When you are part of a school community like Queen
Elizabeth, you know you are a part of a tradition that
goes back to 1938. You are a part of a strong School
Council who works collaboratively with administration
to enrich indoor and outdoor learning environments.
You connect with parents and guardians, ensuring
there is a solid, supportive partnership. You are part
of an excellent team of educators who care for the
whole child, nurturing passion and curiosity while
building skills that will foster everyone’s growth. You
are a part of children’s lives, who make you smile everyday and ground you in your work.
It is for these reasons I thank Queen Elizabeth for my time here as principal. I am forever grateful for
every memory; you have taught me much. In September I will be the principal at Buckhorn Public
School and Drew Beaton will be Queen Elizabeth’s new principal. Drew is currently the principal at
Highland Heights.
Each person who comes to Queen Elizabeth leaves an ever-lasting impact. We are lucky to have had
these staff as part the Queen Elizabeth family as they pursue other opportunities. Ben Kirkwood is
going to Queen Mary, Rachel Hensen is going to Buckhorn, Mark Paton is moving to Prince of Whales,
Wayne Ihamaki is headed to Thomas A Stewart and Brikena Pazari is promoted to Vice Principal at
Edminson Heights. Best of luck to all.
June will be a month of change towards a positive September start.

King Elizabeth, Wayne Ihamaki
Wayne Ihmaki is leaving his beloved Queen Elizabeth after ten years as her head custodian.
Referred to in the community as King Elizabeth, Wayne started his career in Havelock, and worked at
Crestwood, North Shore, Cavan, Millbrook, Highland Heights and Adam Scott prior to coming to Queen
Elizabeth.
Wayne always interacted with children by name, often taking under wing students who were shoveling
snow or raking leaves as part of their learning. He always had words of advice and kindness to share.
Wayne’s wife says that he, “treats that school as his baby,” and anyone who has walked the halls of QE
knows this to be true. Wayne does so much more than keep the halls shining; he is instrumental in
“getting things done.” With Wayne at my side, we have tackled the refresh of QE starting with the roof
and making our way to the basement tunnels. This has included new roof, paint (inside and out),
corkboards, windows, fencing, raised garden beds, signage and removal and cleanup of lots of broken or
outdated materials. We have also grown QE’s teaching spaces. With the help of Wayne and School
Council our courtyard now hosts raised vegetable gardens and the beginnings of a naturalization space.
Queen Elizabeth wishes Wayne all the best as he looks to new adventures. His work and contributions
will continue to live on in the halls and playgrounds of Queen Elizabeth.
Thank you, Wayne the King of Queen Elizabeth.Queen Elizabeth

In June we celebrate the KPR Character Education Trait of Perseverance. To persevere means:
• I finish what I started even when it is difficult
• I do not give up when faced with challenges or obstacles
• I complete all tasks and assignments to the best of my ability
Since February we have been recognizing the Seven Grandfather
Teachings as they relate to the character education traits.
To cherish knowledge is to know WISDOM.
To know LOVE is to know peace.
To honor all the creation is to have RESPECT.
To face life with courage is to know BRAVERY.
To walk through life with integrity is to know HONESTY.
HUMILITY is to know yourself as a sacred part of creation.
TRUTH is to know all of these things.

Walk to School
“Walking to school is great physical exercise. It wakes kids up. It
helps them concentrate once they’re in class.” Many teachers report
that kids who walk to school are more alert and ready to learn than
those who arrive by car– and you won’t have to hunt for a parking
space when you arrive!
During our community walk, students “build their social skills along
the route, become street smart, gain self-confidence and a sense of responsibility, and become more
independent,” says Guy Faulkner, a professor of health and exercise psychology at the University of
Toronto (excerpt from The Toronto Star, 2016/04/10).Queen Elizabeth

Keys to Happier Living
Western neuroscience (the science of the brain) has now
confirmed what Eastern wisdom has known for a long time:
happiness is a skill we can learn.
Research shows that happiness, compassion and kindness
are the products of skills that can be learned and enhanced
through training, thanks to the neuroplasticity of our
brains.
Every month we will present you with a challenging action to
take to increase your happiness.
Yes, you can help peers. Be there, listen and support.

Essential Skills for Reading Comprehension – understood.org
Reading comprehension can be challenging for kids for lots of reasons.
Whatever the cause, knowing the skills involved, and which ones your
child struggles with, can help you get the right support.
Here is an essential skill needed for reading comprehension, and tips on
what can help kids improve this skill.
Making Inferences
In order to make inferences about something that is not explicitly stated
in the text, students must learn to draw on prior knowledge and
recognize clues in the text itself.
Visualizing
Studies have shown that students who visualize while reading have better recall than those who do not
(Pressley, 1977). Readers can take advantage of illustrations that are embedded in the text or create their
own mental images or drawings when reading text without illustrations.
