VICE-CHANCELLOR'S DESK MAHARASHTRA NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY MUMBAI

Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai established under Maharashtra National
Law University Act, 2014 is a culmination of the long-cherished aspirations of the law
fraternity to impart quality and advanced legal education and promote social-centric and
society research in the field of law. Within five years of its inception, the University has
excelled in academic and research heights and marched a long way ahead in fulfilling its
prime goal of disseminating advanced legal knowledge and imparting professional skills
to the students in particular and the legal fraternity in general.

Currently, the MNLU Mumbai is in the process of spreading its wings to the new avenues
of knowledge by integrating law with allied disciplines and supplementing and
strengthening the legal education with a practical orientation. MNLU Mumbai is the first
university in Asia to launch a master programme in mediation and conflict resolution which is a highly needed course in the
present scenario of dispute resolution. It has also launched LL.M in the investment and security laws in association with
National Institute of Securities Management (NiSM), an institution promoted by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
This course has now earned widespread recognition in the industry.
While propelling the mission of integrated and holistic legal learning and research, we also understand the need to strengthen
the legal profession and other wings of the justice administration system with constant up-gradation of knowledge and
expertise. Striving towards this direction we propose to introduce a series of short-term certificate courses and Post Graduate
Diploma Programmes through our different centres of research and study. It gives me immense pleasure to know that the
Centre for Research in Criminal Justice (CRCJ) is launching two Post Graduate Diploma programmes from January 2021, one
in Crime Investigation, Medical Jurisprudence and Forensic Science and other is Litigation Lawyering and Law Firm
Management. Both the programmes are much needed by the legal profession as well as the industry. The P. G. Diploma in
Crime Investigation, Medical Jurisprudence and Forensic Science is intended to bring in scientific and technical inputs into the
Criminal Justice dispensation system. The target group of the program are lawyers, law enforcement agencies, judicial
officers, public prosecutors, law students and all those who have a real and substantial interest in Criminal Justice
Administration. Law as a profession has pervaded into every walk of our social life. Every entity be it an individual, social
institutional or incorporated shall have to equip itself with appropriate legal armaments to meet any eventualities in the present
competitive world. The legal profession has assumed unprecedented importance during the last few years. But the profession
is yet to develop its management and training system. The P. G. Diploma in Litigation Lawyering and Law Firm Management is
a bold initiative towards this direction. While presenting these two programs before the legal fraternity, I also urge the young
talents to make optimum use of these unique opportunities.
REGISTRAR'S MESSAGE MAHARASHTRA NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY MUMBAI

Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai, one of the premier Institutions of
national importance in legal learning has recorded a consistent improvement in its
academic research and professional performances within a short span of five years
under the patronage of its Chancellor Hon’ble Mr. Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde Chief
Justice, Supreme Court of India and under the able leadership of its Vice-Chancellor
                                         Prof. (Dr.) Dilip Ukey.

With the first batch of students passing out in the last academic year with flying colors,
we feel proud in our commitment and the ability to deliver quality education which the
Legal profession, Corporate world and Legal academia demands. we believe that no
body of knowledge is complete unless it is linked to its allied disciplines and made
                                         practically viable

Keeping this in view, we have designed new courses and curriculum for the students. The practice of the legal profession,
being one of the noblest and oldest in the world needs to maintain its integrity and quality. It is possible only by inducting
qualified and trained lawyers into the profession.

The MNLU Mumbai has introduced two post-graduate diploma programs from the year 2021 as a professional booster to
practising advocates and other professionals. The quality of justice dispensation system is an indicator of the level of
governance. Integrating with scientific technology and modern management principles would enhance the quality and
efficiency of the justice system. Litigation is the major function of the legal profession which is left with no proper training and
management. The Post-graduate Diploma in Litigation Lawyering and Law Firm Management is the most needed and unique
course which can bring revolutionary changes in the legal profession. The Post-graduate Diploma in Crime Investigation,
Medical jurisprudence and Forensic science is certainly a milestone in the efforts to support the legal profession with scientific
and technological advancements. Both the programs are offered at a very economic cost. If these programs would serve at
least a handful of people to excel in their career, our task would get accomplished.

