Taster Day is all about YOU and helping you with the transition to college life next year. Claremont College takes great pride in doing everything to help students reach their absolute potential! It starts from the moment you walk onto our fantastic campus with wonderful facilities. You will see in the picture below I’m sitting with Panda, our college dog who symbolises the friendly, safe and secure environment we provide. Taster Day is designed to give you a real feel for what to expect next year when you join us at Claremont College. From our excellent uniHUB to working alongside our amazing teachers, see what you can be part of in 2021. If you see yourself going off to university or taking on an apprenticeship or traineeship; you have certainly come to the right place. Claremont College helps every student step into an exciting future! You will see first-hand we have wonderful staff at the college who will do everything to accommodate your needs. All our staff are outstanding at what they do and we aim to have you find something that interests you to make your learning exciting. Please enjoy your day and don’t be shy to ask any questions and approach the staff for further information. You will even get to eat some tasty home-made pizza from our wood fired oven in our courtyard. Taster Day Enrolment
Remember the main purpose of the day is to:
• try out a variety of subjects
• find out about options suited to your pathway
• become familiar with Claremont College and
• meet your teachers.
You will participate in 4 sessions on Taster Day.
Complete your personal details at the top of the enrolment form provided.
Read the session descriptors in the program carefully.
Select 4 choices that suit your future pathway in consultation with your
teachers at school.
List your choices in order of preference, and enter them in the box on the
bottom of the enrolment form.
Check you have entered the correct session name and code.
Numbers 5 and 6 are reserve choices, in case we are unable to allocate one of
your first 4 preferences.
Collective school students - hand your completed enrolment form to your teacher.

The summary below will assist in your subject selection for Taster Day.
The number next to a subject listing indicates the level of difficulty.
Level 3 and 4 subjects
• are the highest level at which you can study any subject
• are academically challenging
• require an A, B or C result in the equivalent Australian Curriculum subjects (Maths, English,
Science and History) as prerequisites for Year 11 entry (*a “C” result entry will require
consultation with your teacher)
• have a theory component
• have an externally assessed component – you will need to sit an exam and/or complete a folio of
work
• provide a pathway for entrance into university
• should be explored at least once on Taster Day if you are thinking about university in the future.
Level 1 and 2 subjects
• develop skills and knowledge in an area
• have no entry prerequisites from Year 10
• are general subjects that may follow on from high school studies
• provide the foundation for specific Level 3 subjects
• may be taken in conjunctions with Level 3 subjects
• cover a broad range of abilities
• include practical and applied learning subjects
• use a variety of teaching and learning approaches to suit different interests and preferences.
Vocational Education and Training Programs (VET)
• result in nationally recognised qualifications
• are industry aligned
• focus on real, practical learning
• deliver knowledge and skills valued by employers
• may involve a work placement which uses on-the-job training and assessment
• values previous learning and life experiences
• leads onto further training e.g. TasTAFE courses

English Foundations. Importantly, English provides you with the
literacy tick towards your TCE. Join this workshop with some friends
to learn more and explore your talent.

knowing about what can go wrong
in police investigations and trials,
you will start to understand how our legal system should work.

History is a puzzle. When we study it, facts
can change before our eyes. Mysteries are
explored, new causes revealed and
different perspectives uncovered. Those
who study history should think of
themselves as truth seekers. If you are
interested in history, which history should
you choose to study? Come along and get answers to these
questions. We will test some of these ideas while sampling some
brief activities.13

games, explore how we decide
between right and wrong and begin to
unpack one of the most important and rapidly changing features of
today’s society: technology. Throughout this session you will get a
taste of what you will study in Introduction to Sociology and
Psychology.

subjects. We will also discuss the difference between Level 2 and 3
subjects.

We love children!
This Working with Children course is the
ideal first step for students wishing to
pursue a promising career in child care.
The first few years of a child’s life are the
most formative, so if you are passionate about children, come along
to our session that includes an overview of the course with a
practical activity children would love added to the mixture.

equipment the college has to offer. There are
two different courses, so be sure to ask
questions to ensure you have all you need for an exciting future in the
outdoors.

The Claremont College Defence Force
Cadets program, for students wishing to
enter the Defence Force or emergency
services, is the only program of its kind
offered in Tasmania. This session will
outline what the course is all about, the
selection process involved and the possible
career opportunities that are available after
completing this program. You will also take part in a team building
activity, so make sure you wear comfortable clothing.
