CHAIRMANS
December and Christmas have been and gone and by Happy clicking All.
now we should all be back to our usual rounes. I
trust everyone had a good break and relaxing holiday. “Sometimes it is nice to just enjoy the moment"
The new year and decade is begun and with it hope- – Judy Mann
fully new opportunies and experiences for us all. Let
us hope it will prove to be 20plenty indeed.

I was reading an arcle recently on new year's resolu-
ons and the longevity of them. Apparently the
majority of resoluons have been abandoned by the
                                                           IANDAMERELL
19th of January. So here is hoping that for all those of
you who did make resoluons, you have at least
made it past the scking point.

As always we have a full year ahead. our compeon
calendar kicks off with the annual Tri Naons compe-
on which will be happening in March. We have the
DCC / WCC challenge to look forward to followed by
the Kzn Regional compeon. Following this we
prepare for the PSSA Naonal compeon and finish
off the season with that most fun event, the MCC /
WCC challenge. So lots on the compeon front to
keep us all busy.

Our annual prize giving and AGM is just around the
corner and will be an event again not to be missed.
This is a wonderful evening where awards for your
hard work, dedicaon and creavity are issued. Our
normal AGM will also be held and commiee mem-
bers retained and or new members voted in. Remem-
ber this is your commiee and you have the opportu-
nity of elecng those members you feel would best
serve the club needs. Our guest speaker for the
evening is our own Andrew Pike and this will be a
presentaon not to be missed.

The December break is a great me to sit, gather
oneself and reflect on the year past. It was during one
of these moments that I recalled a theme from a fairly
recent report I penned regarding just that - some-
mes it is good to enjoy the moment rather than rush
around madly trying to get an image and losing out
on a wonderful experience. A comment made by one
of our members at an oung to our local Mangrove
Swamps. Definitely a resoluon I will be adopng for
the year ahead. Thanks for the inspiraon Judy.

ANDREW PIKE
AWARDS EVENING GUEST SPEAKER
Andrew Pike, who was part of the legal
investigation into the Oceanos’ sink-
ing, recreates the compelling drama
and extraordinary heroism of the
greatest maritime rescue in South Afri-
can history.

Andrew is an acclaimed author of People
Risks, The Talking Stick and most recently,
Against All Odds – the epic story of the
Oceanos rescue.

Having 35 years of experi-
ence in maritime law and
being a specialist in mari-
time, ports and logistics
law, it is understandable
that he had a big role in
the legal investigation of asking questions, tracking down survivors and
the sinking of the Oceanos rescuers and then started sharing the story a few
in 1991. years ago. Eventually, it became a story too good
not to be told, and I wanted to be the one to tell
What Andrew has to say it from all its different perspectives.
about what inspired him to
write the book: (taken from I also didn’t want the story to die of old age –
an article in the Highway Mail) there is already a whole generation which knows
                                                     little to nothing about it.”
“The inspiration was my
own. I have always known And if you didn’t know it already, Andrew is
a lot about the legal and technical aspects also a member of WCC. Come and hear him
surrounding the sinking, but not a lot about the speak. Maybe you can get him to sign your
actual rescue and human aspects. I started copy of the book!

It was a beautiful morning and the hundreds of
Egyptian geese on the bank of the dam also
thought so as they started their day with
stretching and squawking. Quite the sight and
a good start to the day.

After leaving the dam I headed south east up
the hill toward the higher part of the reserve
where I found an adult female rhino with her
youngster. Always a thrill to see these beautiful
animals. As usual Tala served up plenty ante-
lope, zebra and wildebeest as I cruised around
the dirt roads near the lodges in this part of the
reserve. Lovely to see so many new born bles-
bok lying or stumbling next to their mums.
Some WCC members were lucky enough to
witness the birth of one of these antelope.
What a privilege.

bags and even a coffee bodum. Why didn’t I
think of that? The smell of bacon and eggs,
boerewors and other tasty treats being pre-
pared, must have started the other visitors to
the picnic area salivating. The chatter and
laughter was lively as we all sat around sharing
our sightings and other bush stories.

All too soon it was time to pack up and head
home. We said our goodbyes and some of us
continued our drive to areas not yet covered,
where we came across some baby ostrich
scratching around with their parents.

What a great morning and always a privilege
to visit Tala on a beautiful day and spend time
with like minded WCC friends.

A HIDDEN GEM AT THE KLOOF & HIGHWAY SPCA
JANUARY CLUB OUTING It’s SIR PEACOCK TO YOU

Story by Trevor LEA
Early on Sunday 26 January, an enthusiastic
group of photographers met in the car park of
the Kloof SPCA. Unknown to some, it would
appear, there is a lovely little nature reserve on
the premises, called the Glenhome Nature
Reserve. It is a relatively safe venue in which to
unwind, soak in the beauty of nature and enjoy
a little peace and quiet.

