Senioritis

Senioritis describes the decrease in motivation in the senior’s studies as they are coming closer to the end of their high school careers.
Senioritis is likely to do more harm than good. The main symptom of senioritis is procrastination. Other symptoms include; lack of motivation,
drop in grades, and another act called “coasting” which means going through classes with little or no concentration and also tardiness in the
students. If you stay focused and buckle down, your opportunities to strengthen your skills and your experiences in college will be greater, and
the students will be more likely to succeed. Another way to avoid senioritis is to stay involved in activities, sports and volunteer work all through
high school. What do colleges expect? They expect students to maintain levels of academics. They see a midyear grade report and a final year
ended transcript so there is no excuses for senior’s to be slacking off the last few months of high school.
I interviewed Sara Goembel and Samantha Steensma about senioritis. First asking, “Are you experiencing senioritis?” Sara’s response, “Yes
I am, I practically have been since 8th grade.” Sam’s response, “Yes I am experiencing senioritis because I don’t have any hard classes that stress
me out.” Next asking, “What do you do to try to avoid it?” Sara said, “Not having daydreams about finally leaving high school.” Sam said, “Make
sure you stay busy and attend school events like; games, dances, etc.” Last asking, “What are some ‘words of wisdom’ for the upcoming seniors?”
Sara answered, “Don’t slack off during your junior year it will make senioritis worse because you will be saying, “It’s so slack I don’t even need to
be here”. “Keeping up with your activities will really help,” Sam answered. “The more slack your classes are the chances of being bored are higher,
so don’t be afraid to take the more ‘difficult’ classes, and make the most of your senior year because you won’t get it back.”
Superbowl XLVI

Everyone knows that the Superbowl is one of the most important football games of the season. On
February 5th, the New York Giants played the New England Patriots for Superbowl XLVI. The National an-
them was sung by Kelly Clarkson. The game started with the coin toss, which was won by the Patriots. They
decided to kick-off first. At the end of the first quarter, the Giants were up 9-0. Cruz had 2-yard touchdown
reception from Manning, and Tynes’ kick was good. In the second quarter, the Patriots came back with a 29-
yard field goal by Gostkowski putting New England on the board with 3 points. Continuing in the second
quarter, Woodhead cought got a 4-yard touchdown reception from Tom Brady, and Gostkowski’s kick was
good. Finishing up the first half, New England was up 10-9.
The half time show consisted of Madonna, LMFAO, M.I.A., Nicki Minaj, and Cee Lo Green. Not many
people were as excited to watch the half time show this year, as they were in the past years. People like
watching the more popular singers and groups perform because they will more than likely know the songs. Even though some of the popular
singers were included with Madonna, not many people knew the songs she sang.
The Patriots started off the third quarter strong, and prevented the Giants from scoring. Hernandez got 12-yard touchdown reception
from Tom Brady, and Gostkowski’s kick was good. Putting the Patriots winning 17-9. The Giants were not going to give up, and came back with
Tynes getting a 38-yard field goal putting the New York on the board with 12 points. With about 30 seconds left in the third quarter, Tynes made
a 33-yard field goal. To finish up the third quarter, the Patriots were still up 17-15. The fourth quarter wasn’t as entertaining as the first three
quarters. It came down to less than a minute left, and the Giants gave it to Bradshaw, giving the Giants a 6-yard touchdown run, and tried to run
the ball, but the 2-point run failed, giving the Giants the win over the Patriots, 21-17. Overall, it turned out being a good game, but there were
many upset Patriots fans.
What is SOPA?

What is SOPA? SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act. It is the bill in the United States that tries to allow the U.S. law enforcement to stop
online trafficking. This would give the U.S. the ability to block advertising networks from certain websites, and search engines from linking to
other sites.
With this new bill they could expand their laws so that illegal streaming of copyrighted material could penalize a person with a maximum
of five years in prison. This could mean that downloading music illegally (like most people do), could end up with you getting in a lot of trouble.
The goals of the bill were to stop the illegal use of copyrighted material and to protect the U.S. from counterfeit drugs.
This bill could take away peoples freedom of speech and would violate the First Amendment. This would make a lot of people mad. Presi-
dent Obama said that he would not stand for taking away peoples freedom of expression.
On January 18, 2012, there was the largest online protest in U.S. history. There were over 7,000 internet websites that planned a twelve
hour block out of their internet website. The big websites that were part of this blackout included Google and Wikipedia. This changed the gov-
ernments mind on the bill in a fast way. Only two days later on January 20, the government decided to postpone the bill. The government said,
“We hope to find a solution for the ongoing problem in the near future.”

