HELP US SAVE 4,000 PETS LIKE CHARLIE DURING
THE ASPCA RACHAEL RAY $100K CHALLENGE

Dear Educator,

When AHS rescued Charlie, he was filthy, starving and covered in ticks. Thanks to the help of our
amazing volunteers and medical team, Charlie quickly recovered and now has a loving new home.

Every day, we turn heartbreaking stories of pets like Charlie into happy endings. This summer we’re
striving to create 4,000 more success stories like this as part of the ASPCA’s Rachael Ray $100k
Challenge. With your help, AHS has the chance to win a
$100,000 grant to help us continue the lifesaving programs
and services that benefit amazing pets like Charlie.

The $100K Challenge is a contest in which 50 shelters
across the country compete to break their own records
saving the lives of animals. Throughout the months of
June, July and August 2014, each competing shelter must
save more dogs, cats, puppies and kittens than they did
during the same three months in 2013.

The Arizona Humane Society is up for the challenge --- but we need your help! We are also in the
running for an additional $25,000 Community engagement award and, because our community’s
schools have been so very supportive our efforts over the years, we are asking you to help support us
today. Here’s our very exciting plan!

Within this packet are many adoption-centric activities and worksheets inviting students and teachers
to GET ENGAGED in directly helping our animals to find homes. If your school agrees to engage in one
of the activities herein, or another of your own choosing that is tied directly to helping AHS animals to
find forever homes, we will reward your efforts with the following:

 A hearty SHOUT OUT! to your school on our Facebook page and other social media outlets, with
any photos or video you send along. (Please ensure that any children involved in the photos or
video have a current model release on file.)
 A FREE Assembly Presentation about the Arizona Humane Society for your school, delivered by
        our Education team.
THE ASPCA RACHAEL RAY 0K CHALLENGE TOOLKIT
 A Humane Heroes Award certificate for the school as well as any
        classroom(s), teacher(s) and individual student(s) involved AND a
Paw-It-Forward sign designating the classroom as a Classroom of
        Humane Heroes!
 A HUMANE HEROES INSIDE!! sign for your classroom door, to
tell the world that your classroom is an inspiration to the entire
        school!
 AND --- a FREE CAT ADOPTION certificate! The certificate can be used by the
school for whatever purpose it wishes. Some ideas are silent auctions, PTO events,
fundraisers --- or to reward a special student or teacher! Please note, this is a certificate only
that can be redeemed at our shelter for a cat 5 months of age, or older.

Will you join us? It’s simple! Simply choose one or more of the activities listed within this packet ---
and let us know what your students accomplished. And if you include photos and/or video, all the
better! In fact, if you’re doing something REALLY exciting, let us know in advance and maybe we can get
the media to cover your event or activity, and get your school some PR!

Finally --- WE NEED YOUR VOTE! Won’t you help support our
adoptable shelter pets --- like beautiful Pepperoni, pictured here?

There will be three finalists selected for the Community Engagement
Award based on the results of an online vote from August 15 to August
31, at votetosavelives.org. We ask that teachers help spread the word
and visit www.votetosavelives.org to cast a vote for AHS! You can vote
once a day and we appreciate every one of them --- and then --- invite
all of your friends to do the same!

We genuinely appreciate your support over this summer as we strive to win funds so desperately
needed by the animals in our care. We also invite you to learn more about --- and visit --- one of our
beautiful adoption campuses and be invited to share our playful pet profiles with friends and family or
on Facebook and Twitter.

With our deep gratitude for your participation, we invite you to review the packet and see what
activities may excite and engage your students. An index sheet is included herein and while our ASPCA
Challenge focus is on increasing adoptions by August 31st, with Maricopa County ranking 2nd in the
nation in pet overpopulation, we would be delighted to honor the “thank-you’s” herein, for the
remainder of the school year!

