     1. Introduction

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship Scheme was established in 1998. Phase I was
completed in 2012. It provides an average of 27 scholarships each year for local1 and Mainland
students to pursue first degree programmes in the eight UGC-funded institutions2 and The Hong
Kong Academy for Performing Arts. The scholarship supported each student for a period of three
     years.

To complement the new academic structure for senior secondary and higher education, Phase II
of the Scholarship Scheme starting from the academic year 2012/13 will run for a period of five
years. Three scholarships will be awarded to local students and one to Mainland students for each
of the nine institutions. The scholarship will cover the student’s four years of academic and
     living expenses.

Scholars are chosen by their respective tertiary institutions on the basis of outstanding academic
ability as well as their community service record and other talents. Renewal of the scholarship
depends on the level of the student’s performance.

Applicants should apply directly through their universities / institutions. Successful applicants
under the Scholarship Scheme will be named Jockey Club Scholars. They are expected to join
and participate in activities and community services organized by The Jockey Club Scholars
Alumni Association, a not-for-profit organization. The Alumni Association aims to build a strong
network of Scholars who can make good use of their diverse backgrounds and expertise to serve
the community. These Scholars share the Club’s philanthropic values and its desire to serve as a
Force for Good in society, and are actively involved in community services through the Alumni
     Association.
