During the year, Council runs the Schools Calendar
Competition to recognise and celebrate how
educators are actively working with students to make
connections with local action to help sustain our local
environment.
As you can see by the twelve School Sustainability
Champions featured in this calendar, our local
students are leading the way in their everyday
actions. From making reusable bags, participating in
tree planting, installing solar panels, exploring water
re-use, learning how to look after creeks, composting
to reduce food waste, litter reduction activities, and
recycling right, little actions make a big impact!
We can all learn and be inspired all year round by
the School Sustainability Champions featured in this
calendar.

MAY The Hall State School compost food scraps in a number of ways to avoid sending organics to landfill! Each day, students add the school’s
2021 food scraps to a number of compost bins, worm farms and soldier fly farms. Compost is then placed in garden beds and veggie patches
and the ‘worm wee’ from the worm farms is collected and used as a nutrient packed fertilizer for plants.

NOVEMBER Students at St Mary’s have been on a waste reduction mission and recycling right is one of their key actions. Working as part of
2021 Rockhampton Regional Waste and Recycling’s Recycling Hero Schools Program, St Mary’s students have participated in school waste
audits and rolled out a number of actions to minimise waste and ensure the right thing is going in the right bin!
