Contact Information 21MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The Environmental Health Australia (Tasmania) Incorporated Strategic Plan (the Plan) has been developed to provide a modern framework to inform our direction as a Board. The Plan identifies our intentions and areas of focus as we work in support of our members to protect health and provide healthy environments for the Tasmanian population. Past achievements have informed activities to be continued, and key themes have been reviewed which will guide our new commitments. The next 12 months will be the advancement of major projects involved with addressing the current and future workforce needs for the profession in Tasmania. In particular a workforce analysis of Environmental Health Officer’s in Local Government and the continued advocacy and development of localised tertiary training for environmental health with the University of Tasmania will be pursued. We as a Board want to ensure that the work we undertake for our members is meaningful. We will seek feedback and input more than ever before and challenge members to actively help EHA (TAS) INC. be the best it can be. Melissa Burn President EHA (Tas) December 2018
1. CONTEXT
Our Challenges
The Board is in a strong position currently with an active and enthusiastic Tasmania-wide
representation, a solid financial position, a positive culture of networking and looking out for
each other, and strong links to the National body.
Internal challenges for the Board include such things as knowledge management, maintaining
Board membership, identifying future leaders and succession planning, risk management and
strategy, managing time commitments and sharing duties, making the most of our influence at
the National level, and environmental scanning to ensure we stay on the front foot with issues
and developments.
External challenges for the Board include the general declining popularity of member
organisations, decline in environmental health students graduating from university degrees,
difficulty in securing sustainable accredited environmental health degrees, narrowing resources
from employers to pay for memberships, PD seminars and participation, increasing our
relevancy with associated high profile organisations, communicating our message, improving
credibility, attracting a more broad membership base, delivering diversified training and
utilising partnerships.
Our Promise to Members
Our vision is that as a Board we;
• Will support the advancement of Environmental Health, and
• Provide a united voice for Environmental Health in Tasmania.
Our mission is to promise to champion our profession’s values and aspirations by;
o listening to and aiming to meet our members needs,
o advocating on behalf of our current and future members to continuously
improve the profession,
o providing opportunities for professional development and networking
o creating a sense of belonging to a professional community, and
o being financially responsible.Our Plan
Our Plan was informed by the consideration of meaningful past and future activities, captured
within the context of 4 elements; Our Core, Our Collaborations, Our Potential and Our
Contributions.
Adapted from ‘the Map of Meaning’
Lips & Morris 2011 www.themapofmeaning.com1Within each element we took a high level long term look at our intentions. We explored the big
picture reasons for being, what is important for our members and the profession, what things
we could do to make the biggest difference and how to continue to make the Board relevant. We
consolidated these ‘ladder to the sky’ concepts into areas of focus which are summarised here.

Doing2. KEY THEMES
Our challenges, broad intentions and focus areas gave rise to the following Key Themes;
A. Making our Voice heard
We acknowledge that frustrations continue due to the invisible barriers between ourselves, the
public, government and the private sector around lack of knowledge of how we contribute to
health and healthy environments in Tasmania. We plan to address this through partnerships,
communication and publicity.
B. Advocating for a Sustainable Workforce and Promoting the Profession
Tasmania does not have enough EHOs. We plan to address this.
C. Supporting the Environmental Health Profession
Maintaining and growing our membership beyond EHOs is recognition of the complex world we
operate in. Being a visible and valuable organisation is as important as being responsible for
building networks to maximise our own sustainability. We plan to address this.
D. Collaborating with Stakeholders
We acknowledge that we can achieve more by understanding and engaging with a diversity of
stakeholders. We can achieve greater strength and collective genius by working more closely
with aligned professions. We plan to address this.
E. Providing Diversified Training Opportunities to Members and Networks
Ongoing training ensures professionalism and currency. We want to provide better training in a
variety of forms to accommodate our members as well as attract a more broad audience. We
plan to investigate this.3. COMMITMENTS
