SJV Band/Choir/Music Lab
                                   2020-2021

Overview
Welcome to the SJV band and choir classes! In these classes, students will learn
to work in an ensemble while building music fundamentals. Students will also
learn a variety of music literature from classical to contemporary. Over the
course of the year, students will develop critical listening and team building skills
as they hone their performance abilities. These skills are vital for becoming a
better learner and outstanding citizen.

Due to the COVID-19 circumstance this performance season, we will be changing
the way rehearsals and classes are held at school. All rehearsals will be held
outside when the weather permits, and music classes will be held in the computer
lab. Precautions (social distancing, masks, bell covers, cleaning) will be in place
to follow CDC guidelines and recommendations from the University of Colorado
aerosol study results:
https://www.nfhs.org/articles/unprecedented-international-coalition-
led-by-performing-arts-organizations-to-commission-covid-19-study/

All students will need their own band instruments for band
class. During the first week of school, we will be fitting new
students on instruments for the year. Students can rent
instruments from Marshall Music or Wind Works. Another
option is to buy used or new instrument from a vendor or
online music store. The school does have a limited stock of
school own instrument for use as well. Please contact me if you need help getting
an instrument and I will be happy to help!

Keep in mind, having a quality instrument that is built to last and sounds good
while playing will more likely lead to students enjoying playing music more and
sticking with it over trying to play on a cheap, terrible sounding instrument.
Please contact me if you need help purchasing an instrument. I can give you
brand recommendations for quality student instruments: ncross@sjvkids.org
Grading
Grades will reflect the daily growth of the student. To succeed as an ensemble,
each musician needs to be prepared, be focused, and have a positive attitude.
   ● Daily Participation
         ○ During the normal school year, students earn daily points for actively
participating, having their instrument and music ready, short playing
quizzes during class. This year, daily notes/feedback will take the
place of the points. Check TeacherEase for a daily snapshot of
              student progress.
   ● Weekly Practice Log (20pts)
         ○ Students are required to spend 60 minutes practicing outside of class
and submit a weekly practice log with a parent signature.
         ○ Goals and song assignments will be indicated. Students will perform
their assignments the following week for their playing tests.
         ○ These CAN be submitted on Google Classroom
   ● Playing Tests (20-25pts)
         ○ Short playing tests will be given weekly. Students can record their
tests on the classroom tablet or perform for the teacher. If they
record their playing test, they can then review their own
              performance before submitting.
         ○ These CAN be submitted on Google Classroom
   ● Assignments (points TBD)
         ○ Music Theory/History Assignments/Quizzes
         ○ Rhythm Counting Assignments/Quizzes
         ○ If absent, it is the responsibility of the student to make up
assignments/quizzes/playing tests. I will email home to notify you of
              any missing work VIA Teacherease.
         ○ These CAN be submitted on Google Classroom
   ● Performances/Concerts/Festival (100 points each)
         ○ In place of live performances, students will prepare concert music
and record their individual part to submit to the teacher. We will be
compiling all students together into one video to create virtual
              performances during the year.
   ● Late work
         ○ Late work will be accepted with a 10% grade reduction (this includes
              practice logs).
Required Materials
  ● A working instrument for band (student owned, rented, signed-out)
       ○ Instruments rented through Marshall Music can be sent out for
           repairs from SJV on Mondays.

           school owned instruments.

Weekly Practice Logs
During class, we will pick music to practice
                                        at home.

Try to practice some of the music for 10
                                        minutes a day.

The goal is 60 minutes of total practice a
                                        week.

Practice logs will be due every Friday.
Make sure your name is written clearly at
the top. A parent/guardian signature is
                                        required at the bottom.

You will be tested on the assigned music
                                        during the following week.

Always turn in your log even if you don’t
have a total of 60 minutes. You can still
                                        get partial credit.

Write down any questions you might have
under “Exercises I’d like to work on…”
