Dining and Events Committee Written by Mary Ann Carr • Photos by Sue Vogel We welcome December, the last month of 2021. Looking back, this past year was one of transition. We slowly but surely emerged from the physical and emotional Lockdown of 2020. Our hearts are lighter; our spirits brighter! While taking necessary precautions, especially getting our vaccinations and boosters, we feel so much safer taking part in our favorite activities with our families, friends, and neighbors. We Greenbriar residents once again are able to enjoy our many amenities as we return to our very special lifestyle. Our Pub (with a 90 person capacity) continues to provide a favorite gathering place Our happy ambassador Gambel NGXB entertains residents at the Pub for NGXB at the Pub for friends to meet and mingle. A menu for fall Speciality Drinks is displayed on the bar, including the Candy Corn Martini. In addition, live entertainment has returned for our listening pleasure. Back by popular demand, singer Gerard Esposito performed in the Pub on October 26 and November 30, and NGXB entertained us on the piano on November 9. Residents are also taking advantage of Luigi’s Express, our newest and extremely popular amenity. They continue to add menu items per residents’ requests, including Cuban sandwiches, chili, tossed salads and chef salads. Also offered are daily and weekly specials, all of which can be picked up or delivered to our Residents singing the Star Spangled Banner at the Pub Pub/restaurant area. With all safety precautions (proof of vaccinations, temperature checks, and mask requirements) in place, many of our clubs have been able to sponsor concerts and plan their holiday parties in our Ballroom. Residents were entertained by the Rave-Ons, a Simon and Garfunkle tribute duo, and the Jersey Four. Looking ahead, on Wednesday, December 15, the Glee Club and the Jukebox Band will host a holiday concert in the Ballroom. In addition, we are eagerly anticipating our BYOE New Year’s Eve Gala, which will include an Open Bar, Champagne Toast and DJ to welcome in Alicia with Kimmy, Maegan, Janine and Nicole the year 2022. ...Continued on next page 8 Greenbriar Oceanaire • december 2021

Golf Advisory Committee Written and submitted by Rich Wortman We are now entering our winter phase here at Greenbriar, as closing the course on Christmas Eve approaches. 10:00 shotgun starts began on November 9th. A large number of players continued to play through the month, taking advantage of mild weather and course conditions. Superintendent Steve Juhring and his Indigo Golf staff are winding up their fall projects, including aeration of the fairways and tees. The Meticulous maintenance staff has completed cutting the brush in all the basin areas, giving the course a different appearance. The Golf Advisory Committee has been busy interviewing Columbus Day Tournament Mixed Division prospective members to fill the expiring terms of six members. Winning Team The candidates approved by the Board will be announced (L to R) Barry Zielinski, Jeri Zielinski, shortly and the entire 2022 Committee will be seated at the next Sally Ann Quigley, Jerry Quigley meeting. The Committee is busy with the discussion of course renovation projects and a reorganization of communication methods. The goal is to streamline and improve how the Committee effectively distributes golf information to the membership as well as residents. The tournament season concluded with the Columbus Day tournament. Though the results were available by press time and announced in the November Beacon, photos were not available. See the pictures included with this and next month's articles to view the winners. The weather might have cooled a bit, but the Hole-in-One pace continues to stay hot with three more! Orysia Marino scored her ace on October 31 on Hole 16, followed by Rick Pat Galante at hole 12 on November 4 celebrates his third Greenbriar ace... Dove on the same hole on November 2. On November 4, Pat Galante enjoyed his third Greenbriar Hole-in One on Hole 12. Congratulations to all! We ask that our members contribute to the Holiday Golf Staff Appreciation Fund. This is a wonderful way to show appreciation to our golf staff at this time of the year. Donations are to be placed in the GAC mailbox near the Concierge desk in the clubhouse by December 15. Please make out checks to GOCA GAC. All residents are reminded that after the course closes for the winter, the cart paths can be used for walking and biking. Please be aware that maintenance vehicles may also be on the paths. Golf Tip For many of us, golf is, or will be, in the “off season.” It is a suitable time to consider areas of improvement to work on for 2022. One general principle that works on all shots is to develop a way to make solid contact. It sounds obvious, but if we channel A Halloween hole in Rick Dove is happy about one for Orysia Marino his November 2 ace on all our effort into that one goal, there will be effective results. on the 16th hole. hole 16! ...continued on the next page 12 Greenbriar Oceanaire • december 2021

