LiverpoolParish www.livpc.co.uk @LiverpoolParishOpening Greeting
The bell rings and we stand, as we are able:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
The Celebrant introduces today’s service. This is followed by the first element of
the Annual Meeting, the election of Churchwardens.
Confession
The Deacon invites us to confess our sins.
Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess
that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not
loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neigh-
bours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help
us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we
may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God.
Amen.
We receive an absolution, assuring us of God’s forgiveness
When Sunday School is meeting, a prayer is said with our young people at this
point before they leave for their session.
The Gloria and Collect
We say together:
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship
you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of
God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you
are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you
alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the
glory of God the Father. Amen.
2Merciful God, teach us to be faithful in change and uncertainty, that trusting
in your word and obeying your will we may enter the unfailing joy of Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.
Readings (we sit)
First Reading (Leviticus 19.1-2,15-18)
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Psalm 1 is sung by the cantor
1 Blessed is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly,
nor stood in the way of sinners * and hath not sat in the seat of the
scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord * and in his law will he exercise
himself day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the water-side * that will bring
forth his fruit in due season.
4 His leaf also shall not wither * and look, whatsoever he doeth, it shall
prosper.
5 As for the ungodly, it is not so with them * but they are like the chaff,
which the wind scattereth away from the face of the earth.
6 Therefore the ungodly shall not be able to stand in the judgement *
neither the sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
7 But the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous * and the way of the
ungodly shall perish.
Second reading (1 Thessalonians 2.1-8)
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
(We stand as the Deacon says the Alleluia)
Alleluia, Alleluia. Were not our hearts burning within us, while he was
opening the scriptures to us? Alleluia.
Please face the Gospel reading (Matthew 22.34-end)
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew
Glory to you, O Lord
3This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
Sermon– Fr Crispin Pailing (incorporating the Annual Meeting Report)
The Creed (We stand)
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of
heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with
the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our
salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the
Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake
he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was
buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the
Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right
hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living
and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and
the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the
prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We
acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look
for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to
come. Amen.
The Intercessions (please kneel or sit)
Either of the following responses may be used:
Lord hear us Lord graciously hear us
Lord in your mercy hear our prayer
At the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers, for the sake of your
Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
4The Peace (We stand)
Before the Peace is introduced, we formally adopt the previously published reports
to the Annual Meeting.
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.
Offertory
Please remain seated until the end of the Offertory, at which point please stand as
the thurifer censes the congregation
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all who love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
Words: from St Patrick’s Breastplate, tr. Mrs C F Alexander (1818-95)
Music: J Mease, arr C V Stanford (1852-1924)
The Eucharistic Prayer
A prayer is said over the gifts on the altar, to which we respond Amen.
The Lord be with you
and also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
The seasonal part of the prayer follows and at the end the cantor sings:
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria
tua. Osanna in excelsis.
Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis.
5[Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your
glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the
Lord. Hosanna in the highest.]
Music: Dritte Messe, Aloys Edenhofer (1820-96)
We pray for the Holy Spirit to transform us and the gifts, and then the words of
Jesus at the Last Supper are recalled:
The following acclamation is then used:
Praise to you, Lord Jesus:
Dying you destroyed our death,
rising you restored our life:
Lord Jesus, come in glory.
The prayer continues with oblation and intercession, ending:
… we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise:
Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and
ever. Amen.
Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy
kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give
us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into
temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the
power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in
one bread.
The cantor sings:
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. (x2)
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.
[Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant us peace.]
6Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Blessed are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word, and I shall be healed.
If you normally receive Communion in your own church then you are welcome
to do so here, or you may prefer the priest to pray for God’s blessing on
you. Please indicate if you would rather receive a blessing.
In order to preserve social distancing, communion will not be distributed in one
central location but will instead be brought to everyone at their seats. Please
remain at your seat throughout this time.
Gluten-free hosts are available.
During Communion
Panis angelicus fit panis hominum Dat panis coelicus
figuris terminum O res mirabilis Manducat dominum
Pauper, pauper Servus et humilis
May the Bread of Angels become bread for mankind;
The Bread of Heaven puts all foreshadowings to an end;
Oh, thing miraculous! The body of the Lord will nourish
the poor, the poor, the servile, and the humble.
Words: from the hymn ‘Sacris solemniis’ - St Thomas Aquinas (1225-74)
Music: César Franck (1822-90)
Post-Communion Prayers (We stand at ‘Let us pray’)
After the post-communion prayer we say together
You have opened to us the Scriptures, O Christ, and you have
made yourself known in the breaking of the bread. Abide with us,
we pray, that, blessed by your royal presence, we may walk with
you all the days of our life, and at its end behold you in the glory of
the eternal Trinity, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
