2ARC ANGEL– Rabbi Susie Heneson Moskowitz
M ost people are behind supporting the environment,
greening our world and trying to live in a way that
leaves our planet safe for future generations. But sometimes it is
hard. What really happens to our recycling? Won’t composting
smell? It costs too much money to use eco-friendly products.
But did you know that we are commanded to be Shomrei Adamah –
Guardians of the Earth?
We are taught early on in Genesis 1 that humans have dominion over the earth. This
phrase has been interpreted in ways that have caused us to rule over the
animals and plants in in effect to exploit the earth. But in the next chapter it says,
“Adonai, took Adam and placed him in the Garden of Eden to work it and to keep
it.” (2:15) Ahh, dominion doesn’t mean to rule over but rather, to care for and to be
responsible for the world. We are expected to take care of the earth. Many savvy
ideas are given throughout the Torah such as letting fields lay fallow every seven
years, protecting fruit bearing trees and leaving part of our bounty to feed the needy.
At TBT we are creating an Eco-friendly/Greening
Committee to help move Temple Beth Torah in the di-
rection of being a zero waste, eco-conscious We are commanded
facility. We are starting by looking for products we to be
can use that will be better for the environment, Shomrei Adamah –
increasing our recycling and composting, and Guardians of the Earth
creating less waste. We are researching being a
CSA (Community Supported Agricultural) pick up spot
and installing water refilling stations.
Along the way we hope to do a lot of educating and sharing the information we find
with you. Some of our efforts will reach beyond the walls of the Temple, into your
homes, our public schools and to the town.
Please let me know if you would be interested in joining this committee, we would
love to have you.
There is always so much going on at TBT, please look through this issue of the ARC
and check our website, so you can mark your calendars. Two very special
happenings are Touched By Torah 613 and our Purim Celebration with the Rad 80’s
shpiel and awesome carnival.
L’shalom,
Rabbi Susie Heneson Moskowitz

Cantor’s Corner
January 12th we had the great pleasure and honor of having
Pastor Jonathan Mack, and Elder Octavia Smith, along with choir members and
congregants from the City of Oasis Church, join us for our 2nd annual Shabbat
service and dinner honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It was a fabulous celebration. That evening
in addition to the joyous and uplifting song and prayer, we raised over $1300 dollars to help them
cover the costs of extreme damage to their church, due to the severe weather. Our drive to collect
toiletries and school supplies to help a shelter near the church was also very successful. We are
so thankful for Robin Weiner and Debra Brooks, who were both instrumental in making the evening
a success.
On Sunday January 21st, Rabbi Moskowitz, Rabbi Wiesenberg and I, as well as congregants from
TBT, attended the celebration of Pastor Mack’s 5th Pastoral Anniversary. We were invited to share
remarks and bless him. It was a meaningful experience for us all, and we feel so grateful and
blessed to have this wonderful relationship. We look forward to seeing this spiritual partnership
grow for years to come.

I'm so proud of our Religious School students who are involved in the Purim
Megillah Reading and Carnival! We have students acting, singing and dancing in
our Totally Rad 80s Purim Shpiel. We have students running booths, helping with
setup and cleanup. We even have students donating for baskets. If your child needs
community service hours, please ask me how they can help make Purim fun for all
of our families. Hunter, Reed, Jon and I will see you Sunday, March 4th for a
great - "Totally Rad" time.
Passover is a perfect time to "Do Jewish" as a family. 2 of our Collage credits for
the month of April can be done at home during Pesach: leading the 4 questions and
eating Matzah in place of bread. Don't forget to snap a pic and send it to me at
Rabweez@gmail.com And Check the Collage Board for your face!

18SISTERHOOD NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
Sisterhood had two fun recent events. The first was the
regifting party in January. Thank you to Judy Roth for
coordinating a fun filled night. Our second event was the
Challah Bake which we co-hosted with Shaloma Hadassah.
Women mixed ingredients to create fresh dough, braided it
and took it home to finish rising and baked on Friday to
share with their families at Shabbat dinner. Rabbi Susie
joined us and shared the history of Challah and the meaning
behind hundreds of years of this feminine Jewish tradition.
We will be making a donation to Hadassah Hospital in Israel
for stem cell research. Laurie Introp and I were a great team
and we hope everyone who attended enjoyed a warm and
yummy Challah. My thanks to her and the Shaloma
Hadassah members who helped us. We are planning a few
spring events and look forward to another winery trip with
Brotherhood this summer. Stay tuned for event details…
Warmly,
Fern Bernstein

Q: What should I do if I have extra food from shiva at my house?
A:If you have excess food from shiva (or any other function), consider donating
it to feed the hungry. Many have been taught that food shouldn’t leave a shiva
house. In some ways we still honor that teaching by not taking food out of the
house during shiva (This is the “Schnorer rule” – that people would take back
food that they brought or help themselves to the mourner’s food). Today many
of us are fortunate to not have to depend on the food that is sent and after
shiva would like to use it to help others. It is very appropriate to donate it to
those in need. In doing so you perform the Mitzvah of Tzedakah, and you
honor your loved one’s memory by making a donation in their name. Jewish
tradition views charity as the strongest force in the universe . . . even greater
than death.
The Mercy INN, a soup kitchen in Wyandanch, will gladly accept donations of excess food.
Charlie Cicio, volunteer food coordinator of the Mercy Inn, will arrange pick up of food dona-
tions. His phone number is (631)455-8989. The number of the Mercy Inn is (631)643-5117.
Thank you and please pass this information on when appropriate.

the sanctuary, each person must bring gifts according to his or her talents and ability.
I am inviting you to join the Rabbi’s Circle.

two tickets to all fundraisers and two tickets for dinner at the annual golf outing.
If the Rabbi’s Circle doesn’t work for you this year please join us at one of these levels, all of which include ongoing recognition in
the Arc and the website and 2 tickets to dinner for the Golf outing and invitations to some
