Have questions about the project, or have some more input you would like to share?
Join the Town of Provincetown and Weston & Sampson for Virtual Office Hours where you will

Group. We’ll have all of the materials that have been presented ready to share, and will focus on either a
general overview for people who haven’t participated much to date, or to answer direct questions about
site opportunities and constraints. We’ll also be able to review online survey and workshop results.

Virtual office hours will be held via zoom during the following days:

2021 COVID SAFETY PROTOCOLS FOR ARTS DUNE TOURS

Due to the recent uptick in Covid-19 cases and much publicity it brought Provincetown,
Art’s Dune Tours wants everyone to know that we are still running with some of the same
safety protocols as last year to assure our customers and staff are enjoying the safest possible touring
experience. The continuing protocols are as follows:

· Plexiglass installed between the driver seats and passenger seats
· Windows are open during the tour. On rainy days, they will be cracked as much as possible.
· Masks are required while seated in the vehicles. This is a Cape Cod National Seashore mandate for
commercial vehicles within the park boundaries.
· All staff are fully vaccinated.
· All vehicles will be wiped down on commonly handled areas within the vehicles and outside door
handles with a CDC approved sanitizing solution.
· All tours are sold to private groups that are family or friends traveling together. We are NOT putting
strangers in the same trucks.
· Per Provincetown town ordinance, masks must be worn inside our office.

Please understand we are trying to do the best we can to provide you with an
enjoyable and safe touring experience and will greatly appreciate your understanding our guidelines.

Thank you so much!

The COVID-19 resurgence on the Outer Cape has triggered the closures of the two visitor centers at the
Cape Cod National Seashore.

park museum is closed as well, but restrooms and the America’s National Parks store are open.

Caution
       Warning: Keep Wildlife Wild
Wildlife accustomed to being fed may become aggressive in attempts to obtain food. This includes coyote
and fox. There have been serious incidents in the past few years involving
bites to people and pets. Keep your distance and do not feed wildlife.

Coast Guard Beach High Tide Advisory
Access to Coast Guard Spit at Coast Guard Beach, Eastham are impassable at certain high tides. Check
tide charts before planning your visit.

Stay Safe at the Beach - SHARKS
Lifeguards are on duty at Cape Cod National Seashore Beaches for the summer. Read and heed
advisories at beaches to help ensure your safety, particularly regarding white sharks. more
Coyote Bites Child at Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown
On August 11, 2021 at approximately 8:30 pm, a coyote bit a small child on North Herring Cove Beach within Cape
Cod National Seashore. The child was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Park rangers
destroyed the coyote responsible and will attempt to locate the body of the animal this morning so it can be tested
for rabies.

This summer rangers have been responding to incidents of coyotes acting assertively toward people in attempts to
obtain food. This behavior starts with people feeding the coyotes intentionally by leaving food out, or inadvertently
by not removing food scraps and packaging from the beach. This leads to the animals becoming habituated and
bold in attempts to obtain food. When wild animals lose their fear of people, they behave unpredictably and
aggressively, resulting in injuries to people and a sad ending for the habituated animal.

Keep wildlife wild. Protect your safety and the safety of others.
Do not feed or attract wildlife! Report assertive coyote sightings
to rangers or the dispatch center at 617-242-5659.

September 17 – 19, 2021. All events are free and open to the public. All events will be held carefully and safely at
the Provincetown Public Library. Final Covid protocols will be announced on September 1.

The Provincetown Book Festival opens on Friday night, September 17, with a reading and reception for the
recipient of the Rose Dorothea Award, given annually by the Board of Library Trustees to a person with a strong
connection to the Outer Cape who has made a significant contribution through the written word. The 2021 recipient
is performance artist and writer Karen Finley.

On Saturday, September 18, at 6:00 p.m., Provincetown memoirist Paul Lisicky will share the stage with Andrea
Lawlor, author of Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl. Both writers lived in Provincetown during the Nineties.

“We have a wonderfully diverse line-up this year,” said Nan Cinnater, Director of the Provincetown Book Festival
and Lead Librarian at the Provincetown Library. “We are featuring lots of non-fiction writers in addition to poets and
novelists. We have a number of LGBTQ authors and authors of different races and ethnicities. Some are
connected to Provincetown and some aren’t. But all of them are outstanding writers!”
Among the featured non-fiction writers are Animatta Forna, well known as a novelist but currently author of a new
book of essays, The Window Seat. Forna will appear in conversation with Jennifer De Leon, author of the essay
collection, White Space: Essays on Culture, Race, and Writing. Memoirist Maya Shanbhag Lang (What We Carry)
will talk about the politics of memoir with Rajiv Mohabir, (Antiman). Professor Kerri Greenidge will discuss the
history of Black political thought and her new biography, Black Radical: The Life and Times of William Monroe
Trotter.