Black History Month

There are quite a few things that have happened in the past that have contributed to Black History Month. Febru-
ary is the month that it is celebrated in. There are plenty events that people do throughout the nation to celebrate this
time during the year. Founded in 1909, the Nation Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was one
of the earliest and most successful civil rights’ movements in the United States. Its mission was “to ensure the political,
educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all people, and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimina-
tion.” The NAACP coordinated a bunch of challenges to state-sponsored segregation of public schools. Their effort
led to the landmark case in 1954, Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which declared the slogan
"separate but equal" to be unconstitutional. Another movement that the NAACP was involved in would be the March on
Washington in 1963. This association came about two big movements for segregation in the United States, they would
be the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Act.
There are a number of people that have contributed to freedom of African Americans, Thurgood Marshall being one of them. Marshall
played an important role on the basis of two major accomplishments. First off, he was the first African American judge to serve on the Supreme
Court. Secondly, he was also part of the NAACP and part of all of their accomplishments that took place.
Another person who played a huge role would be Martin Luther King, Jr. King was an American clergyman in Montgomery, Alabama.
He followed the tactics of Mahatma Gandhi, meaning that he would solve problems by not using violence. Most people know MLK for his “I
Have A Dream” speech that he delivered during the African American struggles. His other popular event would be the Montgomery Bus Boy-
cott that he led.

St. Patricks Day

Saint Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated internationally on March 17th. It commemo-
rates Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity
in Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official feast day in the early 17th century, and has gradually become a
secular celebration of Irish culture in general. The day is generally characterized by the attendance of church servic-
es, wearing green attire (especially shamrocks), and the lifting of Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol,
which is often proscribed during the rest of the season. Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Republic of
Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador and in Montserrat.
Originally, the color associated with Saint Patrick was blue! Over the years the color green and its associa-
tion with Saint Patrick’s Day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick’s Day. Saint
Patrick’s is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the Pagan Irish, and
the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of day. In the 1798 rebellion, to make
a political statement, Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on March 17th in hope of catching public attention.
Little is known of Patrick’s early life, though it is known that he was born in Roman Britain in the 4th century, into a wealthy Romano-
British family. His father and grandfather were deacons in the Church. At the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken captive
to Ireland as a slave. It is believed he was held somewhere on the west coast of Ireland, possibly Mayo, but the exact locations is unknown. Ac-
cording to his confessions, he was told by God in a dream to flee from captivity to the coast, where he would board a ship and return to Britain.
Upon returning, he quickly joined the Church in Auxerre in Gaul and studied to be a priest. Saint Patrick’s feast day, as a kind of national day,
was already being celebrated by the Irish in Europe in the ninth and tenth centuries. In later times he became more and more widely known as
the patron of Ireland. The church calendar avoids the observance of saints’ feasts during certain days.

The Manneken-Pis, a bronze statue of a young boy urinating that is a symbol of Brussels and a major tourist attraction, has had to
stop peeing because of sub-zero temperatures gripping much of Europe. Officials turned off the flow of water through the statue, which
has stood on a Brussels corner since the 1600s, out of concern the cold might damage its internal mechanism. Overnight temperatures in
the Belgian capital have been in the teens, far below the average minimum for February, and the latest forecast projects that through at
least Feb. 9.
A Massachusetts woman says the FBI used a chain saw blade to cut through her door and held her at gunpoint for at least 30 min-
utes before agents realized they were conducting a raid at the wrong home. Judy Sanchez, of Fitchburg, says she awoke to heavy footsteps
in the stairwell on Jan. 26 and walked into her kitchen in time to see a blade chop through her door. "I took two steps, face the second door,
and I heard the click of a gun, and saying, ‘FBI, get down,’ so I laid down on my living room floor. I was screaming, ‘You have the wrong apart-
ment, you have the wrong apartment,’ over fifty times. And then I seen the big blade coming down my door." She says she was held face-
down on the floor at gunpoint while her 3-year-old daughter Ji’anni cried in another room. It turns out agents were after the other tenant
on the floor of the multi-unit building who was suspected of dealing drugs. The raid was called Operation Red Wolf, a two-year investigation
into drugs and weapons. Sanchez says she and her daughter now have trouble sleeping. The mom said she now sleeps with a baseball bat
next to her bed. The FBI has apologized and is paying for the damage.

