This Olympic moment brought to you by . . .
As we approach the XXIX (that’s 29, for those of you who don’t speak
Roman numerals) Olympiad in Beijing, China, the world holds its
collective breath. Controversy and protest have followed the lead up
to this year’s summer games. Of course, controversy and protest are
nothing new to the Olympics. There have been boycotts; there have
been cancellations and who can forget about Hitler himself serving
as host for the 1936 games in Berlin. Out to prove his theories of the
superiority of the Aryan race, Hitler was repeatedly shown up by “non-
Aryan” athletes. In particular, African-American track and field star
Jesse Owens’ winning four gold medals.

Despite the headaches and heartaches, potential host cities are
prepared to spend billions to build massive stadiums, expo-
sition halls and small cities to house the teeming throngs of
athletes, coaches, support staff and fans attending the games.
Beijing’s build-up to this year’s games and the related con-
struction projects have often been cited as the principal reason
for high steel prices and short, world-wide supplies over the
past decade. For China, it’s a chance to show the world what
they’ve achieved in reaching a lofty position as cultural and
more importantly, economic powerhouse.

Politics and economics aside, the Olympic Games have often
served to bring together nations, raise spirits and inspire mil-
lions. Along with the grandeur there has been no short sup-
ply of the unusual or humorous that has been spawned by or
around the Games.

was the 400-metre run in which the US winner was accused of
interfering with the British runner. Part of the problem was the
different definition of interference under British and US rules.
The race was re-run, but the Americans refused to participate.
The British runner won by running around the track on his own
because three of the four original runners had been Ameri-
can.

These games were the first to include winter events. There were
four figure skating events contested. However, theses occurred
months after the other events.

The 1912 Summer Olympics were celebrated in Stockholm. For
the first time, competitors in the games came from all five conti-
nents symbolized in the Olympic rings. Also for the first time since
1896, all athletic events were held within a reasonably short time
span of about one month, from late June to late July. It was also
the last time that solid gold medals were awarded; modern med-
als are usually gold-coated silver. The 1912 games saw the first
use of electric timing devices and public address systems.

While each Olympiad has its unique and unexpected stories,
there are a few stories that stand out from the early years:

On 24 May, we all gathered on Antwerp’s Linkeroever (Left
bank) where we had organized our internal Seatrade volley-
ball tournament.

Triton had sent two teams and Groningen brought one team to
compete against our Antwerp star team. For the first time we
also had a mixed team of Antwerp, Leer and Groningen which
seemed an unbeatable combination!

As you all know, Groningen and Triton usually have it easy
against us, but this time we could surprise them with a brand
new team. Three matches later it was clear: Antwerp had won
all their matches and became proud winner of this year’s tour-
nament closely followed by the mixed team. Third place was
for Groningen, and fourth and last in line was Leer.

After all the hard work we were invited to have dinner in the
centre of Antwerp, and following a very nice meal we decided
to go for a final drink in town.

Some say, that Antwerp, Groningen and Leer are very different;
however, at the end of the night we could say that this is based
on incorrect facts!

Seatrade 10 years in South Africa

On 1 April 2008 Anlin Shipping (PTY) LTD was 10 years old.
To commemorate this milestone, a function was held with the
Anlin/Seatrade clients in attendance. Marnix and Irma van
Overklift attended the function and celebrations on behalf of
Seatrade. At the function Anlin’s Anton du Preez delivered the
following address:

“It is true what they say – Time flies when you’re having fun.

Looking back on the past 10 years one realises that certain
things are still the same as they were in year one but that a
number of things have changed over time. There were many

Seatrade introduced the first specialised reefer liner service
for fruit shipments from South Africa to the United Kingdom
and Europe in 1998. We started by shipping 240,000 pallets
in year 1 and managed to peak with 420,000 pallets in 2004.
Over the 10 years we shipped 3.1 million pallets with 988 sail-
ings to various destinations worldwide.

I am particularly proud of the fact that we still have most of the
clients that we started with in 1998. Over time we were able
to grow with our clients. Our sincere thanks to all our clients
for their loyal support.

My personal thanks to the Anlin Staff (some of which have
been with Anlin from day 1 for their hard work and loyalty. We
make a great team and it is a pleasure to work with you all.

We look forward to the next decade.”
