Trip Overview
Very few places can compete with South Africa when it comes to its diverse range of wildlife,
landscapes and adventurous activities. This family adventure holiday will take you to some of the most
magical areas of South Africa starting in the majestic city of Cape Town, which is flanked by the
stunning Table Mountain, before exploring the KwaZulu-Natal region which contains the oldest
proclaimed nature reserve and ample opportunity for spotting the notorious 'Big 5'.

Cape Town itself offers a hive of diverse activities. A hike on Table Mountain offers panoramic views
of the city below. You will also explore the dynamic Cape Peninsula and the bustling harbours of Hout
Bay and Mariners Wharf which are home to native seals as well as dolphins and whales (in whale
season, July to November). Cape Town lays claim to one of South Africa’s most exquisite wine regions
and a family cycling tour through the lush valleys and numerous trails is an ideal way to explore.

The KwaZulu-Natal region, which includes the city of Durban, is perhaps one of South Africa’s most
magical regions. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi National Park is one of the oldest proclaimed nature reserves in
South Africa and is home to an immense variety of wildlife including the Big 5 and white rhinos, which
were saved from extinction with the help from a project run from this reserve. The safaris and game
drives are likely to create lifelong memories as you experience some of the world’s most majestic
animals in their natural habitat. One such safari contains a river cruise down the St. Lucia estuary which
allows you to get up close and personal with wild hippos and Nile crocodiles. Children will delight in
exploring hidden coves whilst also having the opportunity to snorkel in an abundant underwater world
in areas such as Kosi Bay.

This holiday also offers insight into age-old African cultures with visits to a traditional rural village and
the Zulu Cultural Village. These tours will give you an experience of traditional African hospitality as
you visit homesteads, shops and schools and also witness a Zulu cultural performance.

Following these magical and adventurous family activities, you will end your trip in the cultural heart of
the Rainbow Nation which is the city of Durban. This colourful city offers fantastic beaches and was
the last British Bastion with an abundance of colonial homes and impressive architecture. It is the ideal
location to end this truly enchanting family adventure.

   DAY
                 ARRIVAL AND WELCOME
    1

After your overnight flight, you will be arriving into Cape Town International Airport. You will then be
transferred to your accommodation for the next four nights. After settling into your new surroundings,
you will meet your guide in the evening who will provide a briefing on the following days' adventures.

For those who are looking to make the most out of their South Africa travel experience, then a visit to
the Robben Island UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must do activity. Robben Island was an isolated
prison for political prisoners, the most infamous of which was Nelson Mandela. It showcases the
tragedies and triumphs of the struggle against racial oppression in South Africa and is a humbling and
inspirational activity. It is very significant in terms of understanding the political history of South Africa
and can be very easily added to your itinerary. This would include adding an extra day at the start of
your journey. For more information please speak to one of our Travel Experts.

Included Meals: None

   DAY
URBAN FAMILY SAFARI AND TABLE MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE
    2

After enjoying your first breakfast in South Africa, your fun-filled family adventure will begin. Your
journey will begin at sea level and end 1085 metres higher on the symbolic Table Mountain which
looms over the beautiful city of Cape Town. Exploration will commence at the Sea Point promenade
where you will go on a treasure hunt by bike or on foot. Following in the footsteps of ‘Stan the
Strandloper’, a mysterious and enticing treasure hunt awaits you. The Strandlopers were the original
hunter-gatherers of the Cape Peninsula who survived by hunting and gathering food along the
beaches of South Western Africa. The treasure hunt will allow you to follow in their footsteps following
a map and finding the hidden stashes of treasure along the trail.

The waterfront is delightful for children and adults alike as it is often a hive of activity and has a huge
Ferris wheel at its centre. This tour will allow you to peruse the watershed markets which contain an
impressive array of local crafts whilst also enjoying panoramic views from the colourful V&A clock
tower.

After exploring the beautifully vibrant and colourful streets of Bo-Kaap you will head for the iconic
Table Mountain.

