St. Joseph’s Institution International Term 1 – Issue 16

Grade 8 Parent Survey Results
The final PST Conference for the year, for all Grade 8 parents, took place on 16 May, just before the Vesak
Day long weekend. As is customary, we asked all parents to complete a short Parent Survey, as part of this
evening.

An average 89.6% of all answers were rated Agree or Agree Strongly by parents. This is about 4% lower
than last year’s result, when this group were in Grade 7. This year’s result is the third highest out of all
Grade 8 cohorts - we have had 6 cohorts since we started this survey in 2014.

24 replies in total (out of 1932 answers) were rated Disagree or Disagree Strongly (again, there was not a
single Disagree Strongly). This still equates to a very low 1.24% of all parent feedback.

Two questions scored higher than when this group was in Grade 7:
Strengths

                                                                                             % of Grade 12
                                         Area
                                                                                                Parents
% of parents who Agree or Agree Strongly that the school resolves issues
of ill-discipline (including perceived issues of bullying) effectively and 89.7%
 decisively
% of parent who Agree or Agree Strongly that my child is making good
                                                                                                90.7%
 progress

Compared to the average score obtained by the previous five Grade 8 cohorts, 2 questions scored more than
5% higher than average, while 2 questions scored more than 5% lower:

Increased:
• I believe that the school takes account of student's views - increased by 5.9%
• Tonight, the time allocated for each teacher appointment was adequate - increased by 6.3%

Decreased:
• I believe that teachers treat everyone fairly and with respect - decreased by 6.0%
• I would recommend SJII to a friend - decreased by 6.9%

Overall, the results of this survey are lower than we had hoped for. We will be reviewing this data to identify
areas of focus, so that we can make changes going forward.

Thank you to all our Grade 8 parents for taking the time to provide us with this feedback.

Bach in Black Concert - 11 June – Please add to your calendar
I am very excited to announce a new addition to our music programme - the Bach in Black Concert. This is
an opportunity for our top Classically Trained Musicians to perform.

SJI International is blessed to have many outstanding classical musicians, and this is an opportunity for us all
to see these students performed some stunning and technically demanding pieces, including several
students currently preparing for Grade 8 and Diploma Instrumental exams.

Bach in Black will take place on Tuesday, 11 June, in the Glass Hall, starting at 19:00 hrs. This will,
undoubtedly, be a fantastic event. Looking forward to seeing many of you at this event.

Hair for Hope - 12 June
In what has now become one of SJI International’s traditions, we will again be hosting our Hair for Hope
fundraising drive on Wednesday, 12 June. Please consider sponsoring any of our brave shavees, which can
be done HERE.

Hair for Hope is Children's Cancer Foundation's signature outreach event where participants get sponsorship
to shave their heads to raise funds and awareness of childhood cancer. This money is then used to aid
children and families impacted by cancer this year. Our event also includes an opportunity for girls to cut off 8
inches of hair which is then donated to create wigs for patients undergoing cancer treatment. It is a fantastic
cause!

In Closing
It is hard to imagine that there are now only 14 school days before the end of Term 1. Looking at our
calendar, there are so many exciting events and activities in that short time. For Janette and I, this will be a
very emotional period, as we start to say goodbye to a school and community we love.

We wish you all a fantastic week ahead!
