Moving from Social Isolation to Social Inclusion During the Pandemic
In the simplest of ways, staying connected to a community and people makes us
feel good in mind, body and spirit. While we may not be able to control our social
isolation at the moment, there is good news! There are so many opportunities to
stay connected and social while isolating. It just means taking a leap of faith and
finding new ways to explore and stay connected with the outside world. It is a
new approach to the idea of “social activities”.
We are happy to let you know that we will continue to offer virtual and select
in-person programming this spring! Classes include many favorites like Chair
Yoga, Line dancing, Ballroom dancing, painting and more!
And the best part– you can access many of these classes from the comfort and
safety of your own home!
Virtual classes will be offered via Zoom, a free to use, web-based video
conferencing tool. All you need to participate is a computer, tablet, or cell phone
with a camera so we can see you. Steps to connect will be provided upon
registration, but don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.
See page 8 for more information about how to use Zoom.

If there is something you would like to see made possible through the
Without Walls program , or if you have a passion or talent you would like to share
through our virtual ZOOM programming, please reach out and let us know!
We would be happy to talk to you about how you can share
                          your special skills with others!

                                                                                      5

APRIL IS NATIONAL VOLUNTEER MONTH!

                   National Volunteer Appreciation Week
                                   April 18-24, 2021
It has been some time since we have all seen each other, and you are all greatly missed!
We thank you for your dedication and commitment to continue volunteering your
time throughout this past year. Without you, we would not have been able
to reach the number of older adults in our community that we have.
Canada was home to the largest baby boom of any western country. Considered to be born
between 1946 and 1964, the baby boomer generation can be characterized as having multiple
mosaics, between ethnicity, family, religion and lifestyle preferences. This range and variation in
the experiences of baby boomers affect their ability and/or motivation to volunteer.
Thank you for sharing your time, talents, passions and commitment to enhancing
the sense of belonging to our ParkSide community and for
continuing to nurture the spirit of civic engagement in Canada!

You have been essential in helping us to make this difficult time
so much brighter for many seniors in our community!

                                                                                                      9

What is Coffee Talk?
Every Monday, Wednesday & Thursday at 11:00 am
Simply put, it’s a group of people (who don’t even
know each other) that gather on the telephone three
times a week to just chat about all sorts of topics to
help relieve the feelings that isolation and living alone
can bring. The best part? It’s free and all you need is a
telephone to participate! We call you!
Over the past year, the terms social isolation and loneliness have become very real or even
more real for many of us.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOCIAL ISOLATION & LONELINESS?
Social isolation: the lack of social networks, interactions and resources
Loneliness: How someone feels about their social isolation
When COVID-19 hit and social restriction policies came into place, it overwhelmingly
changed the way that we operate in our world. For months, it may have meant complete
isolation. It was the ceasing of all of our meaningful activities that we used to look forward
to attending. And for some, it meant isolation from those we love.
Coffee Talk is for everyone! Each month, we have a variety of interesting topics to start
from and there is no telling where the conversations are going to go from there! One thing
is for sure….you will 100% feel brighter about your day and share some laughs!
It’s a wonderful, supportive group of men and women.

SEXUALITY IN AGING
Birgit Pianosi, Associate Professor, Gerontology
Laurentian University
We don't discuss sexuality enough when considering the
lives of older adults. It's easy to assume that aging brings
dramatic changes and that sexuality is not a topic that
concerns older adults to any great degree. Sometimes,
however, events bring about a dramatic shift in awareness
and understanding. Sexuality is an aspect of human
development often ignored at various stages of life,
especially late life. With the aging of society, increased longevity, improved health, and rising
affluence, the understanding of normal sexual development in aging humans becomes
progressively more important.

Introducing a new Presenter! Mr. Aubrey Millard
Aubrey completed his Bachelors degree at McMaster University and his Masters degree at the
University of Toronto, both in Psychology. He started out as a school psychologist and
psychometrician for the Toronto Board of Education, before going into Guidance work at the
secondary school level. Aubrey has been the Head of Guidance at Peterborough Collegiate and
Vocational School and at Espanola High School. He has worked a session for the Sudbury
Algoma San (where he developed his interest in clinical hypnotherapy), and taught psychology
extension courses for Laurentian University, and Guidance courses for the Ontario Ministry of
Education. As a registered psychologist, Aubrey has taken advanced courses in clinical
hypnotherapy from the Ontario Society for Clinical Hypnosis and the American Society for
 Clinical Hypnosis.
As a naval reserve officer in addition to his shipboard and clearance diving duties, he also
worked with alcohol and substance abuse programs, as well as smoking cessation programs,
at the base hospitals in Halifax and overseas at our bases in Lahr, and Baden in Germany.
He conducted Stress Management programs for the Mississauga Family services for several
years, as well as independent group programs for Quit Smoking and Weight Control.
Since retiring several years ago he and his wife have been living on their 32 sailboat, having
crossed the Atlantic Ocean and sailing northern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea before
returning to sail the east coast from Newfoundland to Honduras and the west coast from Alaska
to Costa Rica. He loves the north and had been living in Elliot Lake the past few years.

