Flies can play an important role in physically transferring the infective bug from animal to
animal.

Preventative vaccination has a number of advantages over treatment for pinkeye.
Vaccination reduces the incidence and severity of the disease, lessening individual animal
suffering and production losses. Pinkeye is often well advanced before animals are
treated and these animals often don’t respond well to treatment. Vaccination reduces
the need for antibiotics and therefore the risk of bacterial resistance or residues.
Vaccination can be administered at convenient times (e.g. calf marking, drenching)
and reduces the need for yarding cattle in hot, dusty conditions to treat affected
animals avoiding risk of further spread of pinkeye.

For more information about pinkeye in cattle and the preventative vaccine Piliguard®
please feel free to get in touch with one of the production animal vets today.

Note: Pilguard is a prescription animal remedy available ONLY under veterinary prescription.

Osteoarthritis is a debilitating disease whereby pain and stiffness develop as a result of wear
and tear on the joints. These changes are not curable, but you can help lessen the pain and
inflammation. Part of a targeted treatment plan for your dog may involve the addition of a
natural supplement such as Bomazeal® Mobilize or 4CYTE™ dog. These can help to
reduce joint inflammation and keep your dog mobile for longer.

4CYTE™ dog - daily feed supplement in the form of a gel
targeting biological pathways associated with joint health.

Bomazeal® Mobilize - tasty tablet containing Green-Lipped
Mussel Extract, deer velvet and shark cartilage.

              Premium Clostridial Protection
Coglavax® 8 provides wider protection against additional clostridial types suspected in
modern NZ farming systems.

• Protection against 8 Clostridial types.
• Coglavax® 8 protects against the traditional 5 plus 3 more.
• Coglavax® 8 is a 2ml dose for sheep & 4ml dose for cattle.

Young stock require both sensitiser and booster injections (4-6wks
apart) followed by annual booster vaccinations. Pregnant animals
should be vaccinated 2-4 weeks prior to lambing or calving.

At an approximately $0.05 premium (based on a sheep dose) over existing 5in1 clostridial
vaccines, Eastland Vets see Coglavax® 8 as a premium choice where extra risk management
is wanted e.g. situations where best practice 5in1 programmes are in place and clostridial like
deaths are still occurring, or high risk situations where animals are going onto crops or
forages. Call the clinic today to review with one of the production vets that you have an
effective clostridial vaccine programme in place with your sheep and cattle production
systems.
