        UNIVERSITY REGULATIONS AND DISCLAIMER
University Regulations

All students are required, as a condition of enrolment, to abide by University
Regulations and any specific Degree Programme Regulations. Full University
Regulations are published separately on the University’s Web Site:

regulations

Disclaimer

The University is committed to providing a wide range of module options where
possible, but students should be aware that whilst every effort is made to offer choice
this may be limited in certain circumstances. This is due to the fact that some modules
have limited numbers of places available, which are allocated on a first-come first-
served basis, while others have minimum student numbers required before they will
run, to ensure that an appropriate quality of education can be delivered; some modules
require students to have already taken particular subjects, and others are core or
required on the programme you are taking so you must take these. Modules may also
be limited due to timetable clashes, and although the University works to minimise
disruption to choice, students should seek advice from their personal tutor on the
current module option choices available to them.

MSc Economics and MRes Advanced Economics

          WELCOME TO CARDIFF BUSINESS SCHOOL
Cardiff Business School offers a four-year degree of PhD in Economics. It comprises
two years of coursework, a dissertation, a Research Paper and the PhD workshop and
Departmental workshops. The first year is the MSc Economics programme. The
second year is the Masters of Research in Advanced Economics (MRes). The
dissertation is at the end of the first year; the Research Paper is at the end of the
second year in the form of a thesis proposal.

In the first year of the PhD (MSc Economics), students take core modules in
Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics and
Applied Quantitative Methods. Over the summer, students complete the MSc by
writing a dissertation. Students have to obtain an average of 60% across all modules,
including the dissertation, in order to be able to progress to the second year.

The taught part of the MSc Economics is devoted entirely to core modules but these
have broad coverage to include main areas of research interest (such as public finance
and the open economy); modules in specialist areas are undertaken in year 2 of the
programme. Students follow two double modules in macro- and micro-economics and
take two examination papers in each. Student contact hours are a minimum of 50 for
each of the two-semester modules made up of 40 hours of lecture/seminars and a
minimum of 10 hours of classes/seminars. The other one-semester modules each
have 20 hours of lecture/seminars and a minimum of 5 hours of workshop/seminars.
Students take an examination at the end of each semester.

The dissertation is intended to be a literature review of an area relevant to the
proposed topic of your PhD thesis. It carries 60 credits. The object of this review is to
consider carefully and critically what key work has been done in this area and how in
principle it might be advanced by your research for the PhD.

The second year is the MRes Advanced Economics and has 150 credits in 10 modules
plus 30 credits from the PhD Research Paper. The required core modules are in
Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics, and Advanced
Econometrics, plus Numerical Methods. Elective modules are in various Topics.
During this year you choose a supervisor for the Research Paper. This supervisor can
then act as your primary PhD thesis supervisor.

                                AWARD RULES
AWARD RULES FOR POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES OF STUDY

1. Background

Postgraduate degree programme regulations are consistent with, and conform to,
Senate Regulations which are published separately on the University's Web Site.
Students are advised to familiarise themselves with the following University
regulations which may be particularly relevant to them:

- Senate Regulations for Modular Postgraduate Programmes (Section 1.06)

- Senate Assessment Regulations for Taught Programmes (Section 1.09)

https://intranet.cardiff.ac.uk/students/your-study/your-rights-and-
responsibilities/academic-regulations

2. Reminder of key aspects of the Postgraduate Programme Regulations

a) Marking and Rounding

 A Module Mark will be calculated from all of the marks achieved in the
component summative assessments for that module. The marks for
the component summative assessments will be whole numbers
                between 0 and 100.

 All module marks will be rounded either up or down according to
normal rounding conventions (i.e. marks of .5 and above will be
rounded up to the next whole number) and recorded on the Student
Information Management System and student transcripts as whole
                numbers.

 All of the modules taken in each stage will be weighted according to
                their credit value.

 The marks from the taught modules will be combined according to the
model adopted by the programme of study to give a Final Mark. This
will be calculated, rounded, and recorded as a whole number using
                normal rounding conventions.

 The classification set for the MSc Economics is as follows:

                       Set 1
                                                    Weighting
                       Taught Modules 2/3 (66.6%)
                       Dissertation Module 1/3 (33.3%)

MSc Economics and MRes Advanced Economics

 The classification set for the MRes Advanced Economics is as follows:

                                                    Weighting
                        All Modules 100%

b) Condonement

The following rules will be applied by all Postgraduate Programmes.

An Examining Board shall award a student Credit in Module(s) to permit
Progression/Award where a Module Mark of 45%, 46%, 47%, 48% or 49% had been
achieved, provided that all of the below conditions are satisfied:

     1. the Module(s) is being assessed as a first attempt; AND
     2. the student has NOT failed more than 30 Credits; AND
     3. the student’s Level/Year Result in that Level/Year of study, in all contributing
        Modules, is at least 55%.

In such circumstances, the Module Mark (45%, 46%, 47%, 48% or 49%) confirmed by
the Examining Board shall not be changed and shall be used, where applicable, in
calculating any award classification. Examining Boards are not permitted to change
individual Module Marks.

Important Note:

Condonement will NOT operate if any module has been failed with a mark below 45%.
In such cases the student will be required to resit ALL failed modules and no modules
will be condoned.

c) Compensation

Compensation (i.e. the process of raising marks) is not permitted under Senate
Regulations.

d) Progression

Students must obtain 120 credits in the taught stage in order to proceed to the
dissertation stage.

e) Reassessment

A student who passes a module which he/she has previously failed will be credited
with the minimum pass mark (i.e. 50%).