The objective was to leisurely explore the area
                                                whilst obtaining some photographic treasures
on the way. Photographers arrived with an
assortment of equipment required for nature
and macro shots, including macro lenses,
speed lights and makeshift light diffusers.

Lucia Phillips kicked the occasion off excellently
by explaining the history of the land on which
the Kloof and Highway SPCA facilities are situat-
ed. She explained that the land belonged to the
Field family of pioneers, and that the old house
on the premises was originally their manor
                                                house.

Photographers were able to wander through
grassland, as well as beautiful forest areas
which provided some welcome relief from the
heat. Some photographers had the opportunity
to capture some slow-shutter speed images of
                                                interesting waterfalls in the area.

Lovely little wild flowers were also on offer, and
there were also opportunities to photograph
insects on the way, including some dragonflies
and damselflies. A wonderful aspect of photog-

                                                would otherwise go unnoticed.

After a fabulous morning in the reserve, a visit
to the tea garden provided some well-earned
refreshments and a chance to socialise while
enjoying some live music. A few members with
some energy left, went browsing around the
well stocked Thrift Shops that this SPCA is well
known for. It can be said, that a bargain or two
                                                was found.

Many thanks to the committee for organising
                                                the outing.

HOW TO PROTEC T YOUR CAMERA AGAINST

                            LENS FUNGAL DAMAGE

Protecting your expensive camera against lens fungal damage is neces-
sary to prevent lasting damage. Left unchecked, fungal growth can
damage the glass elements in lenses forever.

Fungus is a living, growing microorganism which can form on camera
lenses. This type of mold is most common in humid climates. Often the
damage it causes is only minor, but a rampant fungal growth can ruin a
                            lens.

Cleaning fungus on exterior elements of lenses can be relatively easy.
However, you need to catch it before it becomes too advanced. Growth
of mold on interior lens elements is more difficult to detect and it requires
a skilled technician to be able to remove it. The lens must be stripped
down, cleaned and then rebuilt – which is a costly process.

Prevention of fungal growth on lenses is far more preferable than having
to remove mold. If left unrestrained, fungus can permanently damage a
lens because it eats into the glass. Once cleaned, furrows remain in the
lens and affects the way light refracts through it.

                            METHODS FOR PREVENTING LENS FUNGUS

Taking proper care of your camera equipment is always good practice.
Well-kept equipment will last longer and retain higher used resale value.
Here are some ideas to help you avoid encountering the problem of
                            fungal growth in your lenses.

                            CLEAN YOUR LENSES OFTEN
Many photographers are in the habit of cleaning only the front element
of their lenses, or the filters that screw on to cover them.

Wiping down your whole lenses with a damp microfiber cloth from time
to time is good for them. Particularly if you’ve been photographing in a
hot, humid climate. The atmosphere and sweat from your hands can
                            affect your lens.
    westville camera club 22
LENS FUNGAL DAMAGE CONTINUED...

Using a microfibre cloth helps to avoid leaving unwanted lint deposits on
the lens. Once you’ve wiped your lens down with a damp cloth, have a
dry one on hand to wipe it down once more. Using a hairdryer on a low
SKILLS PAGES
heat will also help any moisture evaporate from your lens.

Don’t leave your lenses in the sun to dry them. This can cause other prob-
lems. *PLEASE SEE NOTE AT END OF ARTICLE

STORE YOUR LENSES IN A DRY BOX WITH SILICA GEL
An airtight box is a good place to store your lenses. It’s convenient to
leave all your gear in your camera bag, but left there it’s susceptible to
                            affect by moisture.

Including a quantity of silica gel in the box helps to absorb any residual
moisture. Small packets of silica gel often come with consumer goods.
These do not contain enough to make a significant difference.

Silica gel can be purchased at a store or online, in larger quantities. I
prefer the type of gel that can be used more than once. It changes color
from orange to a blue color once it’s absorbed moisture. It can then be
dried out by placing it in a microwave oven for a few minutes at medium
                            power setting.

                                                     MOIST & DRY SILICA GEL

A cup full of silica gel placed in an old or stray sock with a knot tied in it
will help keep your gear dry in a box. You’ll want to make sure the sock
has no holes worn in it.

                                                          PELICAN CASE

Food storage boxes with good seals are useful. I use this type of box to
store my film cameras and older lenses I don’t use often. Every so often I
dry out the silica gel in the microwave oven.

