Background
Language Technology (LT) at the University of Gothenburg (GU) has a long history both
nationally and internationally. Its success is based on Språkbanken, started more than 40
years ago, and the first Swedish education programme in computational linguistics, started
in 1984. The research community at GU is the largest LT research group in Scandinavia and
one of the largest in Europe. Nowadays, the research is spread over (at least) four
departments in two faculties; at the Faculty of Humanities: the Language Bank
(Språkbanken Text) at the Department of Swedish, the Centre for Linguistic Theory and
Studies in Probability (CLASP) at the Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of
Science (FLoV), and the Centre for Digital Humanities; at the IT Faculty and Chalmers
Institute of Technology: the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE).
LT research in other departments is primarily done in cooperation with researchers in one or
more of these departments.
There are advantages of having the LT research in different departments, because it opens
up the possibility of cross-disciplinary research. But there are also disadvantages – in
particular, there is a risk of fragmentation. In 2009, the university recognised this and
funded Centre for Language Technology (CLT) as a cross-disciplinary “centrumbildning” at
GU. CLT was funded by GU as one of five areas of strength for 6 years between 2010 and
2015. The funding included postdocs, administration, a steering group, travelling, a yearly
internal conference/retreat, and seminar series. The seminar series was crucial in enabling
cross-departmental coordination and cooperation, and for maintaining a sense of a cohesive
LT research community in Gothenburg. After 6 years the funding ceased, which had an
immediate negative and lasting effect on research coordination, cross-departmental
cooperation, and cross-departmental seminar attendance. In recent years, the annual CLT
retreat has been revived, which has had some positive effects, including increased
interaction, leading to (among other things) the first version of this application last year.
Although the departemental LT groups have some limited resources to organise individual
seminars related to their research projects, there is currently no funding to organise general
LT seminars that would foster interaction across the groups in the sense this was done
during the funding years of CLT. Reviving the CLT seminars will have an important effect on
the collaboration between the departments, and with other research groups nationally and
internationally. In addition, they will be a welcome addition to the education at GU, in
particular the master programmes (Master in Language Technology MLT at FLoV, Master in
Digital Humanities DH at the department of Literature, History of Ideas and Religion, and
Applied Data Science (ADS) at CSE) and two 3rd cycle doctoral programmes (Natural
Language Processing at Department of Swedish and Computational Linguistics at FLoV).
The seminars will be open to everyone, and students will be encouraged to attend the
seminars.
Application
From the Faculty of Humanities, we apply for a partial funding of the CLT seminar series to
cover the costs of inviting external visitors, in total 111 720 kr for the year 2021. In addition
to this, we will apply for funding from CHAIR (Chalmers AI Research Centre) and when the
seminars will be part of the 2nd and 3rd cycle courses to AI Competence (ai-competence.se).
Språkbanken Text/Svenska and CLASP/FLoV have also agreed to cover administrative costs
of seminar organisation, and CLASP has offered to cover the costs of some invited speakers
in the form of shared CLASP/CLT seminars.
Budget
We calculate that the seminar series will be running once every week during each semester,
which means around 30-35 weeks per year (4.5 months per semester, 2-4 seminars per
month). Of these 30-35 seminars, CLASP will cover the costs of 5 invited speakers. In this
application we would like to apply for 8 external speakers.
For the external visitors we need to cover travel expenses (including external representation
costs according to the GU rules) and two nights of accommodation for Scandinavian and
European visitors and four nights of accommodation for non-European visitors. Of the 8
external visitors (see table below), we estimate 4 of them to come from Scandinavia, 3 from
Europe and 1 from outside of Europe. We use the following cost estimates:
● Accommodation: 1000 kr per night, hence 2000 kr for two nights (and 4000 kr for 4
nights for non-European visitors)
● Travel within Scandinavia: 2000 kr, return ticket
● Travel within Europe: 5000 kr, return ticket
● Travel from outside Europe: 10000 kr, return ticket
● External representation: guest + GU-participant: 1600 kr/day
In addition to this, the department of Swedish which will be managing the grant, adds 40%
indirect costs, which gives the following yearly budget:
Scandinavian visitors, 4 × (2000 + 2000) kr 16 000 kr
European visitors, 3 × (2000 + 5000) kr 21 000 kr
Non-European visitors, 1 × (4000 + 10000) kr 14 000 kr

Saved funding from 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic and the situation that arose during Spring of 2020 made seminar
guests we have planned or scheduled for 2020 to postpone their visits due to mandatory
traveling restrictions or give the seminar over Zoom (for a list of external seminars please see
below) which incurred no costs. This means that we have saved 80 000 kr that we were
awarded in this call last year in its entirety. We propose to carry over this funding to the
budget for the current year and use it together with the funding applied in this application
once circumstances permit.

