THREE STATE CHAMPIONS
CROWNED AT BARTERCARD SAIL
PARADISE 2018
Southport Yacht Club hosted the ninth annual Bartercard
Sail Paradise from Saturday 6th – Tuesday 9th January 2018.
Following from the Club Marine Pittwater to Paradise Yacht
Race held on Tuesday 2nd. 42 entrants competed in perfect
Gold Coast weather offshore the coasts beautiful beaches.
Four days of high pressure and tactical racing, crowned
three Queensland state championships; IRC Yachting,
Sports Boats and Australian Measurement System.
Intense racing was contested on the fourth and final
day of Bartercard Sail Paradise. Both David Lambourne’s
Lambourdini and Fred Bestall’s Auric’s Quest were
pushed over the start line by fellow competitors forcing
them to return and start again. With a state championship
on the line getting a good start was imperative. Ray Haslar’s
RIKKI showed outstanding tactics and skill crossing the start
line first and rounding the top mark in front, continuing to
win line honours.
Bradley Ginnivan on BEACH BALL sailed to perfection with
an almost perfect series score, taking out the crown as the
2018 Queensland Yachting Championship.
Performance Racing one was just as tight at the beginning
of race one, with multiple boats inches away crossing the
start line as they head towards the top mark. The top four
places were closely fought out by local Gold Coast boats.
Glenn Burrell on WILDFLOWER 2 won the division followed
closely behind by Brian Atchison on ENVY.
Graham Sherring’s RETUNED took out the double,
winning both the 2018 Australian Sports Boat Queensland
Championships and the 2018 Queensland AMS Championships.
The boat was unstoppable by winning every race within the
series. Day three saw some tight competition for RETUNED
with Chris Noyes on FASTWAY COURIERS taking the lead on
the start line and leading the Division to the top mark.
Four days also showcased a number of inhouse events,
including the skippers and sponsors welcome party on
the Waterscape Pontoon Bar, Gill Fashion Parade, XXXX
promotions, daily live entertainment and presentations
plus much more.
“It has been an amazing start to the year with three major
sailing events happening on the Gold Coast shoreline.
The sailing standards have been remarkable, and we look
forward to the skippers and their crew joining us back
in 2019 for the 10th Anniversary of SYC’s Bartercard Sail
Paradise,” said Vice Commodore Sail, Ray McMahon.

Australia Day
Celebrating all things Australian, SYC celebrated Australia
Day with an Aussie BBQ on the Waterscape Pontoon Bar,
Aussie games including thong throwing, tug-o-war and
many more. Meat tray raffles were also held raising money
for Youth Sailing. A big thank you to our fantastic MC Vice
Commodore Sail Ray McMahon, all the members and guests
who joined SYC for the annual festivities.

Our Christmas get together last December, which was
held in the Compass Room for the first time, was a most President SYC Golf
enjoyable evening where the thirty-two in attendance
enjoyed fine food, fine wine and fine company.
Commodore Kerry Noyes was in attendance to present the
“Commodores Trophy” to the 2017 winner. This trophy is
presented to the player with the highest aggregate of his
or her best six games played during the year. Going into the
last game of 2017 we had no idea who the winner would
be. It all hinged on the results at “Palmer Colonial”. There
were half a dozen contenders an a very surprised Peter
Whitehead emerged the winner. What a player!
Attendances were steady in 2017 with an average of
twenty-two players attending the ten games we played.
Terry Stephenson was re elected President and Paul Valle
was re elected Captain.
Fixtures for 2018 include a couple of different courses
which should make the year even more interesting.
They include: 12th February Surfers Paradise, 12th March
Arundel Hills, 16th April Southport, 14th May Ocean Shores,
11th June Robina Woods, 9th July Gainsborough Greens,
13th August Palm Meadows, 10th September Windaroo, 8th
October Emerald Lakes, 12th November Murwillumbah, 3rd
December Colonial.

would have had to have sailed the S4 into Bass Strait and during

just over 10 kn for 12 hours over the night of 28/29 Dec.
Overall IRC winner Ichi Ban (1.395) TCF 2:12:13:31 (~ 60 hrs) – to

spends millions on their campaign. They had put a new hull on
their TP52. Most of the crew were professional sailors. Half the
crew were expert helmsmen and trimmers. Driving through the
night in 20 – 30 kn of northerly they blew out two brand new
spinnakers and crashed multiple times. Quest TP52 wiped out
with the helmsman breaking the carbon fibre wheel with his chest
and putting six crew in the water. Probably not appropriate for
our standard. ORCI Another Painkiller finished 45th.
Polars: I had the polars set on 85% for optimal routing. We seemed
to be ahead of these much of the time, but bizarrely with some
unexpected setbacks such as the occasional becalming or granny
gybe or misfortune, that is pretty much what we sailed to.
Consequently, if we could sail to 100% of our polars we would
have come close to winning our division on handicap.
Sails: We got to see many of the sails for the first time. A good
investment would be to gather some quantitative data on each of
the sails and then update the sail plan and polars.
Both the Jib Tops were excellent.
JT1 Med/Heavy – old sail, no battens, sheets around the spreaders.
Is there some way to sheet inside the shrouds? Just need one car

9 – 11kn TWS
Spinnakers held up well. We would have tried the stay sail but
were using the topping lift as a halyard.
Code 0 was excellent. Rolled in is a good option to get going in
drifter conditions then roll out and sail at AWA 40 - 50 to get the
boat going
Sat phone: Would be good to have this set up properly. Excellent
back up and only way to get weather if distant from shore mobile
reception. Working with Predict Wind offshore on Rod’s iPad, but
needs to be integrated to Expedition.
Logistics: Food was great. Call out to Carolyn for an excellent
effort preparing the food and spending quite a lot of time below
decks preparing the meals. Probably need someone to be
responsible for double checking all aspects as there was a bit of
an issue with water which Carolyn had expected had been filled
up. Great idea having water bottles as well and keeping some as
