FOREWORD At the midway point of the 10 year A Better Start programme in Blackpool it seemed an appropriate time to reflect on what the programme had achieved and the learning it has provided to set the scene for the second stage of the programme. It is important to recognise the contribution of the Blackpool partnership in getting to this stage. The willingness of professionals to look at their practice with new eyes and work with parents and the community to ensure the services are delivered in a way that achieves the greatest impact for our families. To the community who have taken this programme to its heart and given of their time to make their voices heard and understood. To the partners, professionals, volunteers and community members and team at the Centre for Early Child Development, who have the unenviable task of keeping the partnership on track, a massive thank you for all that you’ve done to make the future better for Blackpool children and families. Five years ago I never thought we would have achieved so much. We had a joint vision when we started this journey. That vision hasn’t changed, we wanted to break the intergeneration cycle of poor outcomes for Blackpool children and to do that we all need to help reduce the stressors such as mental ill health, domestic and substance abuse as well as social isolation for parents and care givers and help them build their capacity and capability to parent ...we still do. We also know that the environment we want for our children has to change which is why the work with parks and open spaces has been so important also, that everyone needs to understand the Brain science and why the 1001 days are so important in building the future adult. How we talk to each other is also important and never more so than during this pandemic. Learning about how experiences in early life impact on us throughout our lives and how we can ameliorate some of the poor outcomes is at the heart of what we all do. As I write this the situation for some families is worse, the world has been hit by a pandemic and it has changed our lives in ways we never thought possible. People have lost their jobs, we’re talking about Holiday Hunger, children have had their education disrupted and none of us know what the future will bring. However, what I’m hearing from partners is Kindness Matters, Corona Kindness, Be Kind. Never has the work of the Blackpool Better Start partnership been more important than it is now and never before has it been as important to support families through this difficult time. This paper provides an overview of the work undertaken during the first 5 years of Blackpool Better Start (BBS) and the priorities for the remaining 5 years of the programme. Thank you all Yours Merle Merle Davies Director, Centre for Early Child Development
