What is LCA?
The Leaving Cert Applied is an
alternative way of attaining the
Leaving Cert.
Grades are achieved through the
completion of assignments in class,
attendance and exams.
It is not an easy way out, you have
to work very hard!Why choose LCA?
If you find sitting exams difficult.
If you have a good attendance
record.
If you want to get experience in the
workforce.
If you want to do as well as you can
in the Leaving Cert but find study
difficult.
If you would like a more varied
school day including more practicalHow is LCA different?
Smaller class size, 20 maximum.
Different subjects.
Attendance is part of final grade.
(90%)
Continual Assessment (60% - 40%)
Everyday use of IT.
Class trips & special projects.

first and then go to college.

Points are calculated by giving a set number of points for each
grade and then adding the six best subjects to get the points total.
Students achieving H6 or above in Honours Maths will be awarded
25 bonus points.

UCD/Maynooth/UCC/UCG: Require Irish, English
& a third language except for engineering,
science or nursing courses. Maynooth have
recently dropped the 3rd language requirement
also for Business, Accounting, Finance & Law
degrees
TCD requires students to pass English, Maths
and a second language e.g.
French/German/Irish/Spanish/Polish
DCU/TU Dublin/ITs: English or Irish and usually
MathsKey Questions for Student/Parents
Should I study Higher Maths?
A new syllabus was recently introduced which
rewards students with 25 bonus points if they
achieve 40% or higher. Students with a Junior
Cert grade A or B at higher level are encouraged
to take LC Hons Maths.
Ideally students should have achieved at least a
honours grade B in the JC if they intend taking
Hons Maths.
Certain courses require a H4 in Honours Maths
e.g. Honours Engineering at UCD/TCD.Key Questions for Students/Parents
If I study Ordinary Level Maths in
the Junior Cert, what subjects
should I probably avoid?
Physics, Chemistry and Accounting. They
require a high level of mathematical