I am personally delighted to be a part of this noble endeavor as a Course Director. I am also thankful to our Hon’ble Vice-
Chancellor, my colleagues and all those who supported us with their inputs and guidance in formulating this course.
Our History MAHARASHTRA NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY MUMBAI

CENTRE FOR RESEARCH IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME MAHARASHTRA NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY MUMBAI

                P. G. DIPLOMA IN CRIME INVESTIGATION, MEDICAL
                      JURISPRUDENCE AND FORENSIC SCIENCE
A robust Justice dispensation system, especially a criminal justice system is one of the fundamental elements of good
governance. With the advancement in the field of Science and Technology, the scope and ambit of crime and the profile of
Criminals have undergone rapid changes. The technology-based crimes spreading across the borders are posing a great
challenge to the crime investigation machinery. With around 16% conviction rate in India, the Criminal Justice System struggles to
retain its credibility and the faith of the people. The new generation crimes which include white-collar crimes, Cross- border
crimes, cybercrimes etc have to be approached in a purely scientific and technical manner for which the agencies including the
police, prosecutors, judicial officers and the defence lawyers are to be trained adequately. The conventional methods of
investigation shall give way to scientific and technology-based investigation technique which would bring in rapid and accurate
results; capable of standing the test of technicalities involving rules of evidence. Forensic Science is a well-developed discipline
which can be made use in collection, preservation and analysis of evidence in a scientific manner during an investigation as well
as trial. Forensic Scientists testifying in the trial courts as expert witnesses act as gamechanger in many cases. The Standard of
Criminal Justice administration depends much on the exposure of Judges, Lawyers, Prosecutors and investigators to medical
jurisprudence. A proper application of medical jurisprudence principles into actual criminal Justice Administration will not only
improve the quality of the system but also would strengthen the confidence of the general public in the institutions of Justice.
With this objective, the Centre for Research in Criminal Justice of Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai proposes to offer
One Year Postgraduate Diploma in Crime Investigation, Medical Jurisprudence and Forensic Science. The course will keep pace
with the emerging developments in Criminal Justice and Forensic Science. The course will help create the well-informed citizens
on the criminal laws and with an exposure to the application of forensic science in crime investigation. The course will enhance
the competencies of the professionals working in the area of the criminal justice system. The proposed program will be of One-
year duration spread over 2 semesters with 6 subjects i.e. 3 subjects in each semester. Each course will be of 3 Credits which
include classroom discussion, online lectures, practical exposure, field visit and assignments. The program will be supplemented
by Seminars, Workshops, Conferences, Special lectures from experts etc. Each Course carries 100 marks with 50% internal
assessment component and the remaining 50% will be evaluated based on Examination and Project for theoretical courses. For
Practical Courses, there will be 70% Activity-based internal assessment and 30% will be evaluated based on examination/Project
Course Syllabus on each of the topics is carefully prepared by highly accomplished professionals.

                   P. G. DIPLOMA IN LITIGATION LAWYERING AND
                              LAW FIRM MANAGEMENT
Litigation plays an important role in resolving the disputes by holding responsible those who have committed a legal wrong. It
requires them to face those whose life and rights they have affected and to redress the wrong done to them. As a process litigation
acts as a deterrence with the ultimate goal of making our world safer. If the people lose faith in litigation and its outcome, they may
resort to unorganised and unrecognised means for resolving their disputes. Therefore, it is highly necessary to maintain and improve
the standard of litigation. Of late it is found that the standard of litigation and advocacy are falling down and marks negative
impression on the Justice dispensation System. With a view to provide Professional training to litigating lawyers and Law Firms the
Centre for Research in Criminal Justice of Maharashtra National Law University proposes to introduce a P. G. Diploma Program in
Litigation Lawyering and Law Firm Management.

Objectives:The objective of the course is to familiarize the students with the foundation of the litigation Lawyering and Law Firm
management to give an insight into its functional aspects along with the current trend of challenges faced by the legal professionals.

Education Method’ where the students play the major role by taking workshop assignments, Seminar papers and Student Lecture
Series. The Litigating lawyers, Corporate Legal Professionals, Partners, Associates and Non-Litigating lawyers in the law firms, in-
house legal Professionals are to be trained adequately. With this objective, the Centre for Research in Criminal Justice in association
with Centre for Clinical Legal Education of Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai proposes to offer One Year Post Graduate