WILL YOUR SCHOOL HELP US SAVE 4,000 PETS DURING
THE ASPCA RACHAEL RAY $100K CHALLENGE

Simply choose one or more of the adoption-centric activities below --- or one of your own choosing,
designed to help increase adoptions at our shelter --- and send us an email at humaneed@azhumane.org
detailing what you did along with emailing any pictures and videos of your efforts. We’ll feature them
on our social media and send your school some other goodies as well! In which of the activities below
will you engage your students between now and August 31st? And perhaps beyond? Activity items may
be faxed, sent, emailed, or dropped off! Activities may be group or individual. ASPCA and AHS logos
may be found at the back of the packet and may be cut out and pasted to any of the activity items.

     Thought Bubbles –
Designed to give homeless animals a “voice” as students decide what a
shelter dog or cat might say to a potential adopter. Fax, send or drop them
off and we’ll find them a home on the kennel card of a very grateful adoptable
                           animal!

     Letter to Adopter –
Students visit our website and find an adoptable animal to feature in a letter
to that animal’s potential adopter. Letters will be attached to the pet’s kennel
                           card.

     Posters –
Students visit our website and find a “shelter buddy” about whom they create
a poster which will be prominently displayed at our adoptions counters!

     Humane Naming Activity –
This activity is designed to discuss the difference between humane names and
names that do not always reflect kindness and respect. Students complete the
worksheet, return it to us, and then check our website over the next few weeks
to see which newly arrived shelter animals have been gifted with the humane
                     names they chose!
THE ASPCA RACHAEL RAY 0K CHALLENGE TOOLKIT
Tag! You’re Adopted! –
Students will create homeward-bound message “tags” for our cat and critter
carriers --- and our adoption dog leashes, designed to announce to the world
that a forever home has been found! And when others see how happy YOU
are to welcome a furry family member, maybe they will do the same!

     Kennel Card Picture Frame –
Students create a “picture frame” for the photos on our kennel cards,
inviting adopters to take a closer look and we place it on the kennel card of
the animal who has been here the longest.

     PSA –
Students write and deliver a PSA for the animals at the Arizona Humane
Society. PSA’s can be videotaped, photographed or perhaps even delivered
                         during morning announcements.

     School Poster/Flyer –
We respectfully request that this be posted in teacher’s lounge areas and, if
appropriate, sent home to parents so that they, too, can participate and
engage their children in discussions about what they are doing to help
                        the animals at AHS.

Kittie Kozies and Kitten Nursery Sweaters –
We have additional adoption-centric, craft based projects which do require
that students acquire supplies. Sweaters are designed to help support the
kittens in our nursery stay nice and warm until they are ready to be put up for
adoption and the kozies are small fleece blankets that greet every kitty turned
into our shelter, when supplies are available. It is a constant that travels with
them throughout all of their time with us. For more information, please email

HUMANE NAMING ACTIVITY
Humane Names are names that treat animals with respect and empathy and compassion. Some names
are inappropriate for animals --- What might they be? How does it make you feel when you hear them?
What are some names that make you feel that the dog, cat or small animal is respected and named
thoughtfully, responsibly and fairly? Names that show we are caring and trustworthy people --- Names
that show we have integrity and empathy and are compassionate global citizens!

Let’s start our list! When we’re done, take this home and check out the adoptable animals on our
website over the next few weeks --- you may see the name you selected --- a thoughtful and Humane
name that will be sure to help our homeless friends find loving, forever homes.

Thanks for being HUMANE! Don’t forget! Check out the adoptable animals on our website every day
but be sure to ask permission from the adult in your home --- in fact, why not ask them to join you!

TAG! YOU’RE ADOPTED! ACTIVITY

We think it is safe to say that all of our shelter animals are eagerly awaiting, what we call, “forever
homes.” To help them along the way and celebrate what we hope will be a swift adoption, won’t you
help to imagine what they might say if they could tell us how happy they are that new Pet Parents
arrived to take them to a new home? If you can help us come up with a few “homeward bound”
messages, we will make sure that these tags are placed on cat and critter carriers or onto dog leashes at
the time of adoption. Ready? What would you say if you were one of our shelter animals and your
“forever family” just showed up to take you home? Fill in the tag and return it to us and we’ll make
certain that it is placed on a carrier or leash! Thanks for making a difference for the animals!
SHELTER BUDDY KENNEL CARD ACTIVITY

The top half of this page shows a sample of
an Arizona Humane Society Kennel Card.
You can also see what the card looks like
when the photo has a GREAT frame!