Co-financing
The administrative costs that Språkbanken Text/Svenska and CLASP/FLoV have agreed to
cover include 5% and 2% of full-time respectively for one senior faculty member per
department for the operational planning of the seminars (and in a close cooperation with the
programme committee of the representatives from each department) that would be on the
lookout for suggestions on guests, as well as administration for handling travel bookings.
Furthermore, we are in discussions with CHAIR for funding the costs for the CSE
department.

Ansökan om medel för det fakultetsgemensamma Tidigmoderna
seminariets verksamhet år 2021
Bakgrund
Tidigmoderna seminariet har sedan 2007 fungerat som en tvärvetenskaplig mötesplats och
fakultetsgemensam verksamhet vid Humanistiska fakulteten för forskare som studerar material
och ämnen från tiden mellan ca 1500–1800. Eftersom den största delen av den pågående
forskningen vid flera av fakultetens institutioner tenderar att behandla modernare tider, utgör
seminariet en möjlighet att hålla forskning om äldre tider levande, samt att väcka intresse hos
studenter och yngre forskare att ta sig an historiska ämnen. Seminariet drivs, under ledning av
en samordnare tillsammans med en arbetsgrupp med forskare från olika ämnestillhörigheter
och institutioner på fakulteten.
Tidigmoderna seminariet har under årens lopp anordnat läsecirklar,
seminarieserier, workshops och internationella konferenser. Inriktning och teman utgörs av de
förslag som kommit in till gruppen, samt arbetsgruppens egna initiativ. En övergripande
ambition och riktlinje är att seminariet ska vara en angelägenhet för hela fakulteten. Det
tvärvetenskapliga anslaget är genomgående. För exempel på programverksamheten de senaste
två åren se bifogade dokument (bilaga 1 och 2).
Flera arrangemang har resulterat i publikationer. Nämnas kan att bidrag från den
internationella konferensen 2–4 november 2017, Early Modern Satire. Themes, Re-evaluations,

Cecilia Rosengren, Per Sivefors, Rikard Wingård). Bidrag från den internationella konferensen
Faking it. Forgery and Fabrication in Late Medieval and Early Modern Culture, 15–17 augusti
2019, kommer att publiceras i ett temanummer av Konsthistorisk tidskrift (red. Alexandra
Herlitz, Alexandra Fried) samt en antologi på ett internationellt förlag (red. Philip Lavender,
Matilda Amundsen Bergström har skrivit en book proposal som just nu bedöms av Brill). För
båda dessa konferenser erhölls generösa bidrag externt (Riksbankens jubileumsfond och
Wenner-Gren Stiftelserna). En workshop i januari 2020 om “Receptionen av antikens kvinnliga
bifigurer”, kommer att resultera i ett temanummer av tidskriften Aiolos.
Hösten 2021 planeras en ny internationell konferens, på temat Hamlet i
Norden: Hamlet and the North. Origins, Exchanges and Appropriations. Ett cfp har skickats ut
i augusti, och tre internationella (och en lokal) keynotes har bekräftats.
Ansökan om stöd för verksamhet 2021
I enlighet med Riktlinjer för ekonomiskt stöd till fakultetsgemensam seminarieverksamhet vid
Humanistiska fakulteten (Dnr E 2018/768) ansöker Tidigmoderna seminariet om medel för
verksamhet 2021.
Hur kommer medlen fakulteten till gagn i form av seminarier, workshops eller
föreläsningar?
Programmet för 2021 är ännu inte helt fastställt. Seminariet planerar just nu följande
aktiviteter:
En ”tidigmodern dag” riktad till fakultetens studenter på grund- och avancerad nivå
planeras för tidig vårterminen 2021. Målet med en sådan dag är att uppmuntra
studenter att skriva uppsatser om den tidigmoderna perioden, genom att introducera
forskning som finns samt intressanta resurser och material. (Dagen skulle
ursprungligen ha hållits under höstterminen 2020, men måste uppskjutas pga COVID-
19. Vi ansöker inte om ytterligare medel till detta evenemang, utan använder medel
som vi fick in 2020.)