On completion of the taught Modules students shall be re-assessed in failed
Module(s), provided that they can complete their Programme within the specified
timeframe, as set out in the tables below.

MSc Economics and MRes Advanced Economics

To Re-sit Modules in the next Re-sit Examination Period a student
must have failed no more than:

          PGT Re-sit rule set 1 60 Credits

To Repeat Modules in the next session a student must have failed no
          more than:

PGT Repeat rule set 1 105 Credits

Re-Sit Assessments

Each Examining Board and Board of Study has confirmed the resit rules by which the
Examining Board will operate and whether students are expected to resit the failed
component (i.e. coursework, exam, project etc.) or whether they take a 100% synoptic
resit examination.

All modules on the MSc Economics and MRes Advanced Economics are re-assessed
by a 100% synoptic exam.

Where a student is re-sitting a Module in the Re-sit Examination Period, the Module
Mark shall be calculated in the case of a ‘synoptic’ Re-assessment, from the marks
achieved in that Assessment only.

Important Information Regarding Resit Assessments:

Resit examination dates are published by the University online at the start of the
academic year and students should familiarise themselves with the dates:

dates/2017-2018).

Students are expected to be available during the resit period in order that they may be
able to undertake any required resits. Holidays or other events which prevent a student
attending resit assessments will not be accepted as extenuating circumstances and
the student will be deemed absent.

Repeat Assessments

Where a student is required to repeat assessments in the following academic year the
Examining Board will expect that these are taken as an internal student (i.e. with full
attendance on the module and undertaking all assessment components). This is to
allow the student to benefit from the tuition provided on these modules.

f) Classification of Award

To be awarded a Master’s Degree with Distinction a student must:

 achieve a Final Mark of 70% or above, AND
 achieve a mark of at least 70% in their Dissertation, AND
 achieve an average mark of at least 65% in their taught Modules.

To be awarded a Master’s Degree with Merit a student must:

 achieve a Final Mark of 60% or above, AND
 achieve a mark of at least 60% in their Dissertation, AND
 achieve an average mark of at least 55% in their taught Modules.

TRANSITION BETWEEN STAGES OF THE PHD
                      PROGRAMME

In order to progress to the PhD stage of the programme, you are required to achieve
an average of 60% or more in the taught stage of the programme (which includes
passing all modules and achieving 60% or more in over half of taught modules) and
submit your dissertation.

Your continued registration on the PhD is subject to you passing the dissertation
element of the Masters programme with a mark of 60% or more. Please note that if
you do not achieve this you will be withdrawn from the PhD programme.

STUDENT HANDBOOK

Further information is provided within the Cardiff Business School Student Handbook.

This can be accessed and found online by logging into Learning Central. The Student
Handbook will be on the MSc Noticeboard.

APPLICATION FOR ETHICAL APPROVAL

All research projects which involve the collection and analysis of human data (whether
funded or unfunded), conducted by staff or students, involving quantitative or
qualitative methods, require ethical approval. All students must secure ethical
approval BEFORE any data collection is commenced. Depending on the nature of
research project, those conducting research should complete one of three ethics
forms;

ETHICS 0 – A new form has been introduced for MSc and MBA students working
only with secondary data. This form is entitled ETHICS 0 Secondary Data Only.
Supervisors need to review and sign two copies of this form. Once signed, students
should submit the forms to the Postgraduate Hub. One form is retained by the hub,
while the second form is stamped and returned to the student. The student must bind
this form into their submitted dissertation or business plan.

ETHICS 1 – Ethical approval for low risk projects can be secured by completing the
standard ethical approval form, ETHICS 1. The ETHICS 1 form asks a series of
questions about the research project. If the applicant can confidently answer no to all
of these questions, then the standard ETHICS 1 form may be submitted. If the
applicant answers yes to any of the questions, they should complete the School’s Full
Ethical Approval Form, labelled ETHICS 2 (see below). Postgraduate students should
seek the approval and signature of their supervisor before submitting two copies of the
ETHICS 1 form to the Postgraduate Hub. The supervisors of MBA and MSc students
are responsible for ensuring that their students have fully considered all ethical issues
prior to signing the form. The hub will retain one copy of the form and return a stamped
copy to the student. The student must bind this form into their submitted dissertation
or business plan.

ETHICS 2 – If an applicant answers yes to any of the questions on the standard
ETHICS 1 form, or believes that their planned research may involve more than minimal
risk to the research team or intended participants, the School’s Full Ethical Approval
ETHICS 2 form should be completed. The ETHICS 2 form asks applicants to describe
their intended research methodology in detail and provide copies of all relevant
questionnaires, interview guides and observation schedules. Copies of consent forms
(if appropriate) should also be submitted. Completed ETHICS 2 forms should be
submitted electronically to the Ethics Committee Secretary via email at
CARBSResearchEthics@cardiff.ac.uk. The submitted form is reviewed by members
of the School’s Research Ethics Committee. The committee aims to respond to

applicants within a two week period. Student must bind the approved and stamped
ETHICS 2 form into their submitted dissertation or business plan.

Finding the forms –
Postgraduate students can locate all of the ethics forms via Learning Central. Here,
students should click on the tab entitled ‘research ethics’ (on the left-hand side) from
the noticeboard homepage.

It is extremely important to note that students are not permitted to commence
data collection until they are in receipt of an approved and stamped ethics form.