A more expensive and robust option is a Pelican case. These rugged
camera cases are completely airtight when closed. Depending on the
size of the case you may need to add more than one sock of silica gel.

KEEP YOUR LENSES IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM
If you have an air-conditioned room, this is also a good location to store
your lenses and other camera gear.

Air conditioning not only keeps the air in a room cooler, but it lowers the
humidity. Ideally, you do not want the temperature of the room to be too
cold. If you live in a hot climate, this can be problematic when you take
the lenses outside. They will fog up.

When a lens is very cold and then taken into a very warm environment,
condensation can form quickly. You’ll have to wait for it to clear before
you’re able to take any photos.

                            USE A DEHUMIDIFIER
This is the type of household appliance which sucks water from the air. It
will not cool the room, but it will draw out any moisture in the air.

Running a dehumidifier for a few hours a day in a small room in wet
weather is usually enough to dry the air.

They are often portable and cheaper than an air conditioning unit. They
                            also consume less electricity.

This appliance is a dedicated piece of equipment. It’s designed for the
task of helping prevent lens fungal damage in your camera equipment.

                            CONCLUSION

Taking good care of your precious lenses is well worth it. Finding mold in
your favorite lens would be soul-destroying.

Investing in an appropriate storage solution can be far cheaper than
having to pay for lens cleaning.

Some photographers swear by putting their camera equipment in
the sun to combat fungus/mould. Please do so with care should
                               you choose this method.

Below is an excerpt from an article that does suggest it, taken from:
                               https://www.beyondphototips.com/humidity-fungus-and-cameras-problems-solutions/

                                                      S U N L I GH T / U V R A D I AT I O N

Put your camera out in the sun from time to time. Remove the lens
(or you could end up with a hole burnt in your shutter or some other
part), filter, body, etc, and put them all out in sunlight for a while.
If you manage to work this into your monthly camera care routine,
                                you should be fine.

You could also try what some photographers do: use a High Power
UV lamp in their storage area. Why? Because prolonged exposure
to UV (Ultra-Violet) radiation kills or retards fungal growth. Do
remember to take your UV filters off if you decide to try this
method out, because they are designed to keep UV rays out of
your lenses. The lens coating blocks UV light too, to an extent.

project runs the risk on never geng completed. Set a deadline for yourself. The me can be a month, 3

HONOURS APPLICATIONS - PSSA AND FIAP
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRO
A FRIENDLY REMINDER THAT THIS YEAR’S APPLICATIONS FOR YOUR
HONOURS IS NOW OPEN ON PHOTOVAULT AND CLOSES ON THE 25th
JANUARY. We look forward to the amazing panels again being presented
for judging for this great honour and achievement.

GOOD LUCK, TO ALL THE APPLICANTS.

Many of our members at the beginning of each year can also start to apply
for FIAP honours – all info on this is on our website. We start to look at
these end of January beginning of February each year but we only send to
FIAP when we are sure everything is in order.

There is not a set deadline for these honours as members still perhaps need
some International Salon acceptances to qualify for this honour and we
like to allow time for this to happen. Please inform me at evelyng@mweb-
biz.co.za if you are intending to apply for these honours so that we have
your name on record as working on your application.

Jill, who is the FIAP Liaison person likes to be able to send to FIAP
March/April of each year but stressed that it is only done when we are sure
all our members have successfully completed the forms.

                                 MONTHLY COMPETITIONS

some clubs perhaps having missed a month for various reasons. This
competition also closes on the 25th of the month as you know and is
already also open in Photovault. We look forward once again to the

[Thank goodness for Metadata in
bridge as I would never have
remembered any of this.]

This photo was taken 10 years ago on 02 May 2010 so I have had to try and dig up some memo-
ries of how I got the final effect.

I don’t oen use flash and am not a fan of studio lights preferring natural light though I also
have 2 old desk lamps that are brought out on occasions and I think I may have made use of one
of these to throw light from behind catching the petals, but looking at the photo there may
have been natural light coming from the front, sorry I cant be sure what I did 10 years ago!

The rose was held up with the use of a pin holder, (this is a flower arranging tool comprising of
nails imbedded in lead onto which flower stems are impaled). Very useful for photography as
well.

The background was most probably a white board, though I was also using a white reflector
around this me as well.

I have included the original photo which I converted to
black and white and cranked up the white/highlights unl
I got the effect I wanted especially bringing out the water
droplets on the right hand petal which I had sprayed onto
the rose at the beginning of the photoshoot.

I also removed a few blemishes that were on the petals.
Clarity/sharpening also helped to give definion to the
                                     petal edges.

PLEASE send in your shot & story. It’s always fun to read how others have done it
