                       Professional Development Opportunities

Elementary Staff Math Camp
We are excited to announce our Math Summer Camp for all elementary staff interested in digging into our new
math resource Eureka and Zearn. The math camp will be held at DAC 4th Floor on July 31st from 8:00 - 11:00
a.m. Each teacher attending the event will be paid $18/hour to attend.

Come explore the following topics with teachers in your grade across the district:

       ●    Exploring Eureka/Zearn Resources
       ●    Structures to Support Eureka/Zearn Math
       ●    Experiencing Eureka/Zearn Lessons
       ●    Understanding the alignment of LPS Essential Standards & Eureka/Zearn

We are still looking for a few teachers interested in guiding the sessions during Math Camp. Facilitators will
receive $25/hour to help guide the sessions. Please ​SIGN UP TO FACILITATE HERE​, if you are interested

Introduction to National Board Certification
This session will provide an introduction to the process of National Board Certification. Expert presenter
Charlene Steadman will provide an overview of the portfolio entries and testing process. She will also
offer tips for organizing, writing, and reviewing your entries.

2018 Teacher Academy - Northland Summer Externship Experience
To expose Northland teachers to Design Thinking tools to be used in creating authentic business projects
for authentic audiences. To provide a team-based experience for Northland teachers to design, develop
and pitch authentic project ideas to real business partners

                 CANVAS LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TRAINING
The courses listed below will be offered face-to-face for Canvas Basics and Digging Deeper into Canvas
(advanced). Teachers may attend one basic and one advanced class. Each teacher will receive $18 per
hour for each course attended.​ Please sign up to attend the course(s) in MLP.

In addition, Canvas offers online webinars to learn more about the functionality and usage of their
system. Teachers can register for these courses and take as many as interested in taking. The District

PDC will reimburse teachers  for ​up to three registered/attended online courses (one hour each) as shown

3rd Annual Regional Educator’s Conference
On behalf of the 139th Airlift Wing, Missouri Air National Guard we would like to invite you to tour the
base as part of the educator's & counselor's day on Friday July 27, 2018, from 8:00am - 2:00pm. During
your visit to the 139th Airlift Wing, we will provide you with a presentation, a base wide tour, lunch, as
well as a Flight on one of our C-130 Aircraft. One of our missions here at the wing is to build a strong
relationship with the local schools as well as the surrounding communities.

Reading A-Z Training & RAZ Kids (Elementary Only)
Elementary teachers working with Learning A-Z. ​BRING YOUR LAPTOPS TO THE TRAINING.
“Getting to know Raz Plus – Your Path to Blended Reading”
8:00 am – 11:00 am at DAC 408 (Grades K-2)
12:00 pm - 3:00 pm at DAC 408 (Grades 3-5)

Raz Plus for K-2​nd​ grade
Come learn more about Raz Plus. In this session, teachers will learn how to seamlessly navigate our
digital resources to deepen the connection between teacher instruction and student practice. Teachers
will take a deeper look into the resources that support emergent readers with foundational skills such as
Read alouds, Phonics, Shared Reading and more. Additionally, we will look into ways to better manage
student activity in the Reading planet and find out what’s new in 2018-2019.

Raz Plus for 3​rd​-5​th​ grade
Come learn more about new features in Raz Plus that support blended learning. Teachers will get a
chance to see how they can personalize assignments, find resources that align to the common core/21​st
century skills and help students practice their skills and strategies with the annotating tools in their
eBooks. Help yourself get ahead by setting intentions for the next year.

Reflex Webinar Training
Teachers working with Reflex. ​BRING YOUR LAPTOPS TO THE TRAINING.
“Introduction to Reflex”
The Introduction to Reflex training workshop is designed to enable a teacher to get students up and
running with Reflex immediately and to effectively monitor progress and coach students toward fluency.
First, there will be a segment discussing math fact fluency and its importance to student achievement in
math. Then, teachers log into the site to experience a Reflex session as a student and learn to manage
student accounts. Next, teachers will learn how to read and interpret individual and group reports. Last,
the trainer will provide tips and tricks to help teachers effectively coach students towards fluency.

Format:
This 90-minute workshop, typically given via webinar, is delivered by an experienced ExploreLearning
trainer.

            2018 ZooEd
            ZooED ​Meet the [animal] - K-2nd grade teachers​.​ Teachers explore animals through 26 cross-curricular units.
            ELA, social studies, and math activities tie into science experiments and hands-on learning experiences to address
            essential questions like “How do humans and animals depend on each other?” “What kinds of differences and
            similarities can be seen across the animal kingdom?” and “What connections are there between an animal’s
            appearance, lifestyle, and habitat?”

             ​July 30, 9-11 am Room 410

            ZooED ​Manage the [animal] - 3rd-5th grade teachers​. ​In this ​ ​project-based learning experience, teachers
            learn about zoo careers and take on the roles of zookeepers, veterinarians, nutritionists, and educators. Teacher
            teams learn what it takes to feed, care for, create a habitat, and teach others about one of 7 zoo animals.
            Addresses​ essential questions like “What is the purpose of zoos and conservation institutions?” “What do animals
            need?” and “What kinds of careers work with animals, and how do I get there?”

            July 30, 1-3 pm Room 410

            ZooED ​Maintain the [animal] - Middle and High School teachers​.​ Teachers study the work of famous
            geneticists and conservationists and learn about the role of genetics in animal conservation. Teacher teams
            research one of 6 species in the Kansas City Zoo’s collection to develop a Studbook with breeding
            recommendations, then share their work in a documentary filmed onsite at the Zoo.

            August 2, 9-11 am Room 410, for Middle School
            August 2, 1-3 pm Room 410 for High School.

Starting summer of 2016, LPS reinstated teacher summer professional development opportunities with a different format. The offerings in this catalog will serve to replace the former offerings called
Liberty Summer Academy​. The course offerings are based on the PDC Staff Needs Survey asking for differentiated opportunities, and we have scheduled offerings for varied times on the calendar
throughout the summer months for your convenience. Please register in MLP for your classes of interest.