Other featured authors include novelist Joshua Henkin, author of Washington Heights, in conversation with
Matthew Klam, author of the novel Who Is Rich?. Boston poet laureate Porsha Olayiwola and poet January Gill
O’Neil will read from their work and speak with each other on “The Future of Poetry.” Mona Awad, author of All’s
Well, will talk with Heidi Pitlor, author of Impersonation, about the uses of comedy in literary fiction. Two more
novelists writing about women’s lives – Hanna Halperin, author of the debut novel Something Wild and Lynne
Hugo, author of The Book of CarolSue – round out the program.

On Saturday and Sunday, there will be a giant used book sale on the Provincetown Library lawn.
On Saturday, September 18, at 9:00 a.m., five local writers will kick off the Festival in “Reading Local,” a special
reading curated by Lynne Hugo, author of nine novels and a memoir. More information about the program and the

This year’s event will include seven artists, presenting eight works: featuring internationally acclaimed
Boston Ballet and the Paul Taylor Dance Company, as well as world premiere works made especially for
the Provincetown Dance Festival and it’s new outdoor stage at Edgewood Farm, 3 Edgewood Way, Truro.

Festival Director Adam Miller said, “The new stage is a dream come true. When it was planned, we didn’t
even know how important a space it would be in this new world of performance challenges. It is such a
beautiful new venue for live performance, so we decided to pull out all the stops and bring some truly
stellar artists to celebrate this new space. The Outer Cape now has a new performance space to be truly
proud of.”

The Festival will continue to celebrate the range and diversity of today’s contemporary dance landscape.
The works will include the return of festival favorites, Sokeo Ros, with his inspiring fusion of Hip-hop
and the legacy of Cambodian dance, and a special return engagement of tap dance artists, Orlando
Hernandez. Thanks to a grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts, Hernandez will present a
world premiere with live music by saxophonist Leland Baker.

Critically acclaimed dancer from the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Eran Bugge, will perform a solo
choreographed specifically for the Festival and, for the first time, The Provincetown Dance Festival will
present Chyrstyn Kentroy and Paulo Arrais from the Boston Ballet, who will present two contemporary
ballet works.

The Hartford based Scapegoat Garden returns with a new work conceived by the dramatic dance
innovator Deborah Goffe, and from Seattle, comes a rising star of the contemporary dance work, Jade
Curtis Solomon-Solo Magic. Intense, inspiring and provocative, Curtis Solomon performed at the festival
several years ago and was a huge audience favorite.
Another audience favorite, the Portland Ballet, returns with a contemporary ballet duet.

The Provincetown Dance Festival continues its collaboration with co-producers, Adam Miller and The
Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill for over 15 years.

Castle Hill’s Executive Artistic Director Cherie Mittenthal states “ After years of
hard work and planning, I am so proud and excited to see such a beautiful new
performance venue become a part of Castle Hill’s family. Outer Cape audiences
can now expect many great performing experiences in an ideal outdoor setting.”

Sign up for the Swim for Life

The Swim for Life is pleased to enlist the creative talent of Jim Youngerman, a longtime Swim for Life
swimmer from Lenox, MA, to imagine and execute the 2021 Swim for Life design. A design is created
annually for the event, becoming the Swim logo, and is treasured as a testament to the generous and
artistic soul of the Outer Cape.
“The design for this year’s T-shirt grew out of a series of paintings I did this past spring which depict the
vague space we are all going through during the pandemic. The sort of outside/in and inside/outness of
our lives as we struggle to find a new normal, a new balance. The transparent walls allow the viewer to
see the bright horizon. The open and endless feeling one senses on the outer cape is captured in the
painting. Across the waters is a reminiscent view of Long Point lighthouse, where the Swim first began.
The color and tones and prayer ribbons which float out of the picture frame, reflect a hopefulness we feel
as a community, as we make waves and come together and forge a brave new course through uncharted
waters.” ~ Jim Youngerman
Jim has been a painter for the past 50 years, having solo exhibitions extensively throughout the US and
Europe. His work has been favorably reviewed, here and abroad in such publications as Art News, Arts
Magazine and Art in America. Arts Magazine once said of his work, “the content of Youngerman’s work is
the creation of a far-reaching mind, combining elements perhaps derived from dreams, or the product of
completely unharnessed meanderings of the imagination.” In 1980, he designed an award winning
theatrical set for The Man Who Killed the Budha in Los Angeles. He has subsequently designed many
sets for music, dance and theater. This summer he is designing the set for a production of King Lear at
Shakespeare & Co., Lenox, MA.

The legendary fundraiser, the Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla, sponsored by the Provincetown
Community Compact, will Make Waves on Saturday, September 11, 2021 with a new afternoon
harbor shoreline swim route, a new time, and a new post-Swim Mermaid Tea! Provincetown Swim
for Life & Paddler Flotilla has raised over $5M since 1988 for AIDS, women’s health and the
community. Proof of vaccinations will be required of all participants and the public. Local and
CDC guidelines will be followed.

