Jordan Harris
Jordan attended the automotive course in the Hokonui Tertiary High School
Trades Academy Programme, which gave him a look into the industry, and entry
into the automotive trade.
After graduating from the Trades Academy automotive course, Jordan went on to
study the SIT automotive pre-trade certificate course followed by his job at Mobil
Te Anau, where he works today.
“I was encouraged to enrol in the automotive pre-trade
course at SIT, before I signed up as an apprentice, as
it teaches you valuable skills/tricks and info about the
motor trade.”
“While studying at SIT, I enjoyed the hands-on, practical
learning environment the course provided.”
Jordan is doing so well in his chosen industry, that he was recently awarded the
2018 Southern Region Motor Trade Association (MTA) Top Apprentice Award.
“To win the award is amazing and proves that hard work
pays off,” said Jordan.

What do you need to be accepted
into one of these programmes?
ªª You need to be in Year 12 or Year 13 at secondary school
ªª You need to be motivated to learn new skills
ªª You should be enthusiastic and ready to make a start on one of the career
pathways which are outlined in this guide
ªª You should have NCEA Level 1 including literacy and numeracy (although there
are sometimes exceptions to this)
ªª Your school must support your application
+
ªª You need to fill in a Trades Academy application form and provide a verified
copy of your birth certificate. Below is an extract from the TEC requirements:
+
1. Birth certificates/passports are not required for students who have a verified
NSI number. When a child is enrolled at school this creates their NSI number.
+
Being enrolled at school makes their NSI number active but not verified.
2. If the schools verify the student’s ID at the time the student is enrolled they
will have a verified NSI number. So if the enrolment process at school is done
+
correctly ID will not be required
International Students
For your information below is an extract from MOE international student regulations
International students are eligible to participate in an STP (Trade Academy), as per their
+
right to enrol (i.e. visa requirements are met etc). If the international students are fee paying
students, they will not be entitled to utilise STP (Trade Academy) funding for costs associated
with the course. Rather part of the international fee can be used to fund the tertiary
component of the programme. Therefore these students would not be officially recorded
as an STP (Trade Academy) funded students, but could complete the learning programme
pending agreement between the tertiary provider and school. If international students are
not fee paying students, for example the student’s parents are in New Zealand on a work or
student visa, that student will (in most cases) be regarded as a domestic student for primary
and secondary school. The student will therefore not need to pay international fees. Hence,
in this scenario the student will be eligible to utilise STP (Trade Academy) funding as their ote: all
school would be funded via regular operation grants and staffing entitlements. It is noted, *Please n
es are
that based on current tertiary education policy this type of student would not be eligible for programm nfirmation
co
free tertiary education (i.e. via other YG funding streams). The Education Act 1989 Section subject to
Ministry
31L also notes that a Lead Provider (or Provider Group) must not approve the entry of an from the

entry into the programme and is otherwise eligible to participate.
Costs: Please contact Abby Evans Trades Academy Coordinator for details on course costs
for international students.
Is there a Code of Conduct?
Yes, SIT and the secondary schools have drawn up a Code of Conduct that tells you what is expected of
students who are accepted into the Trades Academy. If you are accepted into the programme you will
be given the Code of Conduct at the start of the year and you must sign that you will adhere to it.