2 (5) Seminarier (Vårtermin 2021). Vi har bjudit in olika föreläsare som kommer att hålla
föredrag under vårterminen 2021. Programmet är inte helt fastställt, men för
närvarande har vi två som har tackat ja till inbjudan: Perry McPartland (Universitetet i
Agder, Norge) som kommer att presentera sitt arbete om metadrama i Shakespeare och
Elisabeth Lutteman (Uppsala universitet), som kommer att hålla ett föredrag om musik
och dans i den elisabetanska teatern. Vi inväntar svar från andra möjliga föreläsare.
Föreläsning/seminarserie (Hösttermin 2021) Detta rör aktiviteter kopplade till
Hamletkonferensen. Vi kommer att, i september och oktober 2021, planera en
seminarserie riktad mot studenter och forskare under vilken vi tar upp ett antal teman
som är relevanta för konferensen, samt läser texter relaterade till Hamlet och
Shakespeares teater. Fem externa föreläsare kommer att bli inbjudna till att delta i och
bidra till denna seminarserie.
Konferens: Hamlet and the North. Origins, Exchanges and Appropriations, som
arrangeras i samarbete med Nordic Shakespeare Society, är den första att utforska de
specifika nordiska kopplingarna till Hamlet. Göteborg var platsen för den första
dokumenterade uppsättningen av Hamlet i Skandinavien (1787), vilket gör Göteborgs
universitet till en särskilt lämplig plats för ett evenemang som granskar de historiska
kopplingar mellan Hamlet och Norden. Konferensen kommer att äga rum den 12-14
november 2021. Keynotes som har bekräftat sitt deltagande är Michael Dobson
(Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham), Nely Keinänen (Helsingfors
universitet), Philip Lavender (Göteborgs universitet) och Richard Wilson (emeritus,
Kingston University). Vi kommer dessutom att söka externa medel till denna
konferens.
Omfattar verksamheten minst två institutioner?
Ja. Arbetsgruppen 2020 består av Philip Lavender (LIR, samordnare), Paul Borenberg (HIST),
Alexandra Fried (KUV), Alexandra Herlitz (KUV), Britt-Marie Karlsson (SPL), Cecilia
Rosengren (LIR), Rikard Wingård (LIR), Per Sivefors (Linnéuniversitetet) och Matilda
Amundsen Bergström (Köpenhamns Universitet). Konstellationen kommer eventuellt att
ändras 2021, men ambitionen är att så många institutioner från fakulteten som möjligt är
3 (5)representerade i arbetsgruppen. För att seminariets verksamhet ska kunna fullföljas krävs en
samordnare som får ersättning för sitt arbete. Arbetsgruppens övriga deltagare ersätts inte.
Vad är det vetenskapliga värdet med aktiviteten för fakultetens institutioner?
Eftersom den största delen av den pågående forskningen vid flera av fakultetens institutioner
tenderar att behandla modernare tider, utgör seminariet en möjlighet att hålla forskning om
äldre tider levande, samt att väcka intresse hos studenter och yngre forskare att ta sig an
historiska ämnen. Genom Tidigmoderna seminariet knyts också forskare från olika delar av
Sverige samman, nätverk bildas och framtida forskningsprojekt och publikationer möjliggörs.
Vilka mervärdesaspekter såsom samverkan och nytta för utbildning på grund och
avancerad nivå finns?
Se ovan. Tidigmoderna seminariet skulle kunna utnyttjas mer inom utbildning, inte minst
erfarenheten att studera äldre material, hitta i arkiv, visa på den äldre historiens fortsatta
relevans. I det syftet planerar vi att hålla en ”tidigmodern dag” riktad till studenter som ska
skriva uppsats, för att intressera dem för den tidigmoderna perioden.
Sökta externa medel
Inför varje större evenemang har seminariet sökt medel externt och beviljats. För inbjudna
gäster och mindre seminarier har fakultetens (dvs fram till nu, institutionernas) bidrag använts.