To the right, you will find a frame template
which can be decorated, cut out --- with the
kitty inside --- and faxed, sent or delivered to
any of our shelter locations. We will cut it
out for you and place it on the photo of a pet
looking for a home! And YOU will know that
your artwork helped him or her to get
adopted!

So get out your crayons and markers and
start creating the best frame ever for a
shelter pet! What should you write?
ADOPT ME TODAY! Is a good start!

All of the animals at our shelter say THANK
YOU for helping us to find forever homes!
STUDENT PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ACTIVITY

A very effective and rewarding way to engage students in
sharing the message of animals who are looking for homes is to
invite them to write a PSA. This is a wonderful group, or
individual, activity and, best of all --- the PSA might find a home
during morning announcements! If your school engages
students in this manner --- send us the script and a few photos
or video clips and you may find them reflected on our
Facebook page! It is our further hope that this activity may tie
in with more than a few common core standards.

There are numerous examples of student driven PSA’s on
YouTube and other social media outlets and animals are a very
popular topic. Public service announcements (PSAs) are brief, but to the point and are typically framed
within a range of 15 to 60 seconds; sometimes a bit longer….but not much!

In this case, we do hope that your school will host the PSA’s on morning announcements, but traditional
PSA’s are utilized across all media outlets from TV to radio to now --- social media.

The purpose of a PSA is to afford non-profit organizations to draw local attention to their campaigns,
events or, simply, to highlight their mission --- and there is usually a desired outcome, be it funds,
attendance or, in our case, ADOPTIONS!

PSA content is designed to tie the “cause” to the
community with engaging language and, occasionally,
corresponding photos or videos, if TV is the venue.
Following is a good gauge of how long your PSA will be
based on the number of words used:

     25 – 30 words will take 10 seconds
     45 – 50 words will take 20 seconds
     60-75 words will take 30 seconds
     120-150 words will take 60 seconds
While professional PSA’s have clear guidelines for submission to TV and Radio, which should be
determined prior to PSA development, for school purposes, here are a few general tips for students who
are writing PSA’s :

 If it is handwritten, print in block letters and at a size that is big enough to read easily. If on
computer, use a clear, non-fancy font set at a letter size that the reader can easily see.
 Keep your PSA content to one sheet of paper, if possible and use spacing between sentences
that allows the reader to see each line clearly.
 Always include the Who, What, When, Where and Why in your content. And if there are specific
dates and times, there is a standard order for those details: time, date and place. For example:
“At 11:00 am, on Saturday, August 16th, the Arizona Humane Society will be hosting a special
adoption event at its valley-wide locations. The shelter is full to brimming and the goal of
Saturday’s event is to find loving homes for every cat, dog and critter in residence.“
 Always close your PSA with information as to how the listener can get in touch with the
organization you are promoting. For example, “You can reach the Arizona Humane Society by
calling 602.997.7585 or visit its website at www.azhumane.org .“

Don’t forget to send us photos and videos of your student’s work so that we can acknowledge them on
our social media outlets!

TEACHERS --- PARENTS --- WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The Arizona Humane Society is competing with fellow
shelters across the country in an effort to win funds to
support our shelter animals. With a $25,000 community
engagement prize at large, it’s time to pull out all the stops

August 31st! Each member of the community who takes
the time to cast an online vote for AHS will help us to
qualify! AND --- to help us even more --- cast one vote
                                           each day!

Won’t you take a moment to vote? And, if you are a
Facebook, Twitter or other social media fan, perhaps share
this link with friends and family.

As a thank you to schools which participate, we are offering one FREE CAT ADOPTION certificate per
school which can be used for silent auctions, PTA or other school or community events --- and much
more! All you have to do is let us know how your school participated, take a few photos and send them

us to win the community engagement prize! We appreciate your participation! Remember --- voting is