                                                                                                    18
WEIGHT CONTROL —Presented by Aubrey Millard

This seminar is intended to give people some strategies for controlling their weight problems.
It will focus on a few psychological strategies using relaxation, mental imaging, and eating
techniques to gain more control over eating habits. This does not advocate any particular diet
system, but is compatible with many weight loss diets or other weight control programs.
When people learn relaxation strategies they can gain more control over their eating and
exercise lifestyles.

STRESS MANAGEMENT—Presented by Aubrey Millard

This three-part program will discuss stress, what it is, what it does to the body, and provide
deep relaxation strategies to effectively deal with stress and its effects. This is not just a
seminar about stress, but a workshop whereby participants will be asked to use progressive
muscle relaxation, breathing techniques, guided mental imagery, and forms of meditation
and self hypnosis during the sessions, and to practice such on a daily basis between each.
All sessions will end with one or more of such relaxation exercises. Each session will review
and build upon the material learned in previous sessions. This program wants active
participants who want to learn and practice stress control techniques not only during this
program, but as part of their lifestyle to effectively manage stress.

MEMBER TESTIMONIAL : BREATHING & BREATHWORK

I am indeed thankful to be part of Parkside Centre Without Walls. Thanks Natalie! I attended
several workshops, exercises and Breathworks.
I have had sleep apnea for several years and I always have a congested nose when I sleep. I
started the program by Anna Le-Grie on Breathworks. The first 2 classes I did not take seriously.
It was not until the third class that I decided to practice what I learned. When I feel anxious,
I do my breathworks. It helps. It got me excited!
I started to apply the breathworks before my sleep at night. I did not use the bi-pap machine.
I fell asleep till the next morning. The sleep was refreshing. I tried without breathworks before
sleep. I woke up several times during the night. I am thankful that I can apply my breathwork in
my sleep as one of my self- care practices during this time of pandemic. ~ M.W.

DANCIN’ FEET IN MOTION
If you are looking for something enjoyable and fun to do in your spare time, try our Line Dance
classes where you will learn new and standard line dances in a comfortable, welcoming,
fun-filled class. Since you dance on your own, line dancing is ideal for singles and for partners of
non-dancers. It's also wonderful for people who want a social activity that doesn't involve
dating, partnering or going to a bar to enjoy! People with two left feet are welcome!
Even though it is still called “Country-Western Line Dancing” opposed to “Traditional Line
Dancing”, it is now modern, urban sophistication, swing syncopations, flowing waltz and
nightclub rhythms, and dances with a Latin flavor. We are still dancing in lines but are enjoying
a large variety of music. Line dancing has evolved to offer everyone fun and enjoyment and will
keep you coming back for more.

bring, call Carol Larocque (Parkside member)

Beyond the Pail: Wild Ideas with Pots and Planters
VIRTUAL PRESENTATION by David Hobson

David Hobson has ink stains on his green thumb! He lives in Waterloo, Ontario, where he loves to
watch things grow — his children, his garden, his friends, and his compost heap (which should
eventually shrink). David was born and raised in Yorkshire, England, but has made Canada his
home. A humorist, storyteller, and photographer, he is a popular speaker at horticultural societies
and gardening clubs, where he shares the humour and passion of a lifelong gardener. For twenty
years he has been the weekly garden columnist for The Waterloo Region Record. His articles have
also appeared in Garden Making magazine, Grand magazine, and Canadian Gardening magazine.

"Beyond the Pail: Wild Ideas with Pots and Planters" is presented by someone who fills almost a
hundred unique and unusual pots and planters each year, everything you need to know for success.
This presentation will cover all aspects of pots, plants, soil, mulch, fertilizer, and water; all with a
dash of humour.

David Hobson shares his photo gallery at https://davegoo.myportfolio.com/ and publishes his blog

Assistive Devices Program FREE ASSESSMENT!
The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care runs the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) to
help people who have long-term physical disabilities get needed equipment and supplies. In
some cases, ADP pays 75 per cent of the cost of items like wheeled walkers or rollators.

Usually, your doctor will refer you to an "authorizer". This is a health care professional registered
with ADP. The authorizer will assess whether you meet ADP funding criteria, measure you for a
wheeled walker and fill in the appropriate form.