Your exploration of Table Mountain will include a cable car ride to the top and a light hike showcasing
some of the most spectacular 360° views of the city below. Maclears Beacon is the highest point on
Table Mountain and is a relatively light hike from the cable car track. The panoramic views of this
magical city are certainly worth the journey, but the hike can be tailored to meet the group's specific
needs. For those who desire slightly more adventure, a daring abseiling activity is also available

    3

Following breakfast, you will make for Simons Town which is south of Cape Town and located on the
shores of False Bay. An exciting adventure awaits as you seek rogue penguins on a secret beach
which is only accessible to locals. This region offers thriving penguin colonies, but rather than visit the
major breeding areas between busy walkways, you will venture to hidden coves where other colonies
exist away from the tourist trail. On route, you will undertake a fun-filled family zip-line tour in
Constantia, over treetops, on what is one of Africa’s longest and highest runs.

You’ll then head to Kalk Bay for even more marine life. This working fishing harbour is home to seals
and it’s not uncommon to see dolphins nearby too. You’ll also have a go at throwing a fishing line
over the harbour. The town of Kalk Bay is full of shops, restaurants and cafes so you’ll have plenty to
see and do during your time here.

Your next stop will be Simon’s Town and following your mission to find penguins, you will continue
your exploration of the Cape Peninsula with a visit to the Peninsula Reserve. This diverse nature
reserve offers a unique opportunity to search for the Cape 5 (ostrich, baboon, Mountain Zebra,
Bontebok and tortoise). This thrilling family-orientated hike will lead you through stunning and
contrasting terrain before opening out onto deserted beaches which contain secret coves and crystal
clear rock pools. Keep an eye out for various species of whale which also frequent this magical region.

At the end of your day’s adventure, you will return to your accommodation driving back along the
Atlantic Seaboard and over the scenic coastal drive of Chapman’s Peak for a further evening of
relaxation and an opportunity to use the hotel's facilities.

Included Meals: Breakfast

DAY HOUT BAY, KIRSTENBOSCH AND CONSTANTIA VALLEY FAMILY
    4 ADVENTURE

You will enjoy a leisurely breakfast before beginning your day’s adventure by exploring the working
harbours of Hout Bay and Mariners Wharf. Children will delight in meeting the resident seals which
often play alongside the boats in the harbour. Keep an eye out for pods of dolphins as you stroll
along a stretch of a nearby beach leading to the foot of Chapman’s Peak.

Your journey will then take you to the leafy avenues of the Constantia Winelands and onto the heart of
the Constantia Nek forest above Hout Bay. The Constantia Valley offers a fun mix of tracks for a
leisurely cycle ride away from traffic, through the stunning scenery surrounding the region. This short
cycling trip will allow you to explore the greenbelt of Constantia with rolling hills and beautiful oak-

Robben Island is a location of immense historical
significance and a must-see for visitors to Cape Town. For
nearly 400 years it was a place of banishment, exile and
imprisonment. Perhaps the most infamous of these
prisoners was Nelson Mandela, who spent 18 years of his
27-year prison term on Robben Island. The location has
since been converted into a museum and is a UNESCO
World Heritage Site which showcases Mandela’s mental
victory over the horrific conditions in which he was forced
to endure. Prisoners were confined to small cells with only
a sleeping mat and a bucket toilet, whilst also undertaking hard labour each day.

The island-inspired leaders of the struggle against racial oppression to forge their political thinking
and the relationships that would become a feature of post-apartheid South Africa. In addition to
Mandela, two other inmates of Robben Island have gone on to be President of South Africa: Kgalema
Motlanthe, and current President Jacob Zuma. A visit to Robben Island is a humbling experience and
is one of the most important cultural heritage destinations due to the triumphs and tragedies
experienced within the prison walls.

You will be picked up at your hotel and transferred to the ferry. Once you arrive on the island, you will
go on a tour by bus and visit the prison.

Duration: 8 hours
Dates: daily

Please note: this excursion to Robben Islands includes an extra night in Cape Town staying in a
