          A STADIUM LIFESPAN
Commerzbank-Arena: Reaching Old Age as a Teenager
Stadia were once buildings for millennia. Now they
are buildings for Millenials. Post-war stadia typically
remained (and many remain) in operation for 50
years or more. More recently, stadia lifespans have
decreased to less than 20 years. Increasing
          stakeholder demands and rising customer
expectations mean that these buildings need
constant upkeep and upgrade. We reflect on the
          success of the Frankfurt’s Commerzbank-Arena
(pictured) – one of the standout stadia of the FIFA
World™ 2006 projects – and explore the key drivers
behind a range of proposed enhancements and
modifications to leep it fit for purpose. Is 13 years
now considered old age for a stadium?
              • Patrik Meyer, CEO, Commerzbank-Arena, Germany

 10.00 THE NEW FAN EXPERIENCE
START-UPS, INCUBATORS AND IMMERSIVE ENGAGEMENT TEST BEDS
The term is frequently applied to any and all
technology installations, but what actually is
a ‘smart stadium’? And how does one
deliver it? In Spain, the Global Sports
Innovation Center by Microsoft has initiated
a new acceleration program dubbed Sport
          Thinkers Smart Stadium to attract
          technology-based startups that will help
transform the stadium experience. In its first
application, the programme is working with Real Sociedad to improve the
facilities of its Anoeta Stadium (pictured) that is currently undergoing
reconstruction. As we delve into the increasingly ‘stage-managed’
production of the matchday experience – from LED lighting, video replays
and audio stings – through to Augmented Reality – what is the expected
          impact on future stadium design?

ON-TIME. IN-BUDGET. TO SPEC. OR NOT?

Once again, high-profile stadia projects are in the headlines.
But for the wrong reasons. Delays. Errors. Cost-overruns.

recent examples to explore the lessons from the project
lifecycle. We’ll identify where things can start to go wrong –
and how best to structure and lead a project team for
             success, not failure. Your panelists:

          Building on Stadium Success
Le Havre AC’s award-winning Stade Oceane opened in
July 2012 and is already undergoing changes and
improvements. This summer 18 private boxes were adapted
so that they convert to hotel rooms on non-matchdays and
a new, 400-capacity restaurant was built in the East stand.
A new training centre is now in construction – scheduled for completion in January 2019.

Following on from last year’s Summit – where
Hertha Berlin explained the issues it faces playing
in the city’s Olympiastadion – the club has
progressed discussions with the city authorities
and has subsequently provided a revised design
for a new, football-only stadium to be built within
the Olympiapark some 300m from the former
Olympic stadium. What are the next steps for this