Greenbriar Oceanaire Women’s Club Article written by Norma Couvelha and Susan Bariletto It’s never too early to get into the holiday spirit at Greenbriar. After all, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. It’s the one time when we all act a little nicer, smile a little easier and cheer a little more. We are the people we always hoped we would be and find ways to make life better for those around us. During this season of giving, let’s not forget to take the time to slow down and enjoy the simple things. Watch “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Fix yourself a cup of hot cocoa and read “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” It’s never too early to mark your 2022 calendar with dates for our WC meetings; they are on the 4th Thursday of each month. You’ll be able to meet new friends and greet old friends too! Our first three meetings for 2022 will be afternoon meetings held at 1:00PM. Hope to see you there. Arts & Crafts Club Written by Jo Meinhart Who doesn’t love the beautiful colors of autumn? We celebrated in October by making a pumpkin fall centerpiece. Our teacher, Benita Cardaccio, provided each participant with a small pumpkin, fall leaves and a scarecrow. Our task involved simply cutting out the center of the pumpkin, inserting a Styrofoam piece to hold the flower stems and then inserting the decorative items. In November, we changed pace a bit and our teacher Cindy DeVries presented how to make homemade greeting cards and gift tags. Each of us was given three options to pick from. First option was making two greeting cards and 3 gift tags for Christmas. Second option consisted of two cards with Hanukkah being one of them and 3 snowy gift tags. Third option was two larger sized cards. A few years ago we had a teacher demonstrate this and card-making was very well received. At that time we invited someone outside the community to teach us. This time our teacher, Cindy, is a relatively new GO resident and graciously offered to provide instruction on making cards and tags. Her work prep for each of us was organized and amazing. She provided an assorted array of stamps, card stock, ink pads and decorative items. Our instruction began with making gift tags and proceeded to making two greeting cards. It was intricate but fun. Everyone left having such crafty items to send or use for the holidays. Our December craft will be stitchery taught by Lori Groveman. We will also have a celebration of the holiday season with cookies, coffee and tea. Please be advised of the change of date to December 7, and also know that for this year the cookies will be supplied. We at Arts and Crafts want to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday and we hope to see you in the New Year! 26 Greenbriar Oceanaire • december 2021

Take a Holiday Health & Fitness Club from Falls and Written & submitted by Walt Kaczka & Tom Robinson Unwanted Guests COVID-19 - the Unwanted Guest Great progress is being made in the war against COVID-19. Remember how everything was shut-down this time last year? This success is due to effective vaccines and boosters. However, COVID-19 remains a continuing problem with increasing numbers of breakthrough cases, mostly due to the delta variant. The safety practices to stop/slow the spread are still needed (masks indoors, social distancing, handwashing/sanitizers, and temperature scans). We don’t know everyone’s vaccination status, and others have stopped wearing masks indoors, so even though you are fully vaccinated, you can still contract COVID. All the vaccines provide great protection (80-90%) from serious infection, hospitalization, and death, but none offer 100% protection, hence the breakthrough cases. Each person’s vaccine immune response varies, (not everyone has 90% immunity). Natural immunity (people who had COVID), and vaccine immunity decline over time. Boosters strengthen the immune system. SARS CoV-2 will stick around until we reach herd immunity. It may become endemic, lingering in the environment, but manageable with vaccinations, yearly like the influenza virus. Virologists, infectious disease doctors, public health doctors and our great health care professionals continue to fight the good fight. The sources of this information can be found on the Health & Fitness Club webpage - https://mygocc.com/health-fitness/ So, this holiday season as we gather with our loved ones, do all you can to keep them safe by not letting COVID, the Unwanted Guest, into your house. Do Nothing…But Have Fun!!! Written by Dolores Wojcik The month started out with one of our favorite pastimes – eating lunch! We went to the Waterside Bar and Grille overlooking the Toms River. The view as well as the food, was delightful. Next we took a ride to Cape May to have a very nice lunch at the Lobster House. After lunch the cars split up. One group took a ride to Sunset Beach and then walked through the Cape May Shops and ended up with a walk to Congress Hall. Back in the car they drove over to Wildwood Crest and drove along the coastline into Wildwood and made their way onto the Parkway for the journey home. The other group went on to the Cape May Zoo where they spent an enjoyable afternoon visiting all the animals. Come join us at our next meeting to plan activities for the new year. The meeting is Tuesday, January 18 at 2 pm in our usual meeting room, the 2nd floor west wing card room. Hope to see you there! On behalf of all the Do Nothing Club members we would like to wish all of our Greenbriar neighbors a happy and healthy New Year.
