Parish Meetings

We had two Parish wide meetings in January to discuss important
events and business with the congregation. The meetings took place
in Otey Hall and were also streamed.

On January 23rd, Rusty presented the results of the feasibility study
for a capital campaign to improve our parish facilities. In addition to
the presentation, parishioners were able to voice their concerns and
ask questions both in person and online.

Even though the 2022 heArt and Soul Women’s Retreat has been
cancelled, there is still the opportunity to go to Camp McDowell February
24-26 for a weekend getaway, and several ladies have already signed up.
There is no agenda, though morning and evening prayer, and Eucharist
on Sunday will be offered.

Some of us will be walking and hiking while others may be reading and
resting. We can have our meals together in the dining hall or you can
prepare your own in the cabin. There is a common kitchen and gathering
area in the cabin, and each bedroom has its own connecting bathroom.

The cost:
Single Room $120/night
Double Room $70/night
Each Meal $9
Please let Katie Faulkner know if you have dietary restrictions.

Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are offered on Friday and Saturday. Only
Breakfast is offered Sunday. It is fine if you choose to bring your own food
for any of the meals. Please let us know which meals you would like to
have with the group in the dining hall. This allows the staff at Camp
McDowell to prepare accordingly.

Wanna Getaway? We need to know no later than Tues February 15th.
Please contact Monna monna@stpaulsfranklin.com or Katie at
peppyf@comcast.net.

Make checks payable to “St.Paul’s.”
Leave the checks in Monna’s mailbox at work.

Our annual “Seekers” Class will begin on Sunday, February 27. This is
traditionally a class given for those adults who wish to join the church
through Confirmation or Reception. However, please know that all are
welcome, especially current congregants of St. Paul’s who would like a
refresher course.

We will look at church subjects such as worship, church history, and
Episcopal theology. The course will last six weeks with an additional
post-Easter roundtable discussion class on April 24. We will meet each
Sunday at 10:00 in our Barnabas annex which is the building located
behind the church on Fair Street.

The diocesan bishop will then make his annual visit to St. Paul’s for
Confirmation on May 1. If you have any questions please contact Rusty
via email: rusty@stpaulsfranklin.com or by phone 615-790-0527.

Lent - What Is Lent? 10

Lent was originally a period of preparation for baptism. Catechumens
fasted and prayed during their instructional period just as Christ did in the
wilderness prior to the beginnings of his ministry.

Eventually everyone participated in Lent. The early church Lent as the
seson where we, as Christians and as people of God “returned to normal
human life.” The word lent comes from an old English word meaning
“spring.” Lent was seen as a season of light, joy, and renewal because it
was the season of returning to God as the source and center of people's
 lives.

Lent began and still is a season that calls us back to our senses, back to
God and back to life. We invite you to participate in a holy lent. It may be a
season to give some things up and do some needed spring cleaning, but
we hope it's a season where we turn our attention to the things that
ultimately matter, foremost, God the giver and redeemer of life.

Ash Wednesday: The Beginning of Lent

 Ash Wednesday Liturgy
“Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.”

For many Christians around the world, Ash Wednesday marks the
beginning of Lent, a season of personal repentance and spiritual renewal
which ends with Easter Joy. On Ash Wednesday all of us are invited to
receive the imposition of ashes – the sign of the cross in ashes on our
forehead – the same place where we were marked as “Christ's own
 forever” in baptism.

As we receive the ashes, we hear “Remember that you are dust and to
dust you shall return.” It may sound harsh, but it is a powerful outward
sign of our humble beginnings and common end. Ash Wednesday helps
us remember “who” we are and “whose” we are.
Lent - What Is Lent? 11

 What's Different During Lent?

The liturgical color you will see used for the season of Lent is purple
because it is considered a penitential. The music you will hear in services
during the season of Lent is typically mellow and non-celebratory
sounding in nature. You will not see any flowers on the altar during Lent.
You should not hear any “Alleluias” during the season of Lent. We wait
for Easter to shout them loud and clear!

Taizé Prayer Service
The Daughters of the King are sponsoring a Taizé Service on Friday,
March 4 at 6:30 PM.

