RECYCLING SERVICE Tasman's - Tasman District Council
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Please put your rubbish and recycling out by 7.00 am
AM
As long as you’ve put your collections out by 7.00 am, you’ll never miss your collection.

     Bin placement
Place bins at least half-a-metre away from other objects, close to the kerb with your rubbish
bags and crates, and on the left hand side so they are not missed by the collector. This
gives the truck’s mechanical arm the room it needs to pick up the bin. If you have trouble
measuring, use the bin width as a spacer. Make sure lids are closed and the front of the bin
faces the road (wheels are at the back).

Place your rubbish and recycling in a visible location so our driver can see it. If you are in a
cul-de-sac please group your bins together with your neighbours. Our drivers may ask you to
place your bins in a central location. This makes it faster and safer to provide service to you.

If possible, place away from cars,
     overhanging trees or other hazards.

If you have any questions about your bins, collections, or
fortnightly schedules, please call the Council: 03 543 8400

WHAT GOES IN YOUR BLUE CRATE?

                                                      GLASS
Please don’t overfill your bin as bottles may fall and break.
Only recycle empty, unbroken glass bottles and jars (clear, brown, blue and green).
No windows, glass bakeware, or mirror glass as they can’t be recycled. Maximum weight 12kg.
If you need a second crate, contact your local Council office.

             WHAT GOES IN YOUR BAGS?

                                   LANDFILL
If it can’t be recycled, reused or composted it needs to go in the landfill.
If you want to reduce what goes to landfill, you can recycle more,
and compost your food and garden waste.
The Council offers a $20 discount on compost bins and e-waste disposal at
participating retailers (search ‘composting e-waste’ at www.tasman.govt.nz).
Please keep the bags no heavier than 12kg and remember to wrap sharp
objects like broken glass. No flammable or dangerous materials please.

                                                                                              5

? WHY DO WE HAVE TO KEEP THE GLASS SEPARATE

AND NOT JUST PUT IT IN THE NEW RECYCLING BIN?
We need to keep the glass separate so we can sort it into separate colours and send it to
Auckland to make new bottles. If it was in the main bin it would make it very difficult to recycle.

? IF I SELL MY HOUSE, CAN I TAKE MY RECYCLING BIN AND BLUE CRATE WITH ME?
No, the recycling bin and the blue crate are allocated to the property and must stay with
the property for the new owners or tenants to use. If you’re moving to another house in the
Tasman District, a recycling bin and crate should be waiting for you there.

? WHAT HAPPENS IF MY RECYCLING BIN OR CRATE IS DAMAGED OR STOLEN?
If your recycling bin is stolen, please inform the Council. Each bin has a unique ID number
that can be scanned to identify it if we find it at another location. Damaged or stolen
recycling bins and crates are normally replaced at your cost. Please contact the Council to
    arrange a replacement bin.

? I PUT MY RECYCLING BIN OUT FOR COLLECTION AT THE CORRECT TIME THIS
MORNING BUT MY BIN HAS NOT BEEN EMPTIED. WHY?
There are a number of reasons why your bin was not emptied. You may have items that
cannot be recycled in your bin. In this case, the contractor will attach a sticker to the top
of your bin to highlight these items. The placement of your bin may have been an issue for
the contractor to lift it safely with the truck’s mechanical arm. There may be times when
our contractor cannot access your street and that means your bin cannot be emptied. If this
happens just give the Council a call. Please make sure that you place your recycling bin close
to the kerb, away from other objects, and away from cars parked in the street.

? WHY CAN’T I PUT SOFT PLASTICS IN MY RECYCLING BIN?
Plastic bags and soft plastics can get caught in our recycling equipment and jam it. Soft plastics
can be recycled at a number of supermarkets around the Tasman District – Pak’n’Save, New
    World and Countdown.

? WHY DOES MY RECYCLING NEED TO BE CLEAN?
Clean recycling is much easier to recycle and means our contractor can get a better return on
    recycling for you.
