Language In Worship: Because language has the power to shape our thinking about one another, All Saints Church makes
every effort to bring the language of worship into conformity with the principles of biblical theology that affirm that the
personhood of God embraces all expressions of gender lovingly and equally. Therefore, in our worship, we take our Bible
readings from an inclusive language lectionary, which is often truer to original sources in references to people, and expands
our concept of God beyond exclusively masculine terms. In Prayer Book liturgies we make minimal but symbolically important
changes which denote our commitment to inclusive expression. Some historical texts that are widely known and loved are
left unaltered. The words of the liturgy are from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. The readings are from the New Revised
Standard Version of the Bible, lectionary year C, as well as from The Message, Enfleshed, The Voice, and from Inclusive Hebrew
Scriptures and New Testament published by Priests for Equality.

Assisted listening devices are available at the Welcome table
on the lawn, for use at the 9 & 11:30 a.m. services.

We ask that you extend a respectful courtesy
to others by silencing all cell phones.

repentance and forgiveness, as it is written in the words of the prophet Isaiah:
“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Prepare God’s arrival! Make
the road smooth and straight.’” (Luke 3:2–6)

            Reader 3:
for ourselves. In this Advent season help us to be a part of the peace you

HYMN “There’s a Voice In the Wilderness Crying” Standing — all who are able; everyone sings.

GOSPEL Remain standing. 9:00 Susan Russell
                                                                                            11:30 Alfredo Feregrino
Minister: The Good News of Jesus as written in Luke (3:1–6).
People: Glory is yours, O Christ.
In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, Philip his
brother tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene. In those days, during the
high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, begot of Zechariah, in the desert. John went
through the entire region of the Jordan proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as written in
the words of Isaiah, the prophet: “A herald’s voice in the desert, crying, ‘Make ready the way of our God; clear a
straight path. Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be leveled. The twisted paths will be made
straight, and the rough road smooth–and all humankind will see the salvation of God.’”

Minister: The Gospel of the Savior.
People: Praise to you, O Christ.

Children in kindergarten – fifth grade are invited to the playground for Children’s Chapel.

                                                                                          11:30 Will Gatlin
Minister: Wellspring of Life, we know the kindom of God is always near. At any moment, we may choose
to turn away from what destroys. The seasons will turn. Signs of new life will emerge.
People: May we imagine into being relationships that transform.
Minister: God of Return, you are always calling us back. Back to what we know and believe, but forgot.
Back to the places that need mending. Back to the parts of ourselves we have lost. You call us
away from places costly to our souls.
People: May we follow a path of wisdom, courage and kindness.
Minister: Loving God, we struggle with how to meet the needs of the day while at the same time
envisioning a tomorrow of systemic change. Discern with us how to wisely use our shared
            resources.
People: We pray for your guidance toward what restores, revives, and redistributes.
Minister: Let us confess our sins before God.
                                                Silence is kept.

Minister and People:
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our
whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we
humbly repent. For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that
we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.
Minister: Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen
us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

PEACE
Minister: The peace of Christ be always with you.
   People: And also with you.

Greet one another in the name of Christ.

SANCTUS/BENEDICTUS Remain standing; everyone sings.

—Setting: David Hurd (b. 1950), from The New Plainsong

CONSECRATION Kneeling or standing — all who are able.

Priest: Holy God, known and beyond all knowing, in your image you created us, giving the earth into our
care. In our arrogance, we lost touch with the breath of God within us, with the divinity of the
creation, growing blind to its beauty and deaf to its harmonies. But through Christ, born of a
woman, your deep abiding love reclaimed us and realigned us with the grain of the universe.
On that evening in an upper room, with his friends around him, our brother Jesus blessed the
bread, broke it, and shared it with all who were gathered: This bread is my body, an offering of
God’s love for all. When you eat it, remember me. Taking the cup of wine, he blessed it and
shared it with all who were gathered: This wine is my blood, God’s promise of new life for all.
When you drink it, remember me.
God, in the memory of Jesus who healed people and washed his disciples’ feet, who loved children
and honored outcasts, who fed people and turned water into wine, who died and rose to new and
unending life, we ask that you breathe on this bread and this wine, filling them with the transforming
             power of the cosmic Christ.
Priest and People:
Breathe through us, God, that our bodies, minds, and spirits may be filled with your life-giving
presence. Make us again a holy people, strongly bound to you, firmly rooted in the earth,
with eyes to see all life as sacred. Empower us to spread the light of Christ in our wondrous
                and confusing world. Amen.
16

Priest: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, in the language of your heart, we are bold to say,
Priest and People:

                                                The Art of Listening
                                          January 13, 2022, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., on Zoom
One definition of love is focused attention on the being of another. Through listening to others, we are loving.
We live in a polarized nation when opposing sides can’t or won’t speak to each other, and that sometimes divides families
and friends. Image a scenario where the point of a conversation would be to find common ground even if we disagree.
This training is guided by the statement above about “focused attention”. The session will provide some of the research
about the benefits of listening and then give the participants time to practice the strategies in a safe environment.
Offered by the Leadership Support & Development Committee.
