connections to nature and an abundance of soul-stirring
experiences. The three island areas of Dare County’s
Outer Banks (see map on left) span more than 100 miles,
so it’s easy to find your own stretch of sand even on the
busiest weekend. If you’re new to what many fans of
the area have affectionately nicknamed the “OBX,” you
can expect a mix of beautiful small towns and maritime

Few places in America evoke a more powerful sense
of nostalgia than Cape Hatteras, which inspired the
creation of this country’s first National Seashore. The
Outer Banks has a legacy of charting the course of
history, not following in its footsteps. There are three
National Park sites within a few minutes of each
other on this chain of islands that many consider
the front porch of North Carolina. Cape Hatteras
National Seashore opened in 1953 to provide
recreational access for the public and to protect
pristine nature for all to enjoy. Going further back,
Orville and Wilbur’s historic first flight happened
near Kitty Hawk in Kill Devil Hills, at what is now YOUR
Wright Brothers National Memorial. And then the OBX GEAR,

252-564-7222THE PLACE MAKES THE PEOPLE. THE PEOPLE MAKE THE PLACE. The Outer Banks has a tradition of welcoming travelers from all over the world. The towns and villages we cherish were born out of the calling that families, explorers and seekers of personal freedom have answered throughout time. We welcome those who’ve never quite felt at home anywhere else. The OBX is a work of art and it continues to evolve with each new visitor. The irony of Outer Banks culture is that it is so deeply rooted, while wind and water move the land around us every single day. To be on the Outer Banks is to recognize something bigger than self. There’s a harmony between people and place, place and people. It’s real and lasting. We invite you to come and share in our community’s journey.