All are invited to spend 60 minutes in an evening of meditative prayer.
The practice of Taizé Prayer was begun in Taizé, the Burgundy region
of France, during World War II. The prayer service is characterized by
repetitive, mantra-like songs (such as “Jesus, Remember Me”),
prayerful silence, and short scriptural readings.

These elements guide the focus of the prayer in a warm candle-lit
environment. Parishioners, friends, family, neighbors and the general
public are invited. Come and experience this peaceful service.

EYG
EYG, or Episcopal Youth Group, is open to all youth grades 6-12.
EYG meets in Barnabas on Sundays from 5-7pm.
Youth Sunday School meets at 10am in Barnabas.

EYG is back in full swing this year! We have a number of great events
coming up this spring, and I am excited to announce that we will be
having the Mardi Gras Pancake Supper on Tuesday, March 1st! This
event helps us offset some of the cost of our trip to Mountain T.O.P.,
and it is a great opportunity to get to know the youth group! The
Pancake Supper will take place from 5:30-7:00pm in Otey Hall on
Shrove Tuesday.

Additionally, we are in need of volunteers to provide meals at a few
of our upcoming EYG meetings! If you feel called to bring dinner on
a Sunday night, please use the link below to sign up:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4aaea922a0ffc07-january1

Finally, we need folks to help out with Youth Sunday School. This is a
great, low-impact way to get involved with the Youth Group. If you’re
interested in volunteering your time, please contact
nic@stpaulsfranklin.com.

YOUTH CONFIRMATION

Youth Confirmation classes have begun. All participants gather with
other youth at our Episcopal Youth Gathering (EYG) each Sunday at
5:00. Dinner will be served around 5:30. The groups will then
separate with the Youth Confirmation class meeting in Otey Parish
Hall.

If you have any questions please contact Libby, Nic, or Rusty.

Recycling Program
Will Boggs, Fred Warner, Gerald Hancock, Ellen Kirk and Lois Nagy, with
the help of Father Rusty and Shannon, have established a committee to
recharge our recycling efforts. During the last year, several of us have
continued to recycle paper, cardboard, tin, aluminum, glass and plastic
from the various activities here. In the past we attempted to recycle items
through the city service but were told that they won’t be able to pick
those items up curbside with our trash because we are considered
 “commercial”.

We need the help of parishioners who would be willing to take a blue bag
(or several!) with them to recycle with their own household recyclables
when they come to church. People can sign up for a regular, recurring
day (e.g. once a month) or take a blue bag randomly when they see it is
full. The paper will continue to be collected in the large, gray bin in the
workroom next to Shannon’s office and there is a large, green bin for
glass in Otey kitchen. We will post lists of what can be recycled in the
blue bags….the requirements change according to what markets are
open to the city and/or county. The county also has a more detailed list
 posted on its website www.williamsoncounty-tn.gov.

 What can be recycled:
   Plastics 1 and 2
Paper: office paper, books (paperback and hard cover), paperboard
   boxes (these “tear white”),
   Aluminum cans
   Tin/steel cans
Cardboard: corrugated and thin brown boxes (e.g. cereal and cracker
   boxes…these “tear brown”)

For more information, please contact Lois Nagy (lois@nagy.com or 615-
804-1203) or any member of the committee. St. Paul’s and the
environment are grateful for your help.

Stephen Ministry

Our current environment has brought emotional changes to all of us.
Our lives have been changed by COVID-19, and it may be a while before
we return to anything close to what we were used to before the
pandemic. Stephen Ministry does not have the visibility and access to
the community and Church family because of the current situation,
which makes it more difficult to identify people who need someone to
listen to their concerns and help them through their crisis. Parishioners
in general, have not been as active outside their own immediate family
or work environment as perhaps they were, which makes it more
difficult for them to know about people who need a Stephen Minister.
Yet there are people who are struggling through the isolation and the
new “normal”. Stephen Ministry is alive and active at St. Paul’s. We are
constantly trying to reach out to individuals who might feel lonely,
frustrated or depressed do to the isolation this pandemic has created.
We are available to meet by Zoom, Facetime, email, messages, and cards
until the guidelines allow us to meet in person.

