the ARCHANGEL
CATHOLIC CHURCH
FEBRUARY 14, 2021 | SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish,
you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand,
touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” Mark 1:40-41

M I C H A E L T H E AR C H AN G E L CATH OLIC CH U RCH Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family, As you read my letter to you today, perhaps you attended Mass this weekend at the parish and are asking yourselves this question: “What will my Lenten sacrifice be this year?” It is an age-old tradition that many Catholics look deep within to reflect upon how they can enter more deeply into the holy and penitential season of Lent. One way is certainly to abstain from something during Lent. Another is to take-on a new practice or ritual during Lent. In either case, both opportunities allow us to grow closer to Christ if we allow Him to be the holiness that we seek in the “doing.” I humbly suggest that it should be our prayer and posture to embody Jesus Christ who has purchased for us, the rewards of eternal life. This is never more real than when we journey with Him into the desert of Lent—asking Him to change our hearts, remove ever y stain of sin, draw us closer to His heart, mold us into a people who long to see Your face. I am honored to welcome into our community of faith David and Lana Jezierski and their family. Many of you know Lana who is our Coordinator of Children’s Faith Formation here at St. Michael the Archangel. David, her husband, has been studying for the permanent diaconate for our archdiocese for the last five years. I first met this family as their pastor at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Parish in Katy. Recently, David and his family were given permission to formally register in our parish and continue formation as a candidate from St. Michael the Archangel Parish. Since I am the priest who recommended David for the permanent diaconate some 7 years ago, I know he and Lana ver y well. I am thrilled and honored that they have chosen to make our parish, their parish too. You will learn more about he and his family as you read his letter to all of us in today’s bulletin. David and Lana, you are most welcomed to St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Here, I pray that you have found a home to both ser ve and be ser ved by. Finally, soon you will be hearing Fr. Leon and myself invite each of us to pray and participate in our Annual Diocesan Ser vices Fund, 2021. This year, our theme is: “Walk in the Light of Christ.” Perhaps this theme is also fodder for us as we begin the season of Lent. Our goal this year is $405,000.00. Since my arrival as pastor in 2016, our goal has not increased, it has remained the same. I ask that ever y registered family consider making a pledge and praying for the success of our local church in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. May God Bless You, One and All! Fr. Wayne W. Today, Cardinal DiNardo invites every Catholic in our Archdiocese to Walk in the Light of Christ
and help our ministries teach, evangelize, and worship. Last year, 711 donors from St. Michael the
Archangel helped us raise $526,319.00. Those donations provided support to more than 60
ministries that serve thousands of our brothers and sisters. We ask that you pray about your gift
to the Diocesan Services Fund. Your gift truly makes a difference to so many in our community.

For the safety of our parishioners during the
pandemic, and per the request from the Vatican,
the following is the procedure for receiving ashes:
After blessing the ashes and sprinkling them with
holy water in silence, the priest addresses those
present: “Repent, and believe in the Gospel” or
“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you
shall return”. Then the priest cleanses his hands,
puts on a face mask, and distributes the ashes by
sprinkling on each person’s head in silence.

LENTEN PRACTICES
Almsgiving has always been an important part of Lent. It is important to give ourselves the experience of
fasting from being un-generous. Generosity is not simply giving my excess clothes to a place where poor
people might purchase them. It's not even writing a "generous" check at the time a collection is taken up
for a cause that benefits the poor. Generosity is an attitude. It is a sense that no matter how much I have,
all that I have is a gift, and given to me to be shared. It means that sharing with others in need is one of
my personal priorities. A spirit of self-less giving means that one of my needs is to share what I have with
others. Lent is a wonderful time to practice self-less giving, because it takes practice. This kind of self-
sacrificing generosity is a religious experience. It places us in solidarity with the poor who share with each
other, without having any excess. It also joins us with Jesus, who gave himself completely, for us.
Establishing new patterns of giving will give real life and joy to Lent.
Penance is a remedy, a medicine, a spiritual therapy for the healing I desire. The Lord always forgives us.
But complete healing takes time. With serious sin or with bad habits we've invested years in forming, we
need to develop a therapeutic care plan to let the healing happen. To say "I'm sorry" or to simply make
a "resolution" to change a long established pattern, will have the same bad result as wishing a sprained
ankle would heal, while still walking on it. Lent is a wonderful time to name what sinful, unhealthy,
self-centered patterns need changing and to act against them by coming up with a strategy. For example,
if the Lord is shining a light into the darkness of a bad pattern in my life, I can choose to "stop doing it."
But, I have to work on a "change of heart" and to look concretely at what circumstances, attitudes, and
other behaviors contribute to the pattern. Lasting healing needs the practice of penance.
Fasting is going without food. Its purpose is to experience the effects of not eating. It also serves to be a
penance or a sacrifice for the purpose of strengthening us. When we don't eat, for even a little while, we
get hungry. When we get hungry, we have a heightened sense of awareness. If, when we eat too much,
we have a sluggish feeling, when we fast, we have a feeling of alertness. Fasting is a wonderful exercise
whenever we want to sincerely ask for an important grace from God. It is not that our fasting "earns"
God's attention, but by fasting, we clarify our thinking and our feeling. It is purifying and prepares us to
pray more deeply. Catholics are required to fast on only two days of the year - Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday. On these days, fasting means something very specific and limited. It means that one eats only one
full meal in a day, with no food in-between meals. It is understood that two other meals, if one eats three
meals a day, should not total one full meal. One might fast in a more complete way, i.e., eating only a
portion of a single meal.
To abstain is to not eat meat. Its purpose is to be an act of penance – an act of sacrifice – that helps us
grow in freedom to make much bigger sacrifices. Of course, it would not make sense to make the sacrifice
of not eating meat, and then eat a wonderful meal I might enjoy even more. Many people eat a vegetari-
an diet for a variety of reasons, and eating meat is not even an issue. It might be possible to abstain from
a non-meal that I really like, on all the Fridays of Lent. It should be noted that many people in this world
cannot afford to eat meat or do not have access to it. Part of our abstaining from meat can place us in
solidarity with so many of our sisters and brothers around the world.
Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits (14 to 60 years of age) include the
physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also ex-
cluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should
not further jeopardize their health by fasting. Let us pray for each other on this Lenten journey, especially
those who need and desire a change of heart on this pilgrimage to Easter joy!