What’s Up?
Rick Santorum

A strange and rare event occurred in this small town on January 30th. Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum stopped at the Luverne
Palace Theatre to win the favor of Rock County. Why Luverne? Recently Santorum has been traveling throughout Iowa and had won the Caucus
of Lyon County, so they wanted to continue their travels in this area.
Santorum’s foundation is about family, faith and freedom. The picture of “family” has been decreasing because of divorces and different
household environments, which allows the government to have more control. If the home life isn’t healthy, then America is not healthy. Now
that there aren’t as many father figures in homes, there are a lot more people in prison and more violence. He is all about keeping what our
founding fathers gave to us. The United States has been one of the best countries in the world based on freedom, and we’re starting to forget
that and give it up. This is our time to remember our God-given rights and change how we are doing things. Throughout time, the way we do
things has evolved from what we ought to do, to what we want to do. The culture in America is slowly changing out from underneath us. Now,
everybody focuses on the differences of the people instead of coming together and being equal. This is our moment to fix it. If we do not do
something now, it will be too late. Santorum is working to become the country we used to be, and remind us who we should be.
In the presidential campaign process, the candidates are involved in a caucus in every state. A caucus is a meeting of supporters or mem-
bers of a political party or movement. They are mostly used in the United States and Canada. In the United States, the caucus is referred to as a
meeting to coordinate member’s actions, choose group policy, or nominate candidates for various offices. Santorum has recently won the Cau-
cus for Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, and Missouri. The result of the Iowa caucus was a .1% difference between Romney and Santorum. Romney
has won one less caucus than Santorum, putting Santorum in the lead.
Cinderellas Glass Slipper

Lights, camera, action! This year’s spring play is called Cinderella’s Glass Slipper and it is a musical. It is the story of an orphan Cinder-
ella that has her dream come true by finding prince charming. But along the way she has to find a way to get to the Grand Ball, get past her
very blonde step-sisters, and her very mean step-mother. Then she gets the privilege of meeting her very own fairy Godmother. Along the
way, you will get to listen to the funny musical numbers that will have you laughing. It is a very funny play that you will not want to miss.
The play will be going on March 29th, 30th, and 31st. So don’t forget to come and have a good laugh with the cast. You won’t regret the
decision to come and see the twist the play has to give on “Cinderella”. This play will have you leaving still humming the songs that the cast
sang. Hope you see you there!

Twitter was created in March of 2006 by a man names Jack Dorsey, and was launched in July of that year. The original project code-
name was Twttr, inspired by the website Flickr and the five-character length of American SMS short codes. The team finally settled with the
name “Twitter” which means “chirps from birds,” and also “a short burst of inconsequential information” which is exactly what Twitter is.
Here is a short little timeline of Twitter user numbers:
• In 2007, Twitter had 400,000 tweets posted per quarter.
• In 2008 there were only 3 million registered users.
• In 2008 there were only 1.25 million tweets per day.
• January 2008 there were only 8 employees.
• In 2009 twitter had 8 million registered users.
• In 2011 there are now over 400 employees.
3 years, 2 months, and 1 day is how long it took to get from the first tweet to the billionth tweet. Now, it takes only a week to send
over a billion tweets. When Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, there were 456 tweets per second (TPS) a record at that time. The cur-
rent TPS record is 6,939 tweets per second, set 4 seconds after midnight in Japan on New Year’s Day. 572,000 was the highest number of
new accounts created in a day, which was on March 12, 2011. 460,000 is the average number of new accounts per day created in February
2011. In March 2011, there were an estimated 225 million users. The first unassisted off-Earth Twitter message was posted from the Interna-
tional Space Station by NASA astronaut T. J. Creamer on January 22, 2010.
I personally hated Twitter when I first got it. I had absolutely no idea how to do anything on it, and actually deleted it within the first
two days of having it. After about a month I decided I was going to try it again, and I’m so glad I did. I go on Twitter a lot now, and tweet
quite a bit, too. If you don’t already have twitter, I highly suggest getting it!