If you could benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister, or if you know of
someone who could, please let us know. We can always be reached
through a confidential email – sm@stpaulsfranklin.com. Monna Mayhall
or the Stephen Ministry Leader, Fred Warner, can be reached through St.
Paul’s Episcopal Church office at 615-790-0527. Thank you in advance for
 reaching out to us.

May the peace of the Lord be with you.

The Bicentennial Society
                           Celebrating St. Paul’s 200th Anniversary

In 2017 the Bicentennial Society was formed to plan the commemoration of the church’s 200th
anniversary in 2027. After hitting the pause button in 2020, we are back at work. The Society is
laying the groundwork for the ongoing work of various committees. To date, we are planning a
year-long celebration for 2027 with different monthly themes. We will involve the entire
Franklin community in plans leading up to our Bicentennial year. Each of the next six years will
be focused on specific details of the master plan for St. Paul’s 200th Celebration.

If you’d like to take part in this historic event, please join the Bicentennial Society today. Your
$1,000 pledge—due in 2027—will help fund the bicentennial and its ancillary events. To join,
visit stpaulsfranklin.com and click “give.” Committees are also looking for help with community
 relations, event planning, and technology.

A special reprint of The History of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, A Good Story of
Saints and Sinners, (pictured above) is being undertaken by the church's
Historic Committee. Books are for sale online, priced at $25, for parishioners
who might have missed out on the 2016 release. There is a limited supply of 100
 copies.

"We are very excited about offering this important book again," said Melanie
Lampertz said. "In the past several months, our Historic Committee has
reengaged with focus on more research and story about St. Paul's nearly 200
years in Franklin. "Although many families were able to purchase a copy when
the book was released in 2016, there are so many new people who have joined
our church family, that we wanted to make sure the book was available,
especially as we approach our Bicentennial in 2027." For more information, visit
the www.stpaulsfranklin.com, or stop by the Church office to pick up a copy.
 They make wonderful gifts!

Read the story written for the Williamson Herald in 2016 when the book was
first released during St. Paul's 189th birthday celebration: Unveiling – Three
centuries of story in spirited style.

church office to be placed on a Sunday Rotation Schedule. Let us know if

Christian Formation Volunteers for Children and
 Youth
If you are looking for a way to help out while growing spiritually yourself,
we have the perfect job for you! We need volunteers for Christian
Formation for our Children and Youth programs. Both programs are
designed so that volunteers can rotate. Even if you think you can only
volunteer a few Sundays during the school year, that’s great! Both
programs offer ways to really engage with our young people without
the adult volunteer having to do the planning. We will hand you what
you need, so all you do is spend some time with the lesson in
preparation for your class-what a deal! Working with children and youth
of St. Paul’s in this setting is incredibly rewarding for the volunteer! If
you think you’ll have some time to commit to helping with this
important ministry-or if you have any questions-please e-mail Libby
(Children’s Ministry) libby@stpaulsfranklin.com or Nic (Youth Ministry)
 nic@stpaulsfranklin.com.

 Ushers for all services needed
If you are interested in being an usher for one of our three Sunday
services (8am, 10am and 6pm), please let us know by contacting the
office (shannon@stpaulsfranklin.com). A training class will be offered on
what to expect and how to handle each situation.

 Holy Eucharistic Visits
If you are still staying home, taking precautions for your continued
health and safety, unable to return to in-person worship at St. Paul’s, you
can have communion brought to you. If you would like Holy
Communion brought to you, please let us know, and we can schedule a
time for someone to visit you. If you wish, the Eucharistic Visitor could
remain outside your house, whether that be at your front door, back
door, porch, patio, or other place outside you choose. The Eucharistic
Visitor would wear a mask and gloves, and would offer Holy Communion
in one kind only – bread.

If you have questions or if you would like to schedule a Eucharistic Visit,
you can contact Monna Mayhall at monna@stpaulsfranklin.com or 615-
 790-0527.
