2 | KULIN UPDATECEO CORNER 5 MARCH 2020
Welcome to my fortnightly CEO Corner as 2020 moves into it's third month - doesn't time fly when you're having
fun.
Finally a bit of wet weather in the past few weeks to break what has been a trying summer. It's probably not
often that our community was so appreciative of rain at this time of year. Varying falls were recorded around
the district with most days enduring some form of wet weather last week. Hopefully some farmers got some
runoff, or at least something to kick start a bit of sheep feed.
The long weekend brought to town quite a few visitors including a Caravan Rally at the FRC. Hopefully the
visitors were able to enjoy the local attractions and local hospitality that Kulin has to offer. It is incredible how a
few small attractions such as a nice caravan park, RV area, FRC and Aquatic Centre, can entice people to spend
their long weekend exploring Kulin and the surrounding community. It was great to see the local Hotel had a
few table bookings from many visitors on Saturday evening.
Speaking of the Hotel, I believe each week the consortium is edging closer to taking over the license. Yet
another initiative of the local community banding together to make a local business at the forefront of
community economic development. The Shire would like to wish Megan well in her new adventures, and can
certainly understand the thankless task that she has had running the Hotel these past few years; good luck
Megan.
I'd like to congratulate Cr Grant Robins on last week being re-elected as Deputy Chairperson for the Wheatbelt
South Regional Road Group. Grant is certainly passionate about infrastructure development within the region
and everyday sees first hand the condition of local and state government roads. The WS RRG is the local
government collective that bands together to address the road funding and upgrade requirements within the
region. It works closely with MRWA and other stakeholders to obtain funding and prioritise road investment
within the region. Grant and myself are always happy to discuss road issues and take these further with Council
and MRWA.
The wet weather has caused a few dramas with our Works Crew completing the widening of Dudinin-Jitarning
Road. Hopefully some fine weather will allow the seal to get laid in the coming week. I believe our resident
builder Ryan Brandis is busy this week undertaking some much needed repairs to the Pingaring Golf Club
building.
Applications are open for the Kulin Triathlon, to be held on Saturday 21st March at the Aquatic Centre. Contact
Ruth at the FRC for all details. Last year's event saw a huge contingent of kids and youth competing; let's hope
we can get a few more adults and adult teams competing this year. It's a fantastic opportunity for winter sports
to ramp up their preseason.
Good luck to the KDHS students with their faction swimming carnival this Friday. The weather looks to be a
balmy 30 degrees and I'm sure Jones will have the pool at optimum temperature for some fast times. It has also
been remis of me to welcome back to KDHS and the community Mrs Bev Stanes as Acting Principal for Term 1
this year. Many of the community will know Bev from her many years previously as KDHS.
On other sporting notes, the long weekend saw the local lawn bowlers converge in Perth for their annual
Country Week festivities. The Kulin Tennis Club held its Mixed Doubles Day on Sunday 23rd March;
congratulations John and Sara Wilson on their crushing win over Yvonne Bowey and Tom Bennier in the final.
This week sees the Roodogs take on arch rivals Narembeen in the Eastern Districts Cricket Association Grand
Final at Narembeen on Saturday; hopefully the weather stays fine and we can get a hearty contingent of vocal
supporters along for the afternoon.
Y a ndle
Until next time, safe travels.
ick

Caravan Rally
Over the Labour Day long weekend, Kulin hosted the West Coast Caravan
Club Rally at the Freebairn Recreation Centre.
We received excellent feedback from their coordinator; everyone involved
enjoyed their stay, and would like to make a special mention of the service
provided by Maddi and Wout who were 'excellent ambassadors' for the
community. Thanks also to the Hotel for their great dinner on Sunday
night. The group spent approximately $2000 in town, and enjoyed their
stay that much they would like to come back in the future.