Shaun White

Did you see the X Games this past week? If not, Shaun White did something that made history
and will be remembered for a long time. He was in two different events during these X Games. When the
Slope style was about to start he decided to not participate because he had a left ankle sprain that kept
him out of this competition. Shaun wanted to do this so that he could try and compete in his favorite
event, which is snowboard super pipe. He has won this event four times in a row and wants to win it for
the fifth time in a row.
The competition was at night, so during that day Shaun was icing his ankle like crazy to make sure
he was able to compete in the snowboard super pipe. Once the night came he decided that he was going
to compete in his favorite competition. In his first one he was the last person to go and score 94 out of
100, which is really good and it put him in the lead for the competition. In this event you get three runs so there was plenty chances for the lead
to get taken over by someone else. In the second runs for everybody nobody passed Shaun’s score, not even him. Going into the third event he
was watched all of his competitors try and beat his score. One guy got close with 93 out of 100. As all of the competitors went, no one beat his
score meaning Shaun White had a victory run to do for his last run. Most people would think he wouldn’t try all of his top tricks and be careful
because he already had the competition won, but you have to remember that this is Shaun White, and he always goes for it all. During his last
run, that’s exactly what he did. He threw in the awesome tricks that he always does and he did one trick that has never been done before. This
trick was a front side double cork 1260, which no one besides him has ever landed. While he was waiting he was very excited on how he per-
formed. What made him even happier was that he got 100 out of 100 for a score. This score has never ever been accomplished before Shaun
White.
Shaun White won his fifth consecutive snowboard super pipe competition and scored the first 100 ever, he will never forget the day he
did all of that.
NHL All-Star Superbowl Commercials

There are two interesting nights in the NHL when the all-star players come into the Super Bowl mainly because the commercials
together, they play a game, and have competitions against each other. They are are always hilarious and well made. This year personally I

The Life of a Manager

When people go to a sporting event, most people focus on the players and the coaches. However, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes
work going on that is done by the managers. For almost every sport (except tennis) there are a couple of people helping to manage the team
and make sure everything goes smoothly. Since we are still in the winter sports season, the Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Hockey,
and Wrestling managers are the points of interest as of now.
The Boys Basketball team’s managers are Jenni Fick and Erin Fick, with Trevor Teal doing video. The Boys team was lucky enough to get
an iPad to help them take stats at games. This is an improvement over the pencil and paper of years past, as it is much easier and they can also
take more accurate stats for the opposing team as well. Besides stats, there are some other responsibilities that fall under their manager re-
sponsibilities. Trevor Teal has to bring the video equipment to every game. At away games, they always bring cookies for the team. They also
have to remind Mr. Rops to bring an extra jersey, since he tends to forget a lot of things.
Girls Basketball is managed by Kristen Scheidt, Emily Robinson, and Maddie Stegenga. They also received an iPad for stats this year.
Their duties are similar to Boys Basketball as they take stats on the iPad for the team. Kristen Scheidt said that her favorite part of being a man-
ager was that she now can watch and understand what is going on in basketball. She also said that “I like to see how the players progress over
the season”, which is a nice addition to the everyday manager tasks.
Boys Hockey has Keegan Schoenfelder and Jeff Yen as managers. Girls Hockey is managed by Ashlinn Curtis. The two Boys Hockey
team managers are a sort of tag team when it comes to responsibilities. They are in charge of filling the water bottles for the team and taking
video of game. Jeff Yen said that they switch off between water and video.
The Wrestling team has a ton of managers, with Ariel Reker at head manager and Lauren Guy taking video for the varsity team. For
the JV team, Paige Baker takes stats, while Brenna Brown and Jada Hoven videotape the matches. Head manager Ariel Reker said that she has
multiple responsibilities. Besides keeping track of the other four managers, she takes stats for the varsity matches. Also, if a wrestler were to
pin their opponent in a match, Ariel gives them an actual pin to put on their jacket to measure their accomplishments.
Peer Helping

Peer Helping is an extracurricular activity that is based from the idea
of getting kids to go out and get more involved more in the community.
Peer Helping is offered to 11-12 graders, you can sign up as a 10th grader.
The rules are that every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday we get together in
Ms. Harms room for an informational meeting. She will post hours for mov-
ies, and activities that are outside the school for us to sign up and get our
community hours, and tell us any news for the next week.
How we get graded is by how many hours you get a quarter. If you
have a study hall you have to get 65 hours a quarter and if you don’t have a
study hall you have to get 40 hours a quarter. You have to have 3 commu-
nity events. Those are activities that are not in school, like movies, or help-
ing at a sporting event. You have to have at least 3 a quarter. If you have a
study hall you get the opportunity to go to the elementary to work with the
kids there. That is a really good way to your hours in. If you get more than
the number of hours you need they will carry over to the next quarter. It is
a good way to get ahead for the year. And during the summer you get the
opportunity to get 100 hours. Then you can choose to split them evenly
during the year. So 25 hours for every quarter. You get graded on how suc-
cessfully you complete the hours. In your grade there are 3 officers. They are
in charge of counting your hours. They are the people you go to if you have
some questions.
A fun thing about Peer Helping is that on occasion you get to have
the lunch meetings. When we get those we get to have pizza in Ms. Harm’s
room which is a lot of fun. Your hours are not hard to get in, all you do is
have to get out and volunteer in the community. Peer Helping is a good
way for you to get out in the community and get to know other people
but it is a responsibility you have to make because you have to be at every
meeting in the mornings. Peer Helping is a fun and easy way to get out and
participate in the community.