“The Swim and the community made waves in response to HIV/AIDS and now we have a renewed
mission to strengthen our resilience as we act to create a more diverse and equitable future,”
states artist and Compact Director Jay Critchley. “Let’s come together once again in a celebration
in the town that we all love and support.”

The New Urgency: Taking Care of Our Employees
If the pandemic wasn’t enough in the absolute, we now know it also exacerbated an issue that business
owners were cognizant of, but didn’t consider critical—finding employees. With many owners having
found employees (or if you haven’t, keep at it) the focus has to shift to also how to retain those
employees. After all, the biggest advantage that small businesses have is providing better service—and
that cannot happen if you don’t have the best people. Remember—it’s far less expensive to keep an
employee than to hire a new one. So let's rethink how we manage and engage employees...

Bowersock Gallery will explore the modern still life with a dazzling array of 'takes' on inanimate
objects. Subject: insentient bits and bobs, is largely an expression of both hyper
and traditional realism where artists reflect upon the standard-bearer flower
still, more often than not via arranged objects. Some reference the traditional, while others
choose the decidedly contemporary.
"The popularity of still life never wanes," Curator and Founder Steve Bowersock says. "If
seventeen years in the gallery has taught us anything, it's that 'insentient bits and bobs'
please. And literally, 'still life' is just that: still...life...as in a pause. Whether humorous, political,
please. And literally, 'still life' is just that: still...life...as in a pause. Whether humorous, political,
or narrative, these works highlight a beautiful and commanding calm which gives us just the
perfect respite time to - breathe. It's not only a display of wonderfully placed objects to be
viewed, but as well, for us to stop...look...be soothed...and enjoy"!
Featured, are the paintings of Julie Beck, Natalie Featherston, Noriko Fox, Sydney Bella Sparrow,
and Brittany Haynes. Subject: insentient bits and bobs also includes David Random's mixed
media sculpture, where "found objects" are repurposed, turned on their heads, assembled and
transformed into something entirely new - sometimes a recognizable item, other times a
    creation completely abstract.
In addition to the themed center room, the gallery features two other rooms representing
Bowersock's scores of talented artists, exhibited salon style.

Artists Steve Bowersock and Jeanne McCartin share a passion for their work, a fascination with
symbolism, the working of the mind, and the need to share their stories. That's where the similarities
end, as they bring personal experiences and ideas to bear, and individual styles diverge.

The two artists, who have worked together for two decades, challenged one another to use the difficult
COVID period to dig deep into personal and cultural issues. “It helped that Jeanne and I were in constant
contact, throughout, sharing both process and pain. We talked about making a concerted effort not to
edit what was said, and just push new techniques to the limits. The challenge was to grab hold of any
fleeting thoughts; believe me, there was more than enough mental ‘casting about.’ We just hoped it
would be relatable, when all was said and done,” says Bowersock.

Bowersock is known for his surreal and dreamscape oil paintings, in multiple genres - landscape, still
life and figurative. For this exhibit he's focused largely on the latter. Amongst his current collection is a
series which explores the individual as experienced from the inside, and viewed from the outside. Other
pieces explore his search for a place in a culture that isn't always welcoming of his nature. He says, "My
latest work is a channeled self-discovery, where there's heavy usage of symbols, the language of the
universe. For example, animals can be seen as totems, with rich spiritual meaning behind them, an
exploration of lessons. Hands are 'all protective,' 'welcoming'...and of G-d or the other guy's realm,
depending on how the viewer interprets positioning.”

McCartin's work is largely contemporary polychrome, narrative sculpture. The works are a touch theater,
tarot card, Rorschach inkblots, along with personal and cultural statements, with the story always the
focus. Her primary materials are cellulose and polymer clays, and papier mache.

"Ms. McCartin pulls no punches. Letting it all hang out, her work says what usually goes unsaid - that
we are fearful, angst ridden, sorrowful, angry- all in equal measure. As aging women, we are unseen,
uncared for, left to our own devices, hoping to simply survive an unjust society. As creative women, we
we are fearful, angst ridden, sorrowful, angry- all in equal measure. As aging women, we are unseen,
uncared for, left to our own devices, hoping to simply survive an unjust society. As creative women, we
are belittled, seen as ‘bird brains.’ Our hard work is seen as play - not serious, not a part of the
patriarchic gallery and museum systems, but diminished because we use “crafty” materials such as
papier mache` or work in a “decorative” or narrative tradition," Christopher Gowell, Maine's Sanctuary
Arts, School of Arts Founding Executive Director says. "But do not make the mistake of belittling these
pieces. Jeanne's work has a power which speaks to all of us in our humanity, amidst our fears, and a
lighter side that speaks of the way we heal ourselves, fitting ourselves together again as we emerge like
a chrysalis from a hard pandemic year, celebrating our survival, ready to battle again…and again."

Bowersock concludes, "I think one of the most memorable comments Jeanne' made during the process
was, 'I think we've both left a little blood on the studio floor.’ And that about sums up 2020.”