Graduation Party Must Have”s

All seniors have to eventually plan out what they want at their graduation parties as far as cake, food, baby pictures and pictures
throughout high school, decorations, and planning the guest list. The first thing that mother’s usually ask their children when they talk about
their party is more than likely going to be what they want for food, and what they want their cake to be. No graduation party is complete
without having a cake. Usually this is a grocery store sheet cake with an edible photo on it, which is typically a senior picture of the graduat-
ing senior, but regardless, it is still delicious.
The only thing that guys care about out of their entire graduation party is what kind of food they are going to have. Even if your favor-
ite food is spaghetti, that’s hard for your guests to eat, and people go to many graduations per day, and they get full easily. The easiest food to
have at your party is sandwiches and snack type food.
Most moms usually hate to even think of their “baby” graduating. Usually looking through the baby pictures, will make your mom
shed some tears, and make them realize how fast you’ve grown up. There’s no better excuse for mom to show off embarrassing photos of you
than at your graduation focusing on your achievements prior to turning 18. By the time everyone leaves the party, everyone will know what
the graduate looked like at their first, third, and fifth birthday. Most seniors usually have an iMovie of all their pictures as a baby, moving all
the way up to them being a senior.
Decorations aren’t too bad to go buy because you can just buy anything red and white to go along with our school colors. But some
seniors decide to not use those colors and pick their favorite colors instead. When you set up your decorations, make sure that it is easy for all
of your guests to see what you have set out to look at.
You should invite all of your friends and family to your graduation party. Most people have a guestbook or some other item for people
to sign like the graduates favorite book as a child, so they know who all came to their party. From the guestbook, the graduates send “thank
you” cards to all of the people that signed the guestbook.
Crazy Scholarships

Most of us seniors have our college picked out, and know what we are going to do with our lives. The
scary part is how the heck we are going to pay for it! Every year college gets more expensive and harder for
us to pay. One way to get us through it is scholarships. Some people don’t even try applying for them be-
cause they think they are not smart enough, and don’t stand a chance. Luckily there are crazy scholarships
that do not require much knowledge.
One of the ridiculous scholarships is the Michigan Llama Association Scholarship. If your parents are
members of the Michigan Llama Association, you can apply for a $500 scholarship, which you can renew up
to three times. In the club you can adopt llamas, show them, and help out the llama community. So in other
words if you have an obsession with llamas and want to join a club you can win some money for college.
Another crazy scholarship is the Chick and Sophie Major Memorial Duck Calling Contest. To be
eligible for this scholarship you have to be a senior, and have a kick-butt duck call. The first place for this
scholarship can win $1,500. The second place gets $500, and a couple of third place winners get $300 to-
wards college. All you have to do is send a video of your best duck call to the website, and they choose the
winners.
If you are a good cook, and want to win some money this would be the best scholarship for you. It is
called the All-American Apple Pie Recipe Contest. All you have to do for this scholarship is to make your best
pie, and hopefully it’s good enough to win it. The winner of the contest gets $25,000 to put towards their
college tuition.
Do you love duct tape? If so, you could make a dress out of it for prom and win a scholarship. To enter
the contest you have to be at least 14 years old, and must be a legal resident of the United States or Canada. The contest starts on March 7 and
goes until June 13. The rules are that each couple must attend a high school, and both of their prom attire must be completely made of duct
tape. The prom attire must be a completely original design, and may not be copyrighted. To submit your design you can send a picture of you
and your date at prom with your creation on to www.stuckatprom.com . The first place winner will win a cash prize of $5,000 for college. Ad-
ditionally six honorable mentioned winners will get a prize of $3,000. The categories that the third place winners can win in are: best purse, best
corsage, best shoes, best tie, and best jewelry.
